One of the games of all time.
TLDR: Bad gameplay. Good story when it decides to have a story and fetch quest galore. Get it on a good sale. Now let me preface this by saying I love a good horror game. I love a good bad horror game. This game fails to be either. I'd consider myself to be a fan of this series. I loved the first game and thought a sequel would be the perfect opportunity to expand on the world. I did watch this back when it came out and remembered a couple things, new combat, story, the fact that I didn't like it, etc. so I did have some expectations going in. We're gonna start with the bad since I'd prefer to end on a good note. Ofc, hot takes incoming: > Combat. So this game traded in it's mobile phone gameplay for melee combat. Though both do still appear. * The mobile phone gameplay: As someone who really quite liked it in the first game but could see its flaws, I'm happy to report that it's clunkier than before. There's a delay between shots that really messes with you when you undoubtedly miss a shot on a ghost. Fine when it works. But the ghosts have weirdly finicky hit boxes that often lead to missed shots despite the fact that you very clearly got them. It is frustrating but I can deal for the most part. However.... * The melee combat is just awful. It's actually so so bad. And it's the main way you're going to be playing. The animations are slow and clunky. The stun-locking is absurd and you really feel the lack of a dodge option since you kinda hafta just awkwardly shimmy out of enemies way, which is awful during some of the boss fights. Namely, the last two. The bosses are all damage sponges with weird hitboxes, obnoxious patterns and the ability to stun you. This gameplay style needed a lot more refinement before being relied upon so heavily for the bulk of the gameplay. The stun from your phone works fine for the most part though. > Exploration: * The exploration is pretty simple. Run around and look for stuff. Usually right before you need to use it. Long winding corridors can be kind of frequent but I'd call the exploration the most inoffensive part of the gameplay loop. However, the world is empty. There's no need to go back to an area after being told to save for the few side quests. I loved how the first game had collectibles, optional ghost encounters and fun easter eggs you could bump into. This game in comparison felt like they only finished the main story but forgot to actually populate their world with anything. > The story (sorta): * So most of the story will be discussed in the "good" section but I do have some notes. The story isn't bad exactly, but there are some points in the game at which it feels like the stories come to a halt for a creepy thing they want to show you. Two big parts of the game for me being the hospital and when you first encounter
goth linda
. The story comes to a complete halt to have some lengthy horror sections that are fine in isolation but really struggle to justify their place in the story. It's possible I just missed something though. Well, now onto the good: > The problem with all that I've just said is that there's a lot to love in this game and whether I was laughing or laughing, the game was entertaining through and through. * So as I just implied, the game is really good at being accidentally funny. Whether it's the voice acting or scuffed animations or bad AI, the game really made me laugh which is always a plus. It did also have its moments of being tense and did give me a good fright on occasion which I'd hope to be during a horror game. > The game has a strong, if not slightly clunky start. Linda is quite a sympathetic protagonist and it's sad to see her be put through a lot of the events that unfold. Especially at the start of the game. > Loads of the NPC dialogue is pretty cool and helps the barren wasteland of a world feel just a little bit less empty. Same goes for the flavour text and the occasional input from Linda herself. > Enemy character design is still amazing. The game was strongest when facing unique enemy designs that really gave them their own identity from the stock-standard spirit. > Story (when it kicks in) is pretty compelling. Learning more about Linda, her past and how she fits into the overarching narrative surrounding the spirits is interesting to see unfold. And Well Yeah That's it. Wholly mediocre game with its ups and downs. Get it on a good sale.

i loved the atmosphere of the game and they did an excellent job giving the world the feelings of indonesia , but thats the only good thing about the game. Its janky as F*CK, every mechanic of the game is so poorly implemented to the point its not even fun, and one more thing i didnt like is they changed the design of Linda in a way you cant recognise her if you played the 1st game. and every other female character is just anime like to look hot. many of the sparks the 1st game had is gone now.

Pretty standard high school simulator. I see no difference from my own education. Except I didn't have a cat growing up and we didn't have smartphones. It even has the bugs all over the school and the broken controls I remember clearly. // Some fusion of Silent Hill and Fatal Frame with it's own cultural perspective and sense of humor of all things. There are some puzzles where the hints are so slight, esoteric, and absurd that it's comical. One of the puzzles is so clever I think people under 30 might actually not be able to solve it as the hint is casually disguised as an old person's insult to the "youth of the days". There are definitely counterintuitive situations where you're going to have to look things up and even might find you tried that thing, but if you can get through these games (1&2), this story is quite good and very unique. The most unsettling parts of the story is when everything is normal or people are acting like everything is okay.

It's better than the first game, but its just one boring set piece after another and nothing else. Get this game on a sale if you're really desperate for a PS2 style horror game, though it has none of the charm other than the graphics. I had hopped to like this game, but it's little more than another Fatal Frame ripoff.

i enjoy the game but combat is soooo bad! if you get knocked by a fast enemy, game over. it will keep knocking you down over and over again and you have no chance at getting back up to hit them again. crazy that this game is only from 2020... also the taking pictures for a boss 20+ times before they die gets kind of old
