I have purchased every CIV game from 3 to 7. Did the wait for one year after CIV 7 came out to let the company beta test the game to function. Have played about 90 hours on this game with no expectation since that is still in the learning curve. After those 90 hours I can't recommend the game. Fact of the matter I don't feel much interest in opening the game to continue figuring out the new system. The game lags, designers chose graphics over game function. Not a fan of the tech progression or the combat view. The game itself is dark and I spend a lot of time squinting at the screen to see what is happening. The whole game feels like a random tech progression instead of something with a inherent logic. Fraxis already got my money so fair play to them but not interested in getting more addons and ususally I cannot resist the extras. To anyone looking to but this one, take care and look at some reviews. I just did not love this one, back to CIV 6 and CIV 5.

(Posting this review here because I posted a review of Civ 6 years ago and edited reviews remain buried under years of reviers)
I'm writing a negative review 10 years after the game was released, and with over 4k hours into the game. Why? It's because of Civ 7. It doesn't make sense to write a bad review for Civ 6 because of Civ 7, it's true. But Civ 7 made me play Civ 6 more and also reflect on the deep flaws of Civ 6. And for anyone who was paying attention, it should have been obvious that Civ 7 was going to be awful. Firaxis managed to hoodwink all of us by giving us Civ 6 which at first glance seems a pretty good game. Then you play it over and over and realise how frustrating so many of its features are - great concepts and ideas that are half-baked at best.
Barbarian clans mode: great concept, allowing barbarian camps to turn into city states. Allows for the map to be less empty sometimes, and potentially good gold source. But horrible implemementation. Camps spawn immediately after another is dispersed. Camps spawn unique units of civs that are not in the game (and they spawn them continuously), so sometimes you find yourself fighting unique ancient and classical barbarian units that become more than just an annoyance. City states do nothing; they advance to clear a barbarian camp just to... stand next to it and do nothing.
Natural disasters: interesting idea which adds variety to gameplay and some realism. But it takes too long to repair damage from disasters, especially in the later ages where you have many built up districts, while in the earlier ages production is lower. And of course, no repair all button, which was a huge complaint in Civ 7 at launch and Firaxis took MONTHS to implement. Just like in Civ 7 with volcanoes erupting every turn and rivers flooding every turn, Civ 6 had ridiculous natural disasters too. Haboob dust storms with ONE tile of desert surrounded by grassland? Check. I play all my one-more-turn games until a major disaster hits and then it's new game.
Golden/Dark ages: a great concept, but really, everyone tries to avoid a dark age. I remember when this and loyalty pressure were first introduced and Firaxis tried to sell dark ages as not a bad thing because oh but dark age policy cards (also cue oh but yIeLDs fRoM naTUrAl dISaSteRs). Sure, there might be some strategies where this would work out, but the loyalty hit isn't worth it, especially if playing with dramatic ages turned on (where you will lose a number of cities if you enter a dark age).
Wonders: why hasn't Firaxis fixed the frustration of losing a wonder? Sure, everyone hates on Humankind and for Civ 7 copying its civ switching mechanic, but at least Humankind did wonders right. Losing a wonder in Civ 6 remains frustrating, and also in Civ 7.
I could go on and on about these little frustrating things that are just enough to make a run unenjoyable, but there's no point. Firaxis has clearly stopped updating Civ 6. Even Civ 6's main menu advertises for Civ 7. For instance, leaders with personas was a very interesting touch that had a lot of potential - at launch I thought there was going to be such a vast library of leaders with multiple leaders for each civilization. They did that for some civilizations, but this is the exception rather than the norm. For most civilizations and their leaders then, Civ 6 isn't different from any of its predecessors. But now there's no chance of seeing anyone but Peter the Great leading Russia, Wilhemina leading the Netherlands, Gitarja leading Indonesia (and these are just some of the civilizations which had multiple great or interesting leaders).
The sad reality is that most of us put up with all of these shortcomings and frustrations because Civ 6 just seems like a good game (which on surface, it is, otherwise I wouldn't have had so many hours on it), but it just gave Firaxis either the false confidence or a warped sense of reality that they could churn out interesting ideas and concepts in Civ 7 that were completely half-baked, and still get away with it. This started in Civ 6. And we just didn't pay attention.

I actually do recommend this but I only recommend buying it when it and all the other dlc is on sale, that’s how I got it. 14 dollars for literally every single dlc what a steal

I’m here giving Gathering Storm a positive review mainly because Civilization VI doesn’t have a DLC for the original soundtrack, and as a music lover that matters a lot. So I'm writing here for this expansion pack.
Thanks to this DLC, the game contains my favorite track: Hej Dunáról fúj a szél; Cinege, Cinege.
It truly felt like a wind blowing from the Danube. On a bright afternoon, when I opened the game casually, knowing almost nothing about it and standing on the threshold of its world, it slipped into my permafrost, struck my heart, and love rise with the sound of the flute. In that wind, I dwell poetically upon the earth, and so I kept playing this game all the way to today.
In fact I love the arrangements for all civilizations, and I genuinely wish there were an official OST and artbook so I would gladly pay for it.
And then yes, you’re right! This is the Raven King.
Levy: +5 Combat Strength, +2 Movement
Diplomatic Quarter: +5 Combat Strength
Great General: +5 Strength, +1 Movement
Oligarchy: +4 Strength
Promotion: +7 Strength, +1 Movement
Ancient Era Swordsman with 61 Strength, 6 Movement, together got a Hero Himiko at start, then Medieval Black Army plus Industrial-era Hussars ——
They’ve all come over to visit your house!
“Sorry, there’s not enough room for all of us here.”
“Is that so? Then I’ll just pile up my levied army, Black Army, and Hussars so we can stack the bonuses!”
