Wayward Reviews

You awake to discover yourself no longer in the company of good men or a fine seafaring vessel. Treasure... you remember something about treasure. Wayward is a challenging turn-based, top-down, wilderness survival roguelike. Explore, build, and most importantly survive in these unforgiving lands.

Honestly, as someone who started playing the free version of this game before this one came out, and to this day likes that version a lot and was very excited to see some new things added to the game: i wish they had kept the controls more similar to the free version and just expanded the items, crafting recipes, etc within that format, i think this version of the game is a lot clunkier and it is harder to get into a flow state with it. Which sucks because it's awesome to see so many new things to craft and plants and to have the disassemble feature.

I want to enjoy Wayward, but it fails at the most important aspect of crafting games: Interface. Item icons are extremely difficult to tell apart, there are way too many of them and simple actions are too convoluted. It's a shame, because clearly a lot of work has been done to make it customizable, but as it stands the game is painful to play. A big design flaw for a game like this is the crafting recipe discovery. You will only gain the recipe after gathering the necessary items, but your inventory is weight-limited, and even with storage in chests this becomes an issue - figuring out what to do with items will often require having a wiki open. After failing to get recipe for a tin bar because of some random missing item I decided to give up.
