I don't usually leave reveiws but this time I feel the urge to...
I was looking for a good pirate-themed game, after being "burnt" by Sea of Thieves. SoT is not a bad game at all but it didn't meet my expectations in terms of content. Also, it forced me to play online and to be constantly worried about not be attacked by other players. Also: who thought it was a good idea to randomize the character appearance in that twisted way? Why???
So I started my search.
AC:BF? Already played. Also, didn't like the mc.
Tempest? Bad looking mc, too focused on naval action.
Atlas? Unfinished and also just a reskinned ARK with some ships in there.
Skull and Bones? A naval battle game with a pirate skin on it.
I was in "shock" thinking about no one made a PROPER pirate game, where your ship acts AS A SHIP and not AS A CAR, where you can do quests, find loot, fight enemies etc... all offline.
And then I saw Salt 2.
I took a look at the screens and some videos. It looked visually "cheap" so I initially avoided it. Days passed and I came back to the steam page, reading all the updates and such.
And I took the decision to buy it.
Oh dudes.
I should have done it before.
This game have EVERYTHING I was looking for:
- a ship that moves and respond properly to the steering wheel and is affected by wind directions, waves, etc.
- a navigation system that is even more "deep" than SoT, with no "smart map" at all. You have your map, a sestant, some coordinates and visual points to orient yourself
- a combat system simple but functional, with parries, melee and ranged weapons (bows, pistols, bombs, throwing knives, etc.)
- a levelling system with skill trees and exp related to every action you make (like gathering herbs, killing animals, etc.)
- a nice crafting system that allows you not only to craft potions, armors, and goodies but also furniture for your ship(s)
- NPC with multiple dialogues lines, quests, diaries to read
- a RANDOMLY GENERATED HUGE number of isles, with secrets and such (every one I visited felt unique in terms of content as I am writing this review)
- a variable weather and night/day cycle
- ffs they even added a whole "submarine-like" experience with a breath bar and the old-styled-mechanic to replenish the bar by standing near submarine bubbles lol I understand this means nothing to many but I was pleased by such nice touch
And more contents to come, like a customizable main character and multiplayer (facultative) as well.
Of course it could also have stuff like cutscenes, or battle between enemies ships, or even a more realistic graphic but hey... they say that perfection doesn't exist, uh?
Anyway this game is one of the best I played and for its price is a steal.
And surely it is the best pirate game out there atm*
*if you are into a single player experience that makes you "feel" a pirate at 360 degrees.
