Chef caught my eye again as I was browsing for a game to sleepily enjoy this evening, and I figured I'd give a quick review while I remember! I binged this quite some time ago but never really returned to it too much. While I do recommend the game for the recipe editor alone, I'm not without a fair few criticisms of it. Yay:

The recipe creator is intuitive, easy to follow, and really fun and satisfying. It was nice to see a restaurant tycoon where I could properly set the menu! Nice little creative avenue.
Music is pretty cute! As is the design of the little chefs and waiters and such.
The range of ingredients is really cool to explore.
Good range of ideals to manage for certain demographics, which gives replay attraction.
The employee task prioritisation tickled the organisation loving part of my brain.
Loads of funny little prompts / references in game.
Nay:

When I first started playing I found getting started brutal and had to look up tips just to survive more than a few days. It was a bit off putting.
The UI can feel busy and a bit clunky to navigate, especially to new players.
I have to say I do think the game is a bit...well...ugly. Sorry! I know it's not a driving point for the game but my logic is this - if you're allowing us the freedom to be creative with recipes, please let us be a bit more creative with designing our restaurants! It makes the game feel lopsided.
I do think the price tag is too high to be honest... the overall experience is too shallow to warrant it.
I think there could've been more work put into the events to make them a challenge rather than just visual noise.
Almost all of the real appeal sits on the recipe editor. Once your restaurant gets flowing the novelty starts to die off and I find it hard to pick up this game for extended periods.
All in all… I do think the game play is one sided and lots, if not all, of the appeal rides on the recipe editor, but it is a really fun game for that alone! I just can't help but feel like this could've been really special if there'd have been extra attention into providing more challenges later into the game, and more customisation to match the level of creativity available in the recipe editor. It feels like there was a lot of love put into that one aspect and the rest got glossed over or rushed. Still, I do recommend giving it a go if you feel like you'd have fun hyper focusing on the menu! I would just perhaps wait for it to go on sale to get a better deal.

Management games are not my kind of games. But i do like to cook. Being able to set your own menu and make your own recipes was really nice. Profit margins are pretty thin when you start. But as you learn how to use fewer high quality ingredients. And start to appeal to higher class patrons. You can start raking it in. It was a lot of fun. I definitely enjoyed it.

Good, gets boring after awhile of doing the same thing but has a fair amount of fun play time.
