So I bought the game XCOM2 WOTC. Startscreen says XCOM2 WOTC (in red under the title) With every turn I get a "red screen error". Ok, I press escape, whatever. No explanation what so ever, no communication to what I am seeing. Turns out, I wasn't playing WOTC at all. Yes the title says WOTC, but it just isn't. Bad experience 0/5 (since I literally had no acces to the content, for no reason). Riddled with bugs experience. I regret my purchase deeply.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown's major DLC, Enemy Within, was a major step forward for the game. It added variety, but it was most notable for its attempts to refine the base game's flaws, encouraging more aggressive & exciting play. XCOM 2: War of the Chosen is of a similar scale (if not larger), but its focus is far less on patching things up and more on building things out. It's the best XCOM from Firaxis yet, though the series' flaws still show. The variety that WotC brings is a real treat. The new factional units are a delight to play with, likely slightly better than the average XCOM soldier but mitigated by their lack of availability. The Chosen add some variety and chaos to missions, though their impact can be a bit lacking or predictable. The new enemy units are maybe more interesting than threatening, but still welcome changeups that meaningfully affect how fights play out. The Lost are a fun (and especially chaotic) bit of variety that slightly disappoint only for how underutilized they end up. These are only the most obvious additions - bonds, SITREPs, resistance orders, and covert actions all contribute to making sure no two missions never feel quite the same. Some of these additions shake up the formula in ways that mitigate some of the series' weaker points. Writing has never been a strong suit, with characters that feel like comic book caricatures & a functional but utterly ambitionless plot. The Chosen add color, each with strong, scenery-chewing personalities that don't exactly elevate the game narratively, but at least add some charisma. (On that note, shoutout to the initial Templar unit, whose VA brings some fun "Raul Julia's M. Bison" energy.) More on the tactical side, the series has struggled with a bell-shaped difficulty curve, with a full squad of maxed-out soldiers completely wrecking shop. Covert actions help this, encouraging more high-level soldiers and ultimately requiring a more rounded roster of soldiers rather than a god-squad of six. However, it's still XCOM. Play is satisfying and addictive, but not necessarily challenging. After a 50-hour campaign, I can count the number of times I had to carefully deliberate on one hand. Good moves are often obvious, and if the mission isn't providing incentive to play aggressively (unusual on average, typical for key plot missions), good moves are also often tedious. Chance is king in XCOM - chance to hit, chance to crit, chance to die or bleed out, chance for a research breakthrough, chance for time to recover before a new mission demands your soldiers. It adds variety and surprise, but the need for luck mitigation throttles the space for complex plays. Ultimately, you learn what you need to play the game effectively in the first 5-10 hours tops, and the remaining time's learning is toying with the new bits of equipment & abilities you're drip-fed. It's fun in the moment, but looking back, how did I get through a tactical game this long with so few moments of truly satisfying puzzle-solving? All this leads to a game that peaks somewhere between the first and second third, both in difficulty and enjoyment. (Yes, covert actions mitigate the god-squad problem, but only by delaying it.) I was convinced I'd give WotC a 9/10 for most of my playtime, but as you can tell from the tone of this review, my feelings complicated as I exited the Firaxis one-more-turn trance and actually reflected on my experience. The back third has little new to show, and the ending showcases little of what's great about XCOM and most of what's iffy. XCOM 2: War of the Chosen is still solidly worthwhile overall, but it benefits from checked expectations. I'd recommend Tactical Breach Wizards over this, but WotC has me curious to try out Chimera Squad at some point and see what Firaxis does with a leaner, more focused experience. 8/10

Super fucking hard coming from a casual to Turn Based Tactics strategy games. I very very much enjoy strategy games of all caliber, Crusader kings 3, Stellaris, Dune spice wars, old fallout games etc. I am still trying to get good at the game. In terms of difficulty its on the same level of punishing as a souls game but with different gameplay obviously.

Loved Xcom 1. Enjoyed 2 the first time around but even though it was a little more complex, something felt like it was missing. This expansion has rounded the game out beautifully, I'm really impressed. I wish all expansions were as considered and comprehensive as this. Just finished my first ever Ironman run (on Xbox) and honestly it was one of the most rewarding gaming experiences I've had for sometime. Highly recommend and looking forward to the third if / when we get it.
