Play this game as a fan of SAO and I'd think you'll enjoy it that way.

If you're a fan of SAO or JRPGs, then there is something to enjoy here. While the game does have a lot of visual novel-esque segments, there is a lot of content here including an enjoyable multiplayer mode. I give it a solid 7/10.

this game worked fin for a while then all of a sudden when I went in further in the Hallow Area the game started to freeze where it would either force open map which I couldn't close and/or the screen would go black all with sound still playing in background. I also couldn't close the game unless I went through steam. Other demanding games especially online games didn't freeze.

I remember when I first heard of an SAO game which was Infinity Moment, I really wanted to get the game as a SAO fan but later see that its not getting an English localization. Then they made a remake it off it on the PS Vita which made me save up to get a Vita and bought Hollow Fragment.
And now here playing it on Steam.
The game is really for SAO fan and mostly will need to watch the anime or at least on the first arc from the first season of the show after they reach floor 75 since this is where the story of the game begins.
Hollow Fragment is set on a alternate timeline that is set differently from the anime or light novels after the characters reach the 75th floor. The story is different from the original with a different scenario and new characters that does not exist in the original. Future game title after Hollow Fragment are mostly sequels to it with some similarities on incidents happening from the original.
Hollow fragment plot is mainly the team have to keep pushing through to beat thee game by reaching the 100th floor while encountering a new place to explore which is the hollow area and meeting new characters.
The other plot is more for fans to see more interaction with the other characters be it bonding or just filler (mostly).
The gameplay is alright in my opinion. Combat is fine with skills to earn and use to defeat enemies. Games objectives are mostly a repetitive structure on reaching the floor's boss and defeat them to then progress the to next floor level and repeat again until you reach the 100th floor. The other one is the Hollow area where Kirito explores to uncover the mystery of what is the hollow area with Philia who is the new character Kirito meet's when randomly appear in the hollow area.
I'll say its a fine game and was design for the fans. I do say the later games after this did get better than this like the next game after this which is the sequel of it SAO Lost Song with the gameplay completely different due to be more of an action base game but the next game after that is Hollow Realization where it's like a mix of Hollow Fragment and Lost Song.
