This game is a masterpiece. One of the best games ever made. Really love the unique camera angles, and the old school retro graphics. The developers etc Did an amazing job on the whole game, really love the map designs, such beautiful pieces of art!

I finished the game in less than 3 hours, and it was still a lot of fun. Compared to the newer remake, this version is shorter, but the remake is longer and more challenging, with plenty of weapon attachments and secrets to discover.
You will never regret buying this game. I only wish it had achievements, as that would make it even more worth the purchase. I hope Capcom reads my message and adds them someday, even though this game is more than a decade old and was originally released before I was born in 1997!

To run on Linux, run protontricks, select the game, then open regedit and manually import re2_english.reg from the game folder. Otherwise you get an error in the Launcher when it asks you whether you want to register registry
Anyway this is a lazy "port" and not worth getting, just pirate or get it from gog instead. It's nice that they decided to put the old games on Steam but I just wish they had put more effort into it...

Playing through with HD mods and modern controls with quick knife use, I have loved resident evil 2 since the n64 times and it is quite fun to sit down and play on a OLED tv and it be so clear with the HD mod. If youre looking to relive this game id recommend with a few mods.

I can't in good conscience recommend this release of the game so long as it has Enigma slapped on it, on top of that it doesn't even launch 90% of the time and the 10% of the time it does, it just crashes. By now there are plenty of superior ways you can enjoy this masterpiece, this miserable cash grab of a release is not one of them.

Great game, a bit outdated, but still very enjoyable.
Graphics are nice for the time, definitely outdated by modern standards, but you get used to them fairly quickly. The environments are full of detail, bringing the ruined streets of Raccoon City, the police station and the underground facilities to life. Character and enemy animations are good overall, especially considering the game's age; a lot of them were updated to be faster and less tedious.
Sound effects are great. The zombies, monsters, gunshots, footsteps and environmental sounds all contribute heavily to the tension and atmosphere. The game does a great job of making you feel uneasy even when nothing is happening. Speaking of music, the soundtrack continues to be excellent, creating suspense, anxiety and occasionally brief moments of relief. Many of the tracks are iconic and remain some of the best in the entire franchise. The voice acting is definitely way better than the original Resident Evil, although some of the dialogue can still be awkward at times.
Gameplay continues to be great and very engaging. Combat is still not about running around like an action hero and killing everything without thinking. Ammunition and healing resources are limited, so every encounter forces you to make decisions. Sometimes it's worth spending resources to clear an area, and other times it's smarter to avoid enemies entirely and save supplies for later. And in this one, there are a lot of areas full of zombies, so you'll be avoiding combat in various places.
The game heavily rewards preparation and exploration. You need to pay attention to your inventory management, puzzle solutions, routes through the police station and resource usage. Choosing what items to carry with you is constantly important because inventory space is limited. Although it is more generous than the first one.
This time the puzzles feel a bit repetitive, even using some of the same elements as the previous one. Nevertheless, it works.
The A and B scenario system was interesting. Playing through both characters allows you to experience different events, areas and story perspectives. Some actions in one scenario can affect the other, adding replay value and making the story feel larger than a single playthrough. Although some parts feel weird, because you make some of the same puzzles with the same elements as the previous character, which doesn't make sense.
The enemies remain mostly the same. The few new additions are great and add a great challenge.
The story is very simple, but still very effective and memorable. The outbreak in Raccoon City, the mystery surrounding Umbrella and the journey of Leon and Claire make for an engaging experience from start to finish. Also, the different characters that you encounter while playing with one protagonist or the other are a welcome addition, same with not having to rescue anyone.
The additional game modes are welcome additions. Instead of replaying the same, you have different modes with different characters, weapons, starting locations, enemies, and objectives, which add a lot of replayability.
In short, great game, a bit outdated, but still worth experiencing. If you are a fan of the genre and the series, give it a chance, and you won't regret it.

Had to uninstall after one playthrough because Enigma DRM's background processes were making my browser tabs crash.
This is a great game but if you have a weak PC I can't recommend this version of it.

Replayed for the first time in ~15 years and honestly, I understand now why people still talk about the original.
The biggest surprise wasn't nostalgia. It was how much Capcom changed in the remake. Same setting, same characters, same lore, but they feel like two completely different games.
What I liked most in the original is the story and character interactions. Ada is much more involved in the plot, Birkin family gets more screen time, and Claire, Leon, Sherry and Annette feel connected throughout the whole game. It also fits first game better, especially with Ada's backstory and Umbrella investigation. You actually spend a lot of time with the main cast instead of just meeting them for a few cutscenes.
The atmosphere of Raccoon City is fantastic. The sound design sells the feeling that the city is completely dead and beyond saving. The opening streets are still some of the best parts of the game.
The A/B scenario system is also great. Decisions from your first run carry into the second one, enemy placements change, routes change, and the second playthrough feels different enough to justify playing it.
That said, the game definitely shows its age. Tank controls take time to adjust to, boss fights are simple compared to modern standards, and once you leave the police station the pacing becomes extremely fast. The sewers and lab feel much shorter than I remembered and you're basically sprinting toward the ending.
After replaying the original, I don't think RE2 Remake replaced it. They're both worth playing. The remake improved many things, but the original still has strengths that were lost along the way.
A classic for a reason.
