A rough gem to be sure. Bloodlines is one of my favourite games of all time, and after finishing my 5th playthrough of it I figured it was finally time to give its predecessor a chance. I had a pretty mixed experience, but I also enjoyed it more than I expected.
The biggest highlight of this game is its story, which I really loved. The shift between the dark ages and the modern era is really damn cool. The writing as well struck me, especially the dialogues between the characters. It really felt like I was playing a gothic novel. The atmosphere as a whole was also on-point, I enjoyed looking around the map in first person and admiring the dated yet charming visuals.
But as I mentioned this game is really rough. The combat and dungeon crawling aspect is fun, but only when it wants to be. The party ai is kind of atrocious, you get some control over them but they tend to waste blood constantly and run after enemies across the level and die. This makes a lot of sections needlessly frustrating and it tested my patience thoroughly. The pacing as a whole was also scuffed, with some levels dragging on much longer than they should and parts of the game feelng like they're there purely for padding.
Even so, I look back at Redemption fondly after finishing it. It hasn't aged too well, but its redeeming qualities made for an overall fun experience. If you're a vampire fan that has the patience for older games like me, give it a try.

If ever there was a game that I desperately wish would get a straight across update to a brand new game engine. This is it.
This game is/was one of the most engrossing games I have ever played. Magnificent story backed with incredible settings and an immaculate soundtrack.
I played it at release. Sadly, in its current state, its just too rough to play through.
Though I wish it could happen, I would terrified to see how certain groups would try to rewrite it for "modern audiences" and ruin it. If a carbon copy of dialogue and story could be taken and moved to a brand new game engine, while keeping all settings, groups, and story elements the same; it could be pure gold.
A work of art for its time, and in desperate need to being rebuild for higher end systems.
