The gameplay itself is really good. There's definitely been a lot of polish and the additions to the game are fine. Mortars feel great to use, the APC and the march orders do make up for the shortcomings of some units and allow for interesting strategies. The combat engineers being able to revive people is very handy too.
That being said, the story and the dialogue on the EN side of things suffers from the disease that is localization. The first game's translation did take some liberties, but it was nowhere near as egregious as VC4's, even putting Anthony Burch's attempts awful attempts at comedy to shame. This excessive quantity of flanderization, reddit lingo, quips based on what a 15-year old would find funny and more result in a very tone-deaf experience, which absolutely betrays how the characters were supposed to talk and act. Even with a somewhat tenuous grasp of Japanese on my part, the difference between the original and this botched dialogue is night and day.
Which sucks, since the story of these games has always been pretty good. Just look at VC1, which had a stellar one, in spite of the lackluster translation.
Genuinely hoping that whoever did localization on this gets fired, blacklisted or both. Chances are, whichever cockroach did this is probably failing upwards somewhere else, but still.
In a just world, these bottom feeders would've been shot and i'd say good riddance.
Overall, if you just care about the gameplay, get it on discount(the higher the better), set the voices to JP and have fun.

game's great. Nothing more to say.
Came back after I finished the game. It gets WAY better after ch. 11.
It's well written and Raz's character's just perfect. Also loved the dynamics between the main 4 protags, ending's kinda underwelming, but it's still a 8/10 game.
A Cold War with a Warm Heart (And a Dash of Frustration) 7/10
Valkyria Chronicles 4 looks amazing with its cool painted style, and the story really pulls you in. I ended up caring a lot about the characters in Squad E, and the battles were often smart and fun. It felt great leading my team through those snowy fights.
The thing is, it just goes on a bit too long. By the end, a lot of the fights turned into a mad dash. Instead of thinking things through, it felt like the game wanted me to just rush the objective if I wanted a good score. Take Mission 14, for example – that surprise multi-stage battle where capturing a camp at the wrong time could instantly lose you the fight. It was just annoying and didn't feel fair.
The game does get genuinely tough after you finish the main story, but by then, I was pretty much done with it. Still, if you like tactics games, this one's got a strong story, tons of stuff to do on the side, and plenty of upgrades. It's a solid game for fans of the genre... just be ready for it to overstay its welcome a little.

a nice game but not as strong as valkyria chronicles 1. yes there have been improvements all arround and you get to do some fancy stuff but also worsend it in some regard. the animations are way slower, turning characters takes longer, atleast moving the tanks is faster in this game.
has good story and a unique artstyle, grab it when its discounted and enjoy the sterotypical (not that its bad) story with some unique suprises that may made you wonder. fuck chapter 15, why was it so tough

Superb all around. Fantastic graphics and music. Excellent setting (fantasy WW2). Unique and engaging gameplay. Unit modifiers tied to each character's personality that change along with the story. Significantly modifiable loadouts. Individual character stories. We need more like this.

This is the best Valkyria Chronicles that ever released. I just hope SEGA doesn't ignore this series. Maybe they can release another game from Imperial POV.

Pretty nice game. It's held back by its ranking system, though.
If you want to get higher ranks, you need to finish missions in the fewest turns possible. That means that you have to rush objectives while ignoring most enemies. Not particularly fun :C
