When I decided to buy this game despite my horrible coordinations in platform games, I was guided by a thought "oh it seems cute", "I'm still in a Submerged funk" and "People says that the achievements are easy, it means that I do not need to sweat about it" (because yeah, while I don't play games for achievements, I love from once in a while to have one nearly handed into a silver plate). Mara is an unknown universe at this point, before a friend of mine informed me that it's the same girl as in Summer in Mara, which is not my type of game. You know, farming ressources, feeding animals, yada yada.
But here I am, playing with a controller and trying to understand everything. I'm not rushing the game though, first, it's exploring before getting that gold medal (beating a set of time). But well, first, I'm learning about the plot: Qualis, an island on Mara, has been robbed by the pirates: Awan, Caleb, Noohoo, Taka, Pilly, Tilly and Milly are quite deseperate to see their jobs threaten by these thieves. Mayo, a wannabe pirate, and her friends are explaining to Koa, a young explorer, and Napopo, a living seashell, that if they want to restore everything, they have to take part into a course to become a pirate. Koa and Napopo are ready to take the challenge. Beating each pirate should be easy right? Well... You don't expect Taima to be so kind, you don't expect Ereti to be so mad or... well, in reality, yeah, you should be expecting that because if you played Summer in Mara, these characters are themselves (keep in mind that I have no idea of the universe).
So, the goal is to grab a piece of a map from the pirates, to go to your next destination (weirdly enough, it's like you're discovering Mara again). The currency is the seashells you can collect along to unlock new backpacks and new shirts, you have the main island to collect them but also little islands to do it... or to find gears to upgrade your boat. Each level have secrets: fabrics to keep unlocking new clothes, trash to keep unlocking new backpacks and pearls because Edegan, the banker, is a jerk as he will act as the one between the pirates and yourself to restore what the islanders lost. Also, you have diving places, though this time, it's Napopo on a grappling hook for the sunken treasures. It should be easy to jump, roll and go fast? Well.... if you consider that it's a platformer... you will have to avoid spikes, tiles falling down once you set a foot on it and other traps that I have cursed around. In other words, yeah, it's pretty to get a golden medal once you have mastered the controls AND found one or two nice shortcuts and explored casually the level so that you can get the hidden secrets and plan your strategy. Oh and if you want to fully explore Mara, you have also to beat Mayo and Co in a race. Strangely enough, Mayo is always second behind you, Sandee (?), claiming to be the fastest, is the third and Boohoo (who really doesn't want to be there) is the last one. And like I've said, knowing one or two shortcuts is helpful.
The one downside? The last level where you really need to be as perfect as you can be because you have so few checkpoints (I've played in Normal but after a while, I've lowered the difficulty of some levels to Easy, and the last one was among them), mess one leg and you can ask for restarting the level. I'm accepting responsability because I made some ridiculous jumps at a bad moment but my already bad coordination isn't explaining all as it took me 3-4 hours to speedrun the level when I was cruising some levels that were as hard as this one.
Also, I don't know why and sometimes, I died without falling down, without touching any trap... just literally lost my three lives in one go... in an already hard level in the temples. Yay!
The levels are varied enough: your own island is relatively easy, compared to traps in the Marine Base or even in the temples. All the characters are nice enough with you (apart Ereti, who is always mad anyway - you really shouldn't have broken into her sanctuary) and are familiar faces from Summer in Mara.
Anyway, I loved this game so much that I've bought (and finished) Summer in Mara, as it's as chill as this platforming game. I love the cuteness of the graphics, I loved the soundtrack. True, the achievements are easy... but you already know that the one with all golden medals was hard as hell with the last level. If you're familiar with Mara, then, you'll catch references with the universe, if you're not, I strongly advise you to play Summer in Mara and Stories of Mara (though I have to still play this one).
