TL;DR:
I still remember playing the demo a couple of years ago and eagerly wishing for the game’s release. I just knew I had to play it!
And I wasn’t wrong. This game isn’t perfect—there are flaws, which I’ll get to—but if you enjoy the visual style and are willing to accept that you’ll need to play through it several times to fully grasp everything, then this game is for you.
The Story:
At its core, the story revolves around two protagonists who never meet in person during their daily (or nightly) routines. Frank and Drake both live in the same tiny apartment, but their biorhythms are out of sync, so they only communicate through sticky notes on their shared fridge. This method of communication is seamlessly integrated into the story, as both characters also share their thoughts and theories in personal diaries. You, as the player, get to know both characters, but it’s up to you whether they grow closer or remain distant.
I won’t go into details about the plot to avoid spoilers, but after two playthroughs, I’ve already encountered two different endings out of a possible five. There’s still more to discover. The game includes a progress chart that tracks your decisions, letting you see exactly what you’ve chosen in previous playthroughs. I really appreciated this feature and was curious enough to replay the game, though I decided to hold off on a third run for now—some sections repeat, and they can be quite tedious. Cough maze! cough. I must add though that toward the end, the story takes a turn I personally didn’t enjoy, but I was invested enough in the characters to still find it enjoyable.
The Music:
There’s not much to say about the music—it didn’t stand out. I honestly can’t remember any specific tracks that made a lasting impression.
The Visuals:
The visuals are a standout feature. I loved the rotoscoping technique—it brings the characters to life in a way that feels unique. Beyond that, the comic style is delightful, with creative ideas scattered throughout. Often, the visuals serve to reflect the inner world of the protagonists, which can be haunting, beautiful, or at times, confusing. Overall, I would say the game’s visual presentation is one of its greatest strengths.
The Puzzles:
Yes, there are puzzles. Most of them are fairly easy and integrate well into the flow of the story, but some can be downright frustrating. I found myself relying on trial and error to get through one particularly tough puzzle, and I honestly hope I never encounter something like that again.
Conclusion:
Frank and Drake is a charming little game about an unusual friendship, though it sometimes leans a bit too heavily into its quirks. Still, it’s never boring, never slows down, and feels intuitive throughout. I love games that I can pick up, play for a while, and then drop with the satisfying feeling of having had a good time. The story may become a bit over-the-top near the end, but overall, it’s a well-rounded and satisfying experience.
