Epic Battle Fantasy 5 is a turn-based RPG that masterfully blends humor, strategy, and nostalgia. Developed by Matt Roszak, the game serves as both a parody and a tribute to classic JRPGs, offering players a delightful experience filled with pop culture references, witty dialogue, and engaging gameplay mechanics.
The game's narrative centers around Matt, a hardcore gamer who, after a power outage, embarks on an unexpected adventure. Accompanied by a diverse cast of characters, including the enigmatic NoLegs, a limbless cat knight, and the fiery mage Natalie, Matt navigates a world teeming with quirky enemies and hidden treasures. The story, while not deeply complex, is rich in humor and charm, providing a lighthearted backdrop to the game's events.
Combat in Epic Battle Fantasy 5 is turn-based, featuring a cooldown system instead of traditional MP. This shift encourages players to think strategically about skill usage and timing. The game introduces a unique monster capture mechanic, allowing players to catch almost any enemy, including bosses, and summon them during battles. This adds a layer of depth and variety, as different monsters offer unique abilities and advantages.
The game's world is expansive, with over 200 enemies to encounter and a plethora of equipment and skills to discover. The inclusion of weather conditions and elemental interactions, such as combining wet and thunder statuses for massive damage, adds complexity to battles. Additionally, the game features optional dungeons and challenges, extending gameplay well beyond the main story.
While the game is accessible to both casual and hardcore RPG players, it does have its challenges. Some players have noted that the cooldown system can be restrictive for certain characters, particularly Lance, whose most powerful skills have long cooldowns. Additionally, the monster summon system, while innovative, can feel underutilized due to the limited summon points available during battles.
Despite these minor drawbacks, Epic Battle Fantasy 5 offers a rich and rewarding experience. Its blend of humor, strategy, and homage to classic RPGs makes it a standout title in the genre. Whether you're a fan of turn-based combat or simply looking for a game that doesn't take itself too seriously, Epic Battle Fantasy 5 delivers an enjoyable and memorable adventure.

This game is a shining example of how old tropes and mechanics are perfectly fine if they're done well. It doesn't do anything crazy but it doesn't NEED to because it's the quintessential turn-based RPG experience. It's a little short for the genre but the great pacing means you don't feel like you got shorted, nor does it drag on long enough to get boring. It even offers some new game plus options if you ever want to play it again! Any fan of turn-based combat will love this game.

TL;DR: For those that know the name, its the usual formula but way more refined. For those that don't Imagine Final Fantasy with a more in depth battle system and a not so good story. Sprinkle in thousands of references to other video games, anime, pop culture moments, etc, and tons of replayablity and secret modes - and thats what this experience is. You can experiment and break the game difficulty, or make it painstakingly impossible.

A blast to the past that I finally relived after time long overdue, EBF5 is an underrated gem among old flash games and this paid version is beyond worth it. There is NEVER a shortage of things to do in this game, and it's got a huge cast of funny, quirky characters that wouldn't seem like they'd get along but really do! Seriously an amazing game, if you love RPG games, give this a try, you won't regret it.

Very Epic would recommend to any RPG fan. Crazy to think this was done by basically one guy, you could easily spend 100+ hours one just one playthrough. I also like that it isnt 100GBs, this could run on my RAM forever and I wouldn't mind.
