Honestly a fantastic bullet hell. Beautiful detailed pixel art, catchy chiptune soundtrack, tight mechanics, fun bullet patterns, and a charming little story <3 <3

Right game for the right price. This is a nice little game to enjoy for what it is; it is not raising the bar for shmups but I don't think that it this was the intention. It uses a nice limited color palate and makes for a fun time. The levels are easy and the first few bosses are easy as well but the bullet patterns are nice. I am not normally overly concerned with scores but this one uses a multiplier for all enemies on screen you defeat and resets if one is missed. I am not sure if you get bonuses for not using bombs as the level loads after the last level was completed. Nice little storyline; not insanley deep but as this genre is not know for it's stories this was good. I would recommend this game.

This game has some issues with its controls. At first, the keyboard controls are only made for QWERTY-keyboards. Playing this on a QWERTZ-keyboard is nearly impossible. Secondly, you have to hold down the fire button all the time. Thirdly, you control the ship via the arrow keys. This feels very awkward, when 99% of the games you play use WASD (, which you control with your left hand). All of this wouldn't be that bad, if you could rebind the keys. But you simply can't.
So I plugged in my controller and it worked for the game itself - But you still had to hold down the fire button. And not all of the controls seemed to work in the menu.
I played a bit and what I could see were some red enemies shooting red bullets and my blue ship shooting blue bullets. But it couldn't keep my attention. This game could be worth playing, if it hadn't the controlling issues. But for now, I'm going to refund it.

HellStar Squadron is a very fun game to pass the time or just when you feel like shooting some fictional spaceships from hell. I love the soundtrack and visuals and reminds me a small bit of Undertale. Although I do feel as though the hitbox is a bit larger than it should be but it doesn't effect gameplay too much. It's pretty easy to get the hang of, too. So, I definitely recommend this amazing game.

Fun little shmup. Nothing groundbreaking but it's a fun afternoon waster. And for a $1.99, who's gonna argue?

Simply excellent, the timing is tuff, but the challenge to beat the game is possible, and the musics are quite nice... a cool shoot em up to play someting fresh and a bit brainless. Recommended.

Too easy, slow and boring. Lots of dead air and unskippable dialogue.
You'll 1cc it in 40 minutes and you're done. No extra difficulties to unlock. Very basic scoring mechanic of chaining enemies, I have absolutely no urge to play this again.
Hitbox on your ship is pretty huge, try to go around clumps of bullets rather than dodging between them.
It looks nice and it's cheap but when you can buy something as good as eXceed 3rd for a fiver on steam, there's just no reason to get this.
Good game, would recommend!
HellStar Squadron is a fun little bullet hell shooter.
In terms of difficulty, it provides a good challenge without being overly unforgiving. The soundtrack and visuals are great! (Built-in CRT shaders are always a plus!) The game has a decent amount of content for the price. I'm currently up to stage six of eight with one of the three characters, after about two hours. Beyond this, each wave of enemies is somewhat randomised, keeping the game fresh with each playthrough (or retry in my case...). If I had to give any recommendations for the future, perhaps some mutator modes? Stuff like one life or limited bullets, just to add a bit more replayability.
Overall, it's a good game!

It's a decent space shooter, on the easy side, but it was still too hard for me one year ago, but after a year of shooters I managed to get to stage 4 boss, that keeps wiping me to the floor. You have different ships, and after you clear a stage you can start from that stage again.
The only two negatives for me are really:
I)the enemy bullets are always orange, and when you are playing on a stage with an orange background..you can imagine, you need to sharpen your eyes.
II)there is some needless dialogue at the start of every stage and boss, sure it's just a couple of lines..but if you keep dying and repeating again, and again it becomes really dull to repeat the dialogue.

This is a decent enough cheap shoot 'em up. There are a few things that are a little rough around the edges. Avid bullet hell players and shmup players may find this a bit too easy. The gameplay is very simple and there is the constant reminder of controls on the side. There are three different ships to choose from giving a little bit of replay value. There are seven stages and some bonus stages. The game is controller supported. The soundtrack that is there is pretty awesome.
There are a few issues with the game; but not anything that makes the game unplayable. There are a few things that fans of the genre can expect to see in games like this. The hit detection is a bit too large so strafing in between bullets is usually not your best bet for survival. At times because of the possible swarm of bullets that you have no choice but to try to squeeze in between, your death may result in another quick death due to limited invincibility frames. There is some dead time in the air which will easily break combo strings. The dialogue that is at the start and boss entry should be if possible switched to a skippable or instant text speed for replay purposes. The only other issue I had was the bomb didn't clear bullets on screen which was kind of strange to me. This isn't a major con though.
Pros
+Fun gameplay
+Nice amount of levels
+Cheap
+Great music
+Multiple ship types for limited replayability
Mix?
~Bombs don't clear bullets
~Quick invincibility frames can sometimes result in second death
Cons
-Hit box feels bigger than it should
-Dialogue in cut scenes not skippable or able to speed up
-Dead time results in combo loss
All in all this is a decent shooter. It is a little rough around the edges, but for the asking price you are getting an acceptable amount of content. If you enjoy shoot em' ups; go ahead and pick it up.
