What an experience, I had not played the original or seen the anime before playing this so can't comment on the best way to experience this for the first time. However after looking at videos of the original vn I do actually think I would still have preferred this as a good combo of the two in one.
I must say the first 10 hours or so can be a challenge to get passed, and to be honest if I didn't know from other reviews to expect this and that the pay off would be worth it I may not have stuck it out.
BUT - I am so glad I did. Easy 9/10.

If it's your first experience with the game, play the original. It's more inmersive and has great CGs. ELITE is better for a second run. Gives a different experience with some content changed and anime images. It's worth buying because it comes with Linear Bounded Phenogram.
Never watch the anime. The games are much better.

While it's true that this is somewhat inferior to the original Visual Novel, as someone who hasn't watched the anime, this was a pretty great way to "replay" the funny, brilliant, beautiful and sorrowful story that is Steins;Gate.
