Wait.
For the same amount of cash I would spend going to watch a movie I found myself occupied for nearly 7 hours. So, I can safely say its worth the money... but at the end I wish I would have given it another 6-12 months before I played.
Its not that the game is buggy, in fact I dont think I discovered a single bug during those 7 hours. Its not that there isnt enough content, there is plenty. So what is the problem?
Combat is wonky. Your character doesnt move with the camera so when you swing, even though your facing the target with your camera, the character isnt, so there is a second lost as your character swings widly. It lacks a sense of control. There is also notable lag in combat. Your supposed to be able to dodge, but because of the lag, even on a 50ms server, I cant ever seem to dodge (using spacebar). Shield works, and animations are pretty well done. I think the actual swing weapon animation blends well from 1 swing through the 3rd or more swings, and stops well anywhere in the middle.... but combat is difficult.
Wolves are everywhere. At night time, its super dark (something i actually like, but know people will complain about), and your bound to run into a wolf somewhere, and at the start it will mean you die. Pro tip: sprint, pause 2 seconds for recharge, sprint. The wolves will hit a leash and run back to where they started chasing you. IMHO this is bad game design... from old Everquest era. Wolves should chase you until you hurt them enough or they kill you.
Not only are wolves everywhere, every animal is everywhere. I went around the entire map and the same animals were everywhere.... because of this exporation wasnt as rewarding as it could have been.
Same plants are basically everywhere. No variations on trees.. same flowers...
This is all stuff that I suspect will be addressed throughout development, so this is why i say WAIT.
Building - Building is pretty good, though even with a bag I can only carry about 60 lumber/logs (logging yeilds lumber.. no refining process... hope that changes), and a wall takes 18 lumber, and a floor 20 something. Roof tiles dont seem to work and a little research showed me that this is a known thing thats being worked on. I did see some very VERY large player made structures and I can only imagine the man hours that went into making those considering the time i spent making a 3x3 wood house.
Skill tree is interesting though I wish you gained skill points in things you used.. like Dark and Light... the more you build the more build points you get, the more fighting you do the more fighitng points you get. etc.
Questing... this is something this game does better than Dark and Light by leaps and bounds. Each quest was unique.. no gather x or kill y quests. Well written to the point I felt like actually reading the quests. The best part.. there are no compas pointers to where you need to go, and only a general area marker on map to indicate where you should go. Finding quest givers is kind of hard... the names only highlight when your 2 feet away and only then will you have any idea if there is a quest or not.. while this adds to imersion it also means you have to spend a ton of time walking right up to every NPC you see to see if its a quest giver or not.
Traders are not marked and not recognizable. Only until you get 2 feet away and see the Trader name do you have any idea its a trader.
Horses cost 48g. By the end of my 7 hours I had 3.
Farming was a little tricky.. Pro Tip: get two bags of water and fill farm before you plant seeds. Pro Tip 2: stay in area until they grow.. cause they will die if your away to long and dont harvest.
There are sheep but no way to tame or harvest the wool.
This game needs animal husbandry and/or taming.
This game needs players to play with... without players soloing the harder animals and monsters (werewolves i never saw, nor dragons but there are both).
Conclusion: wait a few months, probably 6 or more.
Pros:
+ Stays challenging at all stages of your character's progress
+ Always something new to create, destroy, and explore
+ Great developers (listen to alpha testers, react to reported bugs, and inform us on updates)
Cons:
- It's in Alpha stages (and all that comes with it)
Evaluation:
This game is clearly not for anyone who wants a polished game, and I would only recommend buying right now if you are someone who is prepared to test, test, and test some more. I listed only one con because everything this game lacks (content, unique game features, polished gameplay, etc...) is said to be coming soon. Lastly, supporting Encurio, which includes buying the game, playing it, reporting on the bugs/glitches/issues of the current patch, and giving them suggestions, goes a long way towards making Valnir Rok a great game.

So far, the game is pretty damn fun to me, and since play time snobs will make my review invalid, I'll say, yes, I hadn't played this game for over 100 hours. I had quite a bit of fun playing this for the past 6 or so hours and I'll probably play it some more after Thanksgiving tomorrow. lol
My only complaints is that this game lacks terraforming, so if you want to build a big house, or even a normal sized one, you HAVE to make sure the land is flat or you're going to have a bad time. lol Also, building a house, itself, is a bitch to do compared to games like 7 Days to Die or whatever. (I know, bad comparison.) There are also some things missing like ladders, and wider window frames, simple stuff.
As for combat, it's bad. It feels clumsy and you feel like you have little to no control over what your character does in the fight. You also may get your ass kicked quite often before you even get a chance to find/make some good gear, especially when you're not used to the combat. People honestly over-react to the combat, I get that a game like this needs decent combat, but seriously, calm down, it'll get better eventually.
Other than that, I definitely recommend this game, just hope the devs add terraforming so building will be a bit easier. I bought this game despite it having some negative reviews and all I can say, it's better than I expected in most ways. This game is in, what I can say, pretty early in Alpha so if you want a fully-developed game, just wait a few months or a few years, who knows.
Also, I'd love it if it was possible to own a server for free, even if it's more limited, like you can only have 5 people on the server.

This game was great, when it came out. Unfortunately, it is dead and in the grave now. May 2021 was the last word that we heard from the devs and it is Mid August 22 now. 5 years ago this game was great, now it is another victim of EADS (Early Access Death Syndrome).

Just going to get to the point, I know this is EA, I'm keeping that in mind. (P.S I like this game a lot and hope it gets good updates)
1. A lot of things to craft (Armor,Weapons,Potions,Dyes,structures,etc...)
2. You can build houses, or even a castle
3. Combat is a little wonky imo, but not broken.
4. There is loot, You can find stuff almost anywhere, but most of time it's nothing good, and there is never really anything in chests, or anything amazing rather. (Assuming most people would think a chest would have something nice in it compared to a ruck sack or barrel).
5.There are NPC's, but, Most of them are useless, and do nothing (I'm sure that will change in the future).
6. There are only a handful of quests, but I do like that there are quests, and hope there to be more.
7. Landscape is pretty bare (and broken in a few spots)
8.Cities, and villages feel kind of dead since there is nothing to do other than loot everything.
I will change this as time goes on, but I have high hopes for this game, and really want to see this get well taken care of.
If you're looking for a full game, I advise you not to get it, but if you want to check it out, and support the devs, I suggest getting it.

I have to apologize to the developers, I first started this game at the end of a bad week after losing my close cousin and my pop. I reviewed the game unfairly and said some mean things I didn't mean. So I want to humbly apologize first off. Secondly I want to give an honest review of the game. Sure Valnir Rok has its bugs and random crashes but beyond that what is trying to be achieved here is something quite epic. As updates roll out the game targets in on what mmorpgs used to stand for... the immersion of one's self into another world and environment where the restrictions of life are set aside and you are the hero you always wanted to be. The game play is still in its infancy but is improving with each tweek. The environment and structures within are artistic and awe inspiring. The quest line is short currently but will soon be greatly extended. The developers are letting the players vote on what to add which is pretty cool in itself and is something you'll never see with larger companies. Overall the game has stunning potential and hours of adventure and fun ahead and i can't wait to see just how far this game will go just within the next year. Keep up the great work and once again... Sorry for turning my pain and anger towards y'all. Best wishes for a happy holiday season and the Merriest Christmas yet.

Firstly, I'd like to say ignore 90% of the bad reviews here. Most of them are from peeps who either have potato PC's or have played it for less than an hour and died, then moaned about the game being broken. Keeping in mind this is an Early Access game, there is alot to do and see. The combat is really well done albeit the enemy AI needs a little work, but you have to be selective with your attacks, dodges, blocks to manage your stamina. makes it alot more dynamic than just hitting something til it dies and you feel you achieved something when you solo kill a werewolf for eg. the whole Viking theme is really well done too, authentic looking gear and set pieces etc.
Graphics are nice too (not spud power rigs) and despite afew server lag issues and the occasional frame drops in cities, (due to the sheer size of them) Im getting a steady 70-80 fps all the time. The mechanics of sacrificing things to the gods to appease them is a nice touch and adds a reason to attack other peoples houses and steal thier artifacts etc. The actual home building is some of the best i've seen, with several upgrades available ie wood>clay>stone etc etc and there are several skill trees to spec into ie Building,Forging,Carpentry. the locations arent all generic flat ground either, I built my house inside the skeleton of a beached whale. Ofc there are alot of bugs atm but It's an Early Access game...a point everyone seems to miss. I bought this honestly not expecting too much but was suprised by how much there is already. The towns and places on the map are well detailed (the map itself being huge) and apart from the occasional placeholder, there is some really nice looking scenery. I realise Early access is the place promisses are made and rarely kept but you can really see the scope of what they are going for and its going well imo. I have had afew issues whilst playing ie cant spawn in, horses going insane but these bugs are to be expected in Early Access, its the whole point of it. The devs themeselves are helpful and really quick to reply/sort problems which in itself tells me there is more passion here than other Early access games.
Also, the most recent patch has fixed many of the issues mentioned in the negitive reviews on here, so again...ignore most of them.
All in all, great viking experience, would sacrifice to the gods again

Great game, Slightly buggy but with supportive Devs who are actively fixing them. rough around the edges but with more bug fixes and more content this is a great survival game.

This one will be short.
It *could* be a good game, but definitely wait a while. Too many issues at the moment (stuck in terrain, use "Unstuck" option, die immediately on unstuck, can't loot my stuff back after death)
I'd rate it "wait/10"

Where to start..
First off, I enjoyed the game when we weren't harassed, I really did. We spent a good 30 hours grinding materials 'n such, but the thing is there are so many exploits that it makes it not enjoyable.
The first two days we took the time to build a nice, decent-sized village, only for us to be raided within minutes by a single person because he had a weapon that did 4000 damage, when at the time the best weapons did 50-60. So we run in there, and of course he combat logs, because combat logging is still a thing, you have a good 4 minutes of protection once you log back in, and no timer to log off so he just logs in our base, but atleast he only got through a few foundations, not too bad.
Day 3 We rebuild, and end up getting raided while we were sleeping, the clan takes a good 90% of our base.
Day 4 we rebuild, 5 hours gone, no problem, they'll fix the broken weapon. Along comes a few teenagers, you can definitely tell by their voices, and they come in screaming, and we fight, I die, which is fine, and one loots me completely, which takes two seconds, you just have to hit F twice, and then logs off. He comes back 20 seconds later and just walks away with loot, and there's nothing we can do about it. Okay, whatever.
Day 5 I'm in an npc village, I'm looting random stuff, and I got one hit in the back. Oh, it was just the axe, oh well! Guy that logged out in our camp logs back in when I respawn! We fight a little and he combat logs. Okay, it's all good.
Day 6 We log on to have 5 guys outside, we fight, we are outnumbered/geared so we die and lose our stuff. Okay, not a problem, it was fair. We try to defend some more but it's in vain, oh well it was some good pvp!
Day 7 Log in to find our base 99% gone, just so much missing, we had a few houses and two layers of pallisades up. O well, we will rebuild in another location! Ground some hours and put up foundations and walls. Well it's late, time to sleep.
Day 8 Come back to find a couple layers of pallisades completely covering our base, set by the same clan, and we don't have much gear since we were completely wiped, so we can't break the walls down.
Day 9 Let's try a calmer server so we can actually get to see what end-game looks like, maybe we'll have some cool gear or something. Our group of 4 grinds for several hours, they do a lot more than I due to timezones, so I go to bed.
Day 10 Nice place build up, this is awesome! I go and finally have a chance to explore the beautiful map.
Day 11 Continue to build, explore, and fight some guys who are spamming chat! We beat em!
Day 12 Server we were working on is gone! It was an offical NA server.
Day 13 We gather up a handful of guys from that server that were friendly and go back to original server that we were destroyed multiple times on. Gather mats.
Day 14 Still gathering mats.
Day 15 Built huge stone base, with palliscades.
Day 16 Exploring, gathering resources, some pvp!
Day 17 Come back to find a well outside pallisades, and half base somehow destroyed? Clan-mate posts vid of him slashing at leader of enemy clan that walked into base, not doing any damage for several minutes, until the enemy leader turns around and attacks. Turns out to be original clan that attacks us day 3, admits to exploiting certain items in game to make it so that their armor stays enchanted with 5x the armor.
Day 18 Done 10/9/2017 @ 38 hours
-------------------- Update 10/12/2017 (Combat fix, workbenches/furnaces destroyable now)
Logged in to our half destroyed base, but hey, atleast our palisades are up, along with other people's wells outside so they can just hop over. Anyways, the biggest change I've seen in the couple hours I was on was just that you can't place those wells outside of people's bases anymore. I tested it and went to another base and the distance was substantially increased, so you have absolutely no chance of building close enough to where you can jump into someone's base.
Tested combat with some NPCs, nothing really different..attacked a boar and it hit me while it was backward, other enemies would run in a semicircle to turn around and attack, looked really odd. Other than that there's really nothing different besides workbenches/furnaces being able to be destroyed, but that should have been a thing from the start.
You still can't use a slider to choose the quantity of items you'd like to transfer though, which still annoys the heck out of me and I'm sure everyone else. Considering huge amounts of wood/stone/mortar are needed in order to make a base, you have to basically go one at a time in order to take any of those materials out and put in your inventory. Sure, there's the option to split stack the in half, but considering we have 3k wood in there and we're not even active shows that no one can split a stack in half since you can hold maybe 200 wood in your inventory, overencumbered.
Pallisades seem to have some issue to where they don't respond sometimes, which is the only new bug that I found, which was extremey frusturating, I hope you have multiple exits!
The server we mained on is still nonexistant, so sorry for any of you players that put in a dozen hours into grinding only to not have anything to show for it, heh! Server 1 of the North America's only has 11 people on currently, but gets populated later in the day.
Your favorite player is still alive and well, and he sends you a message!
https://gyazo.com/50fd47ed02f0fd300b853511e97a01e8
Will continue to test with the latest updates, as for now, I suggest holding off, I couldn't even get myself to continue to play for more than two hours, which only consisted of testing out known issues to see if they were fixed.
--------------------------------------------
Server wipe soon, when it happens we'll be doin more testing.
