I discovered this series around 9 years ago and replayed through it again recently. It's still fire as hell and one of my favorites to this day despite the 1st and 2nd game looking a little dated graphically (understandably, these games are old). If you like zany anime mystery killing games with gameplay elements (not just reading), to me this series is the BLUEPRINT for that. I also find that everyone I introduce this series to has at least one character they really love from it. I think there's something for almost everyone in Danganronpa. I've seen some people mention the story being a little weak, which I understand and agree with if you only play the first game on its own. To get the full scope of the Danganronpa experience, I recommend plaything through game 1 -> game 2 -> watching the anime -> playing Ultra Despair Girls -> v3. The story is a lot more vast than you might think, but it is a LOT of time to sink into one series if you're not completely in love with it. 10/10 certified hood classic

I would say this is the most interesting visual novel game I have ever played until now. The story starts with great pacing, and the first trial is a very exciting and good way to start a game. The first half of the story is very good, and as I said before, the pacing is balanced and it raises a new question with the beginning of every new chapter. However, the other half, to be specific from chapter 5, the quality of the story drops noticeably. It is like they started a very interesting story in a sealed school, but they want to create a reason for the player to not go out of the hellish school that he is entrapped in, and the reason is so poorly made and constructed. The trial gameplay consists of four stages of quick time events, which are Nonstop Debate, Hangman's Gambit, and Closing Argument. They are really thrilling and add a very important element to the trial in each chapter, and to make this review as spoiler-free as I can, I will stop here. The free time is a nice touch in this game. It is the time that you can use to spend with any fellow student in the school, and by spending the time with them, you learn more about their backstory and how they ended up in this school like you. Spending time with the students is very important, actually. Not only can you learn about their past, but you also gain skills and increase your skill points so you can use more than one skill that helps you in the four stages of quick time events in the class trial. One downside to it is, you don't know when the character you are trying to gain skills from will die, so it may be all for nothing in your case. It happened to me with two characters. You shouldn't stress about it, take it as part of the gameplay, and just enjoy the game. Overall, I would give this game 8.0/10. I would recommend it.

Amazing story telling. Arguably the best or second best (Ace Attorney being the only other game in my mind) depending on how much you focus on the class trial aspects. Solid 8/10

I find the story pretty mediocre which unfortunately is a bit of a killer for visual novels like this. The mysteries themselves are OK, but the central plot and cast are all fairly weak. There is a fairly decent amount of content and replay-ability, including some post game stuff. Due it not really being an explicitly "bad" game, I'm going to hesitantly recommend it, but I do feel for most people there are better products worth spending money on if you're looking to get your murder mystery VN fix (The various Ace Attorney collections, Zero Escape: The Nonary Games (honestly just for 999), hell even Ghost Trick if you count that.)

I'm glad the person who recommended me this game was my ultimate hope. :) Thank you and to anyone reading this Danganronpa is absolutely worth it as it's a reminder of even in those tough moments there will always be hope and even when you feel despair crawl in your not alone, my ultimate hope reminded me of that. :)

Completely missed the series during it's peak popularity, but finally got around to it and I still think it absolutely worth it to pickup and play. The story is very enjoyable, even with some sections feeling slightly too handholdy I just found the trial minigames fun enough to overlook some elements of it. Characters are memorable and there is a nice mix of big personalities. If you are going for 100% there is quite some extra grind after finishing main story, but personally I didn't feel like the main playthrough dragged on too long for any of the sections.
