Easily the best RTS I've ever played, it's a little buggy at times but aside from that very fun. It's got a decent campaign, and the gameplay is pretty good. If you're a fan of games like starcraft or dawn of war, this is a great step-up.

Something like 20 years since release. Still one of the best strategy games. Took what was good from total annihilation and made it a lot better. Haven't seen anything like this since.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is widely regarded as one of the most ambitious and technically impressive real-time strategy (RTS) games ever created, serving as an expansion to the groundbreaking Supreme Commander. Developed by Gas Powered Games, this standalone expansion elevates the series’ trademark focus on massive scale warfare, intricate unit management, and deep strategic planning, delivering an RTS experience that is both epic in scope and rewarding in complexity. From colossal battles involving hundreds of units to detailed resource logistics and base-building, Forged Alliance invites players to command sprawling armies with precision and vision, redefining what is possible within the genre.
One of the defining features of Forged Alliance is its staggering scale. Players oversee battles that can stretch across expansive maps with multiple fronts, where micromanagement and macromanagement coexist in a delicate balance. The game’s interface and camera system are designed to handle this complexity, allowing players to zoom seamlessly from a high-level strategic overview down to individual units engaged in combat. This fluid control is essential, as players juggle tasks such as resource harvesting, production queues, defense planning, and tactical engagements, often across diverse terrain and weather conditions that impact gameplay.
The expansion introduces a new faction, the Seraphim, an alien race with unique units and abilities, adding fresh strategic options and challenges. Each faction in Forged Alliance—the United Earth Federation (UEF), the Cybran Nation, the Aeon Illuminate, and now the Seraphim—boasts distinct playstyles, units, and tech trees, ensuring a dynamic metagame and encouraging players to adapt their tactics. The balance between these factions is finely tuned, with a strong emphasis on counterplay and synergy, making multiplayer matches intense and highly competitive. The single-player campaign is also enhanced, offering a compelling continuation of the series’ storyline with engaging missions that gradually introduce players to new mechanics and units.
The depth of strategic options available in Forged Alliance is immense. Players must manage multiple resource types, construct and upgrade bases, research advanced technologies, and deploy specialized units ranging from light scouts to massive experimental war machines that can turn the tide of battle. The inclusion of experimental units—gigantic, game-changing vehicles and structures—adds a layer of epic spectacle and strategic consideration, as their deployment requires significant investment and timing. Mastering the balance between rushing to build experimental units and maintaining a robust economy and defense is a core part of the game’s challenge and appeal.
Visually, Forged Alliance remains impressive even years after its release. The game features detailed unit models, vibrant particle effects, and expansive environments that bring its futuristic warfare to life. While it may not match the graphical fidelity of modern RTS titles, its clarity and scale-focused design ensure that players can easily track the flow of battle across sprawling maps. The soundtrack and sound design further enhance immersion, with dynamic music and impactful sound effects that heighten the tension and excitement of combat.
Despite its many strengths, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance does have a steep learning curve that can be daunting for newcomers. The sheer amount of information to manage and the complexity of the interface require patience and practice to master. Additionally, the game’s focus on large-scale battles means that matches can be lengthy, demanding sustained attention and strategic foresight. However, for players willing to invest the time, the payoff is a deeply satisfying RTS experience that rewards thoughtful planning and quick decision-making.
In conclusion, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance stands as a monumental achievement in real-time strategy gaming. Its unparalleled scale, strategic depth, and robust multiplayer community make it a timeless classic that continues to influence the genre. Whether commanding vast armies in epic online battles or progressing through its challenging single-player campaign, players will find a rich and rewarding experience that challenges their tactical acumen and strategic creativity. For fans of RTS games seeking an expansive, detailed, and endlessly engaging title, Forged Alliance remains a definitive must-play.

An incredibly solid, older RTS-style game. I find the battles to be extremely epic to watch. There is plenty of maps (hundreds) and an insane amount of units to use, and strategies to employ. I am quite new to the series, but I will be exploring it more to come.

It's great WHEN IT WORKS ON LINUX :(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((
(I got it to run for a good 2 hours and then my PC display shut off and it's bricked)
EDIT: I had to install Vulkan drivers (there was an Arch update that required you to uninstall nouveau cause of kernel drivers--I reinstalled the vulkan drivers), and I put the game on fullscreen and disabled proton Esync and Fsync. The game still does not like being suspended (I'm running Wayland with Sway / Nvidia so there could be some independent suspend issues--I don't really mind). My launch options look like:
PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% /fullscreen 1920 1080
And I got these from ProtonDB.
