Bought this during the Autumn Steam Sale for less than 20 euros, with the previous two games included in the bundle. If you are very used to playing 3D Sonic fan games, then you'll feel right at home! It has all the things that I liked about those, the way the momentum is preserved, how the controls remain consistent and the weight of the character is such that I always feel in control, even at high speeds. The fully manual camera is a godsend and I'm glad the developer was confident enough in the player abilities to not try and "take care of it for them" like in some other games. That often ends up in players making mistakes as the camera's point of view is moved without them expecting it, which then forces developers to over-automate levels. Also I'm a keyboard + mouse player, completely ignored the game telling me to use a game controller, the camera movement through the use of the mouse for me trumps any other advantages the gamepad might have for combat. I hate moving the camera with the right stick, it means having to always choose between operating the face button actions and the camera movement, but not being able to do both at the same time. I hope the keyboard and mouse controls will continue to exist for future games! Nice addition of the rails, very well designed: not too simplistic, but also don't have many of the problems that games in the past encountered while experimenting with the concept. It doesn't have balance mechanics but the "crouch" when going downhill to gain speed is nice. The combat system is nice, I don't have a lot of experience in these combat/action style games, but it was simple enough to learn while not being nearly as much of an afterthough as in Spark 2. On the other hand, I felt that those forced combat sections many times stopped the flow of the level. Maybe something that can't be avoided with these momentum-based games that try to include combat, but it would be cool to see an implementation that can merge speed platforming and combat, maybe even making speed platforming useful for combat and vice versa. About the falling damage mechanic... It's not that intrusive and it can add a layer of challenge to the gameplay, but it definitely feels like it was implemented exclusively to prevent players from cheesing the last two levels (the tutorial placement for it confirms it ), it could be removed from all other levels without changing much. If there was a need to stop a player from just falling indefinitely in those final levels, in hindsight, it could be contextualized as a "security system" that targets falling objects and shoots them down with an insta-death laser (just a simple idea that came up in my mind). Rather than the character having a sudden heart attack after falling for too long or too fast. With that said, I do like when I manage not to splat to the ground with a quick use of dash/doublejump as I continue to move quickly through the levels. The graphic style is simple but nicely implemented, definitely a massive improvement over Spark 2 (I'm not saying that game is ugly, but it definitely went with a very simple art style in both its materials and terrain shape), the environments feel much more like actual places, helped by the fact that the levels are huge, feel alive and are fun to explore. I digged the music, especially the more guitar heavy tracks, but I was bummed at the lack of vocal tracks in this game, considering what the previous game did. Was hoping to hear more vocal tracks after the Throwback boss fight. The weakest part I can find in this game might be the story. Given through big exposition dumps after certain levels and sometimes not even about stuff that happens in this game, as if the developer wanted to add context to the previous games instead. To be fair it could be skipped entirely and the game is fun regardless, but as someone who doesn't tend to skip the story in games, it was kind of a bummer. The final level was hype! The moment I selected it and saw what it was about, I was like "Oh really... Bring it on then!". And that final part had me questioning for a moment whether it was intentional of whether the level was so big that it was actually reaching the limits of the game engine. The final boss on the other hand was underwhelming from a spectacle point of view (has nothing on Freom in both previous games) and kinda appeared out of nowhere. Wished for more hype inducing final fight. Thankfully the secret DLC boss makes up for it in that respect, as well as in difficulty (Watch out for it's second phase, don't get bitch slapped to death like what happened with me!). So definitely try this game, there is a free demo available that has two main levels and a bunch of side missions. A huge improvement on almost everything form the already fun Spark the Electric Jester 2. It even has Spark playable! The actual character mentioned in the title! And yes, I 100%ed the game by getting all medals, including the Spark 2 DLC levels, on my main save.
