Anger force is a bullet hell that spends all of its efforts on scraps of story, and grinding progression mechanics.
Both of these things help to extend the shelf life beyond what is being offered (several bullet hell stages with a handful of characters and difficulties), but it never feels like there is something of genuine interest beyond this.
The characters do genuinely feel and play differently. The range, patterns and abilities of each are quite different and this becomes more apparent as you unlock and upgrade more of their abilities. It’s a fine line to walk, but the upgrades often felt less like more character growing and more like my character’s potential was locked away and hindered behind an XP gate. A good example of progression is the growth you feel in something like the Arkham games where you are given adequate and fun mechanics and each addition seems to come with a corresponding rise in threat level or, at the very least, an opportunity for variety. These are vastly different games, but maybe this only serves to illustrate how the trappings of bullet hells don’t necessarily lend themselves to linear upgrades/power ups.
I can’t help but think of Jamestown, the bullet-hell retelling of the early US settlement. It managed to house a lot of content through its unlocks: none of these unlocks upgraded characters, but they did show progress by either helping players get familiar with mechanics (like combo chains) or giving new characters that offered new ways to play. There was also the added bonus of co-op. Its inventive story and stellar music and art helped to really set it apart and keep it engaging for someone who is admittedly a casual bullet-hell fan.
In Angerforce characters have more than just skills and stats to unlock. When you play as the characters in the campaign you unlock bits of story for each and you have to play harder difficulties in order to unlock more of the story. There is definitely ever put into the story, though it’s largely unnecessary. The difficulty is handled well between the different levels, but, given the genre, you’re eyes will be burned with the same patterns from playing over and over.
It has good production values and plays solid. The progression and unlocks might help increase the play time, but it doesn’t necessarily make the game that much more fun. If the loop of bullet hells is appealing, this is a decent option.

Rogue STG game. Players need to die and earn upgrades. It takes approximately 3000 points to fully upgrade, and in one round players may earn only 20 points. However the stage is super short.

A quality shmup, especially good for newcomers. It has 4 different characters/ships that differ slightly in the spread of the main shot, but have completely different special attacks (2 per ship) and a different style of superpower/bomb.
The game features a ton of upgrades that you can unlock for meta-progression, including stuff that makes the game easier (like more health), but also scoring related upgrades (e.g., longer combo time). After each level, you can choose to spend your currency on power-ups for the current run, or for meta progression.
It has four difficulty levels that you unlock one after the other, 7 great levels, and a good soundtrack. Training mode and local coop are also available. The graphics are good, and I like the art style. A must play for any shmup fan! 8.5/10

shumps with stuff to unlock make my brain want to keep replaying them. see also: rtype final, ginga force, uhh im sure theres more.
apart from that, its a fine vertical shump. different characters actually play differently enough to matter. its very pretty if you like sprite gfx. its not stupidly unfair, even on the higher difficulty settings.
i keep coming back to it and unlocking a few more upgrades, then shelving it for a few weeks. i enjoy it every time i pick it back up. for the price of a fast food combo meal, i couldnt ask for much more

AngerForce: Reloaded is a vertical scrolling shmup with what I can call action rpg elements. The game features 4 characters. Each with their own primary, 2 secondary and 1 bomb attack. At the conclusion of a game, experience points are awarded to purchase various upgrades from more damage or health to pulling picked toward you when throttled down your speed.
Speaking of speed, AngerForce: Reloaded features 3 movement speeds normal, fast and slow. In many shmups, the slow movement would be used for intricate dodging of bullet patterns. This is no different here save enemy bullets are on the faster side and get faster at higher difficulties. The really draw is going slow is to charge up your secondary attack meter to deliver more powerful attacks whose effects are dependent on the character your playing at the time. My favorite is Echo. She has a shorter ranged shotgun blast for one of her secondaries and a slow traveling but powerful and sizable blast radius proximity mine.
Depending on the player's selected difficulty determines the number of levels a play through has. With the higher difficulties introducing new levels interwoven with the levels found at lower difficulties. Between this, four characters and tons of generic and character specific upgrades, AngerForce: Reloaded offers plenty of replayablity.
As for difficulty, I'd say that AngerForce: Reloaded is on the easier side. Especially with the ability to upgrade the characters. However, it still offers a fair amount of challenge. Especially if a player wants to skip taking upgrades and play the arcade mode. If someone is looking to get started playing more modern shmups, I think AngerForce: Reloaded is a pretty good place to start.

A Psikyo-style shooting game (so non-bullet-hell/danmaku) with multiple characters, each with their own play style and traits, multiple attacks, all tied into the scoring system and some well designed enemies & rather cool looking bosses (which transform!). Multiple difficultuy levels to ease beginners into the game, a story to keep you interested and an upgrade system means that no play through is meaningless.
All in all, a well polished shooting game which would not be out of place on consoles.

I love shoot em ups and this looked really polished, similar to games like sky force reloaded. As it was in the sale i picked it up and wow im glad i did. The graphics are so clean! It has the perfect balance and depth in terms of difficulty curve and ranking up your characters. If you love shooters like sky force, jamestown etc you will love this. I will be putting in alot of hours into this game to try and get all the achievements.

Excellent shooter with great gameplay and interesting characters! Epic multi layered boss fights and amazing soundtrack. Upgrade system that is decent but not overwhelming. I really recommend this one. Also if you like AngerForce you should try Jamestown+ as it's a very similar vibe.

Really fun shmup. Love the campaign mode, has an upgrade system, you collect orbs and upgrade. There is a fair bit of gringing, but it really adds to the overall value. There is a fair amount of depth for a shmup. I really love shmups, but the last few I have bought really havent kept my attention. This ones a must have!
