Banner of the Maid is a captivating tactical RPG that masterfully combines historical fiction with turn-based strategy, set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. Developed by Azure Flame Studio, the game stands out by weaving a narrative deeply rooted in a turbulent era of political upheaval, while delivering solid, engaging gameplay that challenges players to think critically about battlefield positioning, resource management, and character progression. For those interested in history, tactical combat, and immersive storytelling, Banner of the Maid offers a rich experience that balances historical depth with fantasy elements. Visually, Banner of the Maid embraces a charming anime-inspired art style that breathes life into its characters and environments. The detailed character portraits are expressive and full of personality, while the battlefield maps are carefully crafted with a balance of clarity and artistic flourish. The animation during combat sequences, though not overly flashy, is smooth and visually satisfying, effectively conveying the weight of each attack and movement. The game’s aesthetic succeeds in drawing players into the emotional and political complexities of its setting, making the French Revolution feel immediate and personal rather than distant and abstract. Gameplay revolves around turn-based tactical combat on grid-based maps, with a strong emphasis on positioning, terrain, and unit synergy. Players command a variety of unique characters, each with their own strengths, skills, and narrative arcs, encouraging strategic diversity. Battles require careful planning: balancing offense and defense, exploiting enemy weaknesses, and managing limited resources like action points and stamina. Unlike many tactical RPGs, Banner of the Maid incorporates mechanics such as morale and formations that impact combat effectiveness, adding depth and nuance. These features push players to adapt constantly, making each skirmish feel like a complex puzzle rather than a simple clash of numbers. One of the game’s standout qualities is its storytelling. While firmly rooted in history, the narrative introduces fictional elements and characters that interact with real historical figures, creating a compelling alternate history. The writing is thoughtful, exploring themes of loyalty, revolution, and the human cost of war. Character development is handled with care, as personal stories and relationships unfold alongside the broader conflict, adding emotional stakes to the tactical decisions players must make. The dialogue is well-crafted and often touches on philosophical questions, enriching the overall experience without overwhelming the gameplay. Outside of combat, Banner of the Maid offers strategic management elements where players can train their units, upgrade equipment, and manage resources to prepare for upcoming battles. This layer adds an RPG depth that rewards investment in character growth and tactical preparation. The balance between these management tasks and the core combat is well-paced, ensuring that neither aspect feels neglected or overly tedious. The soundtrack complements the game’s tone perfectly, featuring orchestral and period-inspired compositions that evoke the atmosphere of revolutionary France. Music swells during key moments to heighten drama, while softer tracks underscore quieter, character-driven scenes. Sound effects during battle, such as sword clashes and musket fire, are impactful without being repetitive, adding to the immersion. While Banner of the Maid excels in many areas, it is not without minor flaws. Some players may find the pacing uneven, with occasional slow segments during story exposition or preparation phases. The difficulty curve can also be steep at times, especially for newcomers to tactical RPGs, as battles demand precise planning and quick adaptation. The UI, while generally functional, occasionally feels cluttered, particularly when managing large squads or navigating menus. However, these issues are relatively minor and do not significantly detract from the overall experience. In conclusion, Banner of the Maid is a richly detailed and thoughtfully designed tactical RPG that offers both strategic depth and emotional storytelling set against a vivid historical backdrop. Its combination of engaging combat mechanics, compelling narrative, and striking art direction make it a memorable experience for fans of the genre and history alike. Though it challenges players with a demanding difficulty and occasional pacing quirks, the game’s strengths far outweigh its flaws. For those looking to immerse themselves in a revolutionary tale told through the lens of tactical warfare, Banner of the Maid is a rewarding and worthwhile adventure. Rating: 8/10

I'm going to approach this review as a long-time Fire Emblem fan-- specifically a fan who may-or-may-not play FE on the computer. I enjoyed this game overall! It's some classic turn-based strategy action where the armies take their actions in phases, which leaves lots of room for planning. I will say, this game is harder than most of the FE games I've played, aside from some of the more difficult modes of modern games. It requires you to pay attention to what units you deploy where, since the effectiveness between units can really be life or death. Unit's don't really "snowball" in this game either, so you can't really rely on one ultra-powerful character in combat. I really do recommend playing on "story" mode if you want to complete the game in any sort of a timely manner. Not only does EXP gain grind to a halt at about level 10 otherwise, there is also very little money gain, so things like leveling up and getting new skills become very difficult, as both of those are expensive (though accurate to the history of the French revolution?). Story mode also includes a fun mechanic where you can pick from 2 random buffs based on NPCs in the game to assist you in battle, which can really help you out on the harder maps, as you have to make tactical decisions as to which one will suit the map ahead the best. The maps are all quite different, and I appreciate that each one has a completely different win AND lose condition. Some require you to survive with all your units, and some require you finish in a specific amount of turns. Some are MUCH harder than others. I also enjoyed that you can remap the controls to be purely-keyboard, instead of keyboard/mouse. Overall, not as tight an experience as any FE game, but still worth playing if you like the genre and want a challenge!
