A Great first outing into what would later become a pretty well known series, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is fun from beginning to end. Mixing first person shooter mechanics with a captivating mystery plot visual novel ,and a surprisingly heartfelt ending it had me second guessing myself when it came to just what was going on!? The characters added onto this with their dynamic personalities and fun interactions and the stakes of the death game being played where quite fun to see unfold. The Pros: Great Voice acting, A Diverse And Unique Cast, An Enticing Mystery. The Cons: Some ideas feel like they need to be a little more fleshed out. but what is there makes up for it.

Danganronpa feels like a game you shouldn't be enjoying as much as you do, but I promise it's worth it.

Normally I prefer gameplay over story when it comes to games. Why bother purchasing a game for the story when you can just watch it all unfold on youtube. The only exception to this rule is murder mysteries because I love solving murder mysteries. The base formula for this game really caught my eye and I'll explain why: The Formula: Danganronpa has a very intriguing set up. A group of 15 students are locked up in a school and the only way to escape is to kill another student and don't get caught and they commit. This is truly a game where anyone can die. Now this is still a very scripted sequence, the order of victims and killers cannot be changed... though you can change who you hang out with when there isn't a murder to solve. These segments help flesh out the characters but also makes you hesitant as you don't want to get too attached in case your newfound favorite dies. The Mysteries: The individual murders are on the easy side here. This game suffers from having one clue that gives away who the killer is before your allowed to solve the crime (Chapter 1 has a meme because of this). I think that this makes it more approachable for people who are new to mystery solving and can prepare you for some of the later games. That said the overall mystery and ending twist caught me completely by surprise, and the callbacks to early foreshadowing made it incredibly cool to solve. That's why this game needs to be played 100% blind. The Setting: What sets this game apart from the later games is the setting. The 3-D environment of the school is both cool to explore and incredibly depressing. The hallways are shrouded in dark purple and all the windows have been boarded up, preventing any natural light from reaching the students, all while the most relaxing yet haunting tune plays ("Beautiful Dead". Look it up). It's because of this and the character personal reasons why I can understand the actions of the murderers in this game as oppose to future games. The Bad: The Class Trial Gameplay, which is where you solve the crime, isn't all that great. You have to use evidence to disprove false statements made by the other characters. The issue is when you miss your chance, you have to just fastforward through the rest of conversation for it to repeat. There's no way to check each individual statement. I understand why, in universe these class trials are on a time limit so they need to use these to waste your time. There is a side mode that you get after beating the game and it's kinda nothing. Overall good game. Interesting story. I won't blame you if you check it out on youtube. Loved the Game Grumps lets play of this one.

First time I played it a few years ago I found it entertaining, but coming back to it I've realized the translations, general writing and storytelling are quite disappointing. Game has good music but most everything else was pretty bad. (also the sexualisation of the underage characters makes the whole thing even worse) If you're thinking of buying this, I would recommend looking into a fairly new indie game called "Of the Devil" which has a free fully fleshed out demo case and supporting its creators.

Great mystery game. Great story with an overall convincing and fun point-and-click detective structure. Some minor flaws, but overall probably still a B-B+ "Do not say: ‘I have sinned much, and therefore I am not bold enough to fall down before God.’ Do not despair. Simply do not increase your sins in despair and, with the help of the All-merciful One, you will not be put to shame. For He said, ‘he who comes to Me I will not cast out.’ (John. 6:37) And so, be bold and believe that He is pure and cleanses those who draw near to Him. If you want to accomplish true repentance, show it with your deeds. If you have fallen into pride, show humility; if into drunkenness, show sobriety; if into defilement, show purity of life. For it is said, ‘Turn away from evil and do good.’ (I Pet. 3:11)” - Saint Gennadius of Constantinople

first off, THE SOUNDTRACK???? did the "ultimate music composer" make it or smth lmao its insanely good i remember during 2020-2021 danganronpa hype , i tried watching it on youtube but its really not interesting like that. you have to play it because you realize stuff at your own pace. that being said, trials 2 , 3 and last one were crazy good and had me on edge of seat constantly. kyoko was clutching every chapter lmao. i look forward to danganronpa 2 <3

If I was rating games purely on their story and how it unfolded, this would probably be one of the greatest games of all time. Masterful delivery, most characters were deep and complex individuals. The gameplay isn't anything fancy. Point, click, read and then the trials. Going to watch the anime now. Highly recommend.

I have only few criticisms regarding this game. Not all characters have the same level of depth, another dimension. And the resolution of the cases has some very unnecessary elements, like the bullet time battles. But the greater plot is great and so are the individual cases. Usually, I'm pretty good at figuring out what happened before the resolution. For this game I only once figured out about 90% of the events, in all other cases I was pretty much completely blindsided. 84/100
