I feel it is important to get one thing out of the way given how, when First Light was revealed, nearly everyone saw IOI was behind it as completely unsurprising. Out of the many games that have clear inspiration from Ian Fleming’s seminal spy series, the Hitman games (particularly World Of Assassination) clearly had some fanboys in the studio. From the fine suits, to the greater than life villains and socialite infiltration, it’s so easy to see why they were given the chance to make a brand new story in this world. But this absolutely does not play like Hitman, and you will be disappointed if that is what you’re after. This is an Uncharted 2-esque story oriented game that happens to give more options to progress the story, but has a structured pace, setpieces and intended flow. If you are cool with it, I guarantee you’ll enjoy this game, regardless if you are a fan or not of the IP, because this game was a total blast to play through. This is just a great take on the material in nearly every front, and best of all it’s clear this is absolutely a new continuity in the service of original videogames, rather than a simple imitation of a specific film. Nearly all of the cast bring their A game, with the main antagonist being a particular highlight with how much you can tell the actor is loving chewing the scenery. MI6 regulars Q and Moneypenny are easily in the top 3 takes on the characters with how they bounce back of our titular man, who I must say truly manages to be a worthy iteration of the iconic character. Gibson’s portrayal is a wonderful combination of other actors' traits (such as Dalton’s lethality or Brosnan’s magnificent smugness) that still manages to be fresh thanks to his endless underserved self-confidence that remains enjoyable instead of grating due to the constant butting against other strong-headed characters. Almost all chapters have a solid structure that involves setting up the mission, exploration with some options to complete objectives, to slowly funnel you into situations that allow stealth or combat, and finally we reach set piece mode where stuff explodes. This constantly keeps the pacing at a good rhythm, and allows good downtime to not exhaust. The spy and sneaking will be familiar to anyone who played modern stealth games, but don’t expect as much versatility or lethality. Bond is trying to remain undetected after all, so use of different gadgets with the environment, seeking alternative routes, or using the bluffing mechanic to walk in and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ your way around is the name of the game, and while it works well, it does feel a bit limited overall. It’s a good thing then that when the game ramps up, it goes all out with no breaks. Gunplay is smooth and the gadgets work great in combat situations if you know how to best use them, with the weapon throws in particular being both mechanically satisfying, while keeping you mobile. To me the highlight is the melee combat, it just clicks incredibly well, and always somehow creates moments of total slapstick comedy, while sounding and looking great thanks to reactive scenery and the animation work. Everything works in service of the narrative, which was overall compelling, had a lot of unexpected twists, and kept me interested in what would happen next. I just lament that the postgame, TacSim, feels a bit barren overall, mostly due to the lack of user-made challenges like Contracts mode from Hitman. This mode is still really fun to mess around with, and hopefully new content will be added soon. I really cannot think of any serious issues with the game as is, it’s very clear this was a passion project for the developers, and you can feel the dedication to the craft in every regard. Maybe I would wish the game had more options to disable accessibility features (such as waypoints) inside intended difficulty. If this is the start of a new trilogy, then I personally am totally sold on whatever comes next.

We all had that feeling, after leaving a 007 movie, of trying to adopt his personality and charm for a day. This game is 20+ hours of that feeling. Been forever since a singleplayer game engrossed me this much with its performances, writing, and smooth flow.

Good game, but it left me a bit conflicted, mostly because of my own expectations going in knowing its a IO game. I expected something closer to a Hitman-style 007 game. It isn't that. Actually, they stripped many mechanics that they had in those games that gave you freedom. This is a fantastic James Bond game. The story, gadgets, dialogue, and overall presentation all feel exactly like a proper 007 adventure. The thing is, by building the game around Bond as a character, you're naturally limiting player freedom. The story and moral framework mean you can't just do whatever you want. This is a on rails experience. If you're expecting Hitman, don't expect to freely change disguises, take out anyone you want, or switch between going in guns blazing and stealth whenever you feel like it. The game is much more structured and narrative-driven. This is also a very easy game, with barely any challenge when it comes to stealth. That said, IO improved the engine in a lot of ways, and holy moly, the driving sections were incredible. I honestly wish there were more of them because they were some of my favorite parts of the game. In the end, I loved playing it and can't wait for the next one. I recommend it, but go into it with a different mindset than when you play Hitman. Once I adjusted my expectations, I had a great time seeing this as a Narrative game.

Action/stealth game in which you play as a young James Bond and learn about his beginnings as an MI6 spy First of all, I'd like to thank the creators of 007 First Light at IO Interactive for creating such an outstanding production. I'm a huge fan of story-driven games like this James Bond game. It's one of the few games in which I can find no major flaws, I loved everything about it. I could only point out two things I didn't like, the game's short duration and the car collision system, which, however, didn't really matter, as the game didn't feature many such situations. Apart from that, everything was top-notch the story, the graphics, the sound design, and the missions set in various locations around the world. I invite you to read my review ✅I really liked that, like in James Bond films, the game takes place in multiple countries and cities. Sometimes we complete missions in wintry, snowy locations; other times we find ourselves in a hot desert or tropical regions. This gives each mission its own unique atmosphere ✅Another thing I liked was the great freedom in completing missions. The developers didn't force me to complete each mission in a single, predetermined way. In many situations, I could decide for myself whether to act stealthily, avoid enemies, use spy gadgets, or simply start a firefight ✅Great storyline shows Bond's journey from the beginning to becoming 007 (training arc, MI6, etc.) ✅Fortunately, the developers are committed to developing the game, and another major DLC with story missions will be available soon ✅The graphics are of a very high standard. As I mentioned above, the locations are very diverse, from wintry, snowy terrains through deserts to more exotic locations. Each region has its own beautiful landscapes and unique atmosphere (you can find them in the screenshots on my profile). The gameplay style is strongly influenced by James Bond films ✅I really liked the varied pace, which combines quiet moments of espionage with dynamic action. The beginning is dominated by cutscenes and a slower introduction to Bond's story. Later, there's more stealth, planning, and moderate action. Later in the game, the pace quickens and becomes more intense, with more combat and chases ✅Many missions could be solved in various ways. For example, in missions with "information gathering" objectives, we could eavesdrop on conversations from a hidden location and discover where something is located, or hack computers, extract information through dialogue and deception, or pickpocket. Of course, I've only given one example, as there are other missions that require different methods ✅The game features a bluff/impersonation system. Bond can pretend to have a "right to be there," pass through zones without combat, and exploit dialogue and social situations. This creates a cool intelligence agent atmosphere ✅The shooting in the game is pleasantly dynamic, fast, and very cinematic. The system isn't complicated; movement, use of cover, and quick reactions to situations are key Several firearms are available in the game, primarily pistols, pistols with silencers, rifles, automatic weapons, and some shotguns ✅Spy gadgets are available, unlocked as you progress, and they aid in both stealth and combat. Hacking systems, disabling security, using spy devices, and distracting enemies make each mission more tactical ✅Excellent sound design. The music perfectly fits the game's atmosphere and often resembles soundtracks from James Bond films. It builds tension in quieter moments and adds excitement during dynamic action scenes ✅The Tactical Simulations mode allows you to unlock and equip various weapons, gadgets, and their upgrades, and then use them in TacSim challenges ✅Three difficulty levels: easy, normal, and hard ✅Plenty of Easter eggs and references to Bond films, while maintaining the atmosphere of this universe ✅Interactive MI6, collectibles, and notes ✅❌I would certainly count this as a plus but I know that not everyone likes linear games, so you will have to decide for yourself whether you like them ❌I would of course consider this a positive, but I know that not everyone likes linear games, so you have to decide for yourself whether you like linear games ❌Unfortunately the game ends quickly ✅✅ Verdict: [strike] Terrible [/strike] , [strike] Bad [/strike] , [strike] Mediocre [/strike] , [strike] Decent [/strike], [strike] Good [/strike] , [strike] Very Good [/strike] , [strike] Excellent [/strike] , Masterpiece
If you'd like to see more of my reviews, you can find them on my curator page: CuratorKingViking and on my group: GroupKingViking If you have any questions about my reviews, feel free to ask. 007 First Light is the perfect example of modern AAA game development and all that's both good and bad about it. Here's the nutshell: The gameplay mechanics (shooting, brawling, investigation) are strong and compelling and the game is full of jaw dropping environments that will stick in your memory for years. It is also about as much of a interactive movie as it is a video game. While I personally prefer challenge in games, I don't think twice about it if people want to breeze through games with little challenge. The problem, though, is less so the challenge and more the design. You don't make progress in this game as much as it pulls you along, always showing you what you need to do. Not sure where to go? Look for the blue tarp, or the yellow blanket, or arrows as they're everywhere. Not sure how to solve a stealth or investigative puzzle? Scan the world with your Q-watch and interactive items turn bright yellow. Then go interact with one of those bright yellow objects, someone will move in reaction to that; ta-da, you've "solved" the puzzle. This isn't something that can be fixed by raising enemy stats and lowering resources, which is what the higher difficulty level does. The game is very much designed to move you along with minimal problem solving. After a while I wasn't feeling like I accomplished anything but instead just did the thing they more or less told me to do. This isn't an edgy "git gud" rant nor a "things were better in my day" poem, it's just that the game almost plays itself for you in many ways. You move the character, but you move it to the GO HERE or DO THIS signifier. That is something that has changed in the last 15 or so years, spearheaded by Sony's first-party set-piece simulators like the Uncharted series, with which this game shares many similarities. Worse than the difficulty is the dialogue. There is non-stop, wall-to-wall chatter, which completely and totally kills the atmosphere and immersion of trying to sneak around in danger and silence. This is the worst facet of the game by a distance. Yes, nearly all AAA games do this, but just because most of them do it doesn't mean I'll ever stop hating it. And of course what comprises about 75% of that chatter? It's banter. Quips. Back-and-forth. At one point me and the gruff, jaded, unfriendly supervisor character (Greenway) -- a fantastic character otherwise -- are sneaking through an office building trading non-stop barbs back and forth. Like 20 straight minutes of it. Can we pretend for a second that there's actual danger here, that we've both been through hell and there still could be more awaiting us if we're not quiet and careful? Nope. Quip, quip, quip. A good 'ol time. This section is almost like a buddy comedy. Or another section where I'm sneaking through some heavily secured back rooms with guards everywhere looking to end me, and I'm on my earpiece bantering with Moneypenny about the date she's on. It's hard to find something more immersion breaking than this. Why is it so necessary to always follow the trite Hollywood blockbuster formula in AAA game writing? It sure sounds like I hate this game, but I actually enjoyed it overall and sometimes in spite of itself. I wouldn't have spent 21 hours with it if I wasn't enjoying it. I'm saying these things more out of disappointment because there's a hell of a game here in many ways. The gunplay feels and sounds great and those sections are fun. The stealth and investigation sections are also well done, and will feel similar to anyone who's played games from IO's Hitman series. And the game looks incredible, both in quality and design. Stunning scenery, intricate level design, and a great attention to detail. For a game simulating the real world, it looks about as good as anything else I'd put up against it. Just gorgeous. So it's just disappointing they had all this to work with and decided to bury it in quips and blue tarps.

How this game has not achieved an overwhelmingly positive on Steam I have no idea, it is by far the best story driven action games I have ever played, not only is it well designed, written and coded but it runs butter smooth. I wish every game was as fun as this one out of the box. No it's not Hitman. Yes it is everything a boy who dreamed of being Bond could wish for from a 007 game. I don my hat at thee IOI

Finally, they got Bond right Where do I even start? If you're a 007 fan, this game is a massive love letter to you. Honestly, it’s arguably the best James Bond game we’ve ever had. It’s insanely fun and fast-paced from start to finish, but it still manages to keep you hooked on a story that actually feels super relevant to what's going on in the real world right now. Let's talk about the combat. The gunplay is really solid, but the Close Quarters Combat (CQC) is where this game truly shines. I constantly found myself ditching my guns just to engage in hand-to-hand combat because it's so satisfying. You can literally feel every hit your enemy takes through the vibrations in the controller, it makes the combat feel incredibly heavy and engaging. Add in the amazing gadgets (the missile pen is the absolute GOAT), and you literally feel like you are James Bond. The spying parts deserve their own massive shoutout. Bluffing your way past guards and out of tight situations is such a good, funny feature, and it makes the game feel super interactive. The devs also clearly anticipated players doing dumb stuff, because there’s unique dialogue for almost every weird thing you try to do in the levels. The characters are written really well too. I admit I mostly just cared about Bond, but they didn't sideline the supporting cast at all; everyone got wonderful treatment. More importantly, they absolutely nail Bond himself. He has the charm, wit, confidence, and occasional recklessness you'd expect, and the humor throughout the game feels very true to the franchise without ever feeling forced What really makes this feel like a love letter to 007 fans is how well it balances espionage and action. You're gathering intel, bluffing your way through situations, using gadgets creatively, and relying on actual spycraft. It captures the fantasy of being James Bond. The villains, exotic locations, and adventures all feel authentically Bond as well, and fans will catch plenty of nods to classic films and different eras of the character. The soundtrack is the absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cherry on top. Also, the brand placements actually fit the luxurious world of James Bond and didn't feel out of place at all (Unlike Leon and his Porsche in RE9... still a goated game, but you get what I mean) Some of these complaints about the game deserve a spot right next to "too much water" in Subnautica, "too much driving" in Forza, or "too many cowboys" in Red Dead Redemption Apparently a James Bond game having stealth, gadgets, and espionage was a shocking plot twist for some people. If I had to nitpick a couple of cons: The gadgets and weapons are so cool that it genuinely hurts you can't carry everything at once in your loadout. The inventory limit makes sense for realism, but I just wanted to play with all the toys The camera can get slightly wonky if you're doing CQC in a really tight corner or hallway But honestly, these are super minor problems that don't ruin the experience at all and can easily be fixed in a sequel. It perfectly captures everything that makes the franchise great and serves it up on a fast-paced platter. Get it, grab a martini (shaken not stirred, obviously), and ENJOY!! 9.5/10

When I first saw 007 First Light I was a little sceptical because the last 007 game we got was back in 2012... and it was butchered by Activision - 007 Legends. It was terrible to say the least. Happily enough though, 007 First Light was being developed by IO Interactive, the people that work on Hitman WOA (and other Hitman games). So this was a welcome sight. Here we are in 2026, the first 007 game in 14 years and I have to say... it was a thrill ride from start to finish. This is what we want from a 007 game! I had so much fun playing this game and I can see franchise of games coming out with THIS 007 character! Below I will share my thoughts and on the game, so let's get to it! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3740263180
Thank you IO Interactive!
Before I get into my review, I just want to say thank you to IO Interactive. Why? Well, my dad is a massive 007 fan. I showed him the game when it got revealed and when he saw the "collectors edition" which comes with the Golden Gun, he didn't hesitate to buy it. No joke. He told me to go online right away and purchase the collectors edition. Now it sits in a display stand and he shows it off to all of his friends. I think my dad is over-the-moon with it and I have genuinely not seen my dad that happy for a long time. I even streamed him my game while I played it and his reactions to some parts in the game were just great! Like the laser scene where bond is trapped and almost killed, my dad was shouting "DONT WORRY, BOND ALWAYS HAS A PLAN". https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3741192723 Thank you IO Interactive!
Pros
⚫This James Bond is excellent. He's not shy, not timid, not afraid to speak his mind. He has what Bond should have. One could say he's "insufferable and immature", oh Greenway. I guess what I am trying to say is that Bond feels like Bond. Acts like what you might think Bond acts like - Cocky. He's also a little inexperienced but he's young! ⚫The story is great. Rather than rush the story onto the gameplay of - 007. We go through how Bond met MI6, then his training arc(s) to then, 007 status. The story is well thought about. At no point was I lost and not knowing "what the heck is going on". If anything, it felt like living the next major 007 movie and that's a good thing. ⚫The graphics were stunning. Locations are so well detailed. I just want to share a little image about one of my favourite moments in the story. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3740263717 ⚫The world building is also very good. You can walk around and interact with little gadgets in MI6, find little collectables from previous 007 movies. Find notes about what's going on. Interact and listen to people that all build upon the world. This isn't just some knockoff 00 game with some overpaid actor that just want's money, no.. this is well thought about and well crafted. ⚫The animations were also pretty good. They were smooth. Moving cover to cover, climbing up pipes, shimmying along walls and vaulting... all of it was done perfectly. I guess this is what happens when you have a good engine. ⚫I loved the combat gameplay, especially with how well the gadgets play out and the "bluff" mechanic. You can go all out and kill everyone or stealth around and/or not knock anyone out or knock everyone out, OR, you can bluff your way past guards, lure enemies towards you to just... walk past them, hack explosives to create distractions and other things, many other things. So, as you can see - it offers many different ways to play. ⚫The gunplay was rather fun to utilise. At first, I stealthed my way through as much as I could, and when I had to I shot back. Not only did I shoot back, when I was out of ammo I tossed my guns directly at my enemies while I ran at them like a Titan from Destiny ready to shoulder charge them into oblivion. This is how combat should be done, especially when out of ammo you'd think "HERE, TAKE MY GUN" and lob it at them, right? haha! ⚫Optimisation wise I didn't stutter, crash, have FPS issues e.t.c. The game seems to be optimised very well. Least, for me it was. I can't speak for others but for a NEW game in 2026 that's NOT crashing on MY pc... I am shocked. ⚫IO Interactive have already given us a roadmap of Year 1 content and I cannot wait, so it's safe to say that there is much more Bond to come! ⚫Once you beat the game you can do Tac Sim missions which challenge you to many different tasks. Think Hitman missions. ⚫On a final note - it has a cameo for Khaby Lame which actually made me chuckle! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3741192131
Con's/bugs
⚫I know I said I played stealth most of the time but not letting us drag a body, even just round a corner out of view is a strange move when Hitman let's you do it. ⚫I had an issue where all of my clothing on BOND would start floating upwards. Like the bottom of his shirt and jacket. A reloaded checkpoint fixed this. ⚫At times when combat happened, I got shot THROUGH some walls and some "servers" in certain locations. When the ending boss fight happens - I got shot through the wall while running. (Spoiler free but if you know, you know).
My Verdict
At the end of the day 007 First Light as a phenomenal 007 game and, to me (and my dad) the best Bond experience to date. I reckon if anyone else but IO Interactive made this, it would be a complete disaster, that's just a personal opinion. From the gadgets, the gunplay, the stealth, the collectables, the mechanics... all of it feels very Bond, all of it has clearly been fleshed out and tested in one way or another before actually being released. I want more of THIS Bond! IO Interactive - you done it. You truly revived James Bond in the gaming industry and I tip my hat to you!
9/10! 007 First Light is worthy of the title and a phenomenal run from start to finish!

Not the Bond Game I Dreamed Of
I still remember the first time seeing the teaser for Project 007 back in 2020, just as if it was yesterday. Oh how excited and happy I was to finally see a new Bond game getting developed. Now, we have the game and I had a good time with it, even though it's not my dream Bond game. It's also not without its flaws when looking at it from the developers' perspective.
Gameplay and Level Design
Bond's training parts in Malta are very well designed. Right from the beginning, the game does a great job teaching its mechanics without feeling like a cliche hollywood cutscene. Designing these parts as playable cutscenes is brilliant. Bond's game feel and controls are top notch. The light platforming sections and the melee combat are all very satisfying. The controls are responsive and everything feels polished. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3736753413 The stealth sections are very reminiscent of the new Hitman formula. They are fun, but IO should have improved and evolved the formula more. It plays and feels a lot like Hitman. The problem is that the AI is horrible. Guards don't patrol at all, they barely even turn around and look at their surroundings. They are always static looking at one angle waiting for you to get them. The level and game design is built around them being braindead. The action combat AI is quite the contrary though. They try flanking you, destroy your covers, throw explosives and put pressure on the player. The epic set-piece moments, like the airplane sequence, should have been there more. Some of the best moments in the movies are when it fully embraces the Bond fantasy. The Slovakia and Aleph levels were easily the most enjoyable parts of the game. One issue is that the first half of the game is clearly better thought out and designed than the second half. The later chapters become more repetitive and less interesting.
Story and Characters - Major Spoilers!
I like the cinematics, not the scenario. The production value is very high. The cutscenes are cinematic, the acting is excellent and the characters are performed very well. But when it comes to the writing, I am not so sure. The acting throughout the game is excellent. Characters speak with different volumes and tones depending on the situation, which is something you surprisingly don't see often in games. It's a small detail, but it adds a lot to the narrative. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3736753539 There are many problems with the scenario, but the Vietnam section is the worst. Bond causes Greenway's death purely because of his desire for revenge, even though they already had enough evidence to bring the villains down. I know this is Bond's first game in the trilogy and he is supposed to be younger, more reckless and inexperienced. But Bond can never be this stupid, especially after everything that happened in Slovakia to his friends and colleagues. I wasn't particularly invested in most of the characters either. Bond and Greenway carry the story as I enjoyed seeing his dynamic with Bond. M feels largely irrelevant to the story, both in appereance and narratively, and doesn't get much screen time. Some characters, especially Cressida, feel undercooked. She is absolutely gorgeous and could have been the perfect Bond girl, but she is horribly wasted at the very beginning after the game strangely makes you spend some substantial time with Monroe and Cressida. The villain is also horrible, which is unusual for the Bond franchise. Bond stories usually live or die by their villains, and this one simply doesn't leave any impression and feels very cringe.
Audio, Presentation and Visuals
Great intro music, just as the classic Bond style. The instrumental Bond themes also do their job well. The graphics and art direction are cool. Nothing extraordinary, but the game looks good most of the time. The game also runs well. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3736753887
Final Thoughts
The game is about 2-3 hours longer than it should be, clearly to justify the 70 USD price tag. But it harms the overall experience because the last few chapters become repetitive and start dragging. 007 First Light is a good game. I am a little disappointed because I had very high hopes for it, and I think IO could have done more to improve and evolve the formula. Still, I enjoyed my time with it. It's not the Bond game I dreamed of, but it's a solid first entry and definitely worth picking up on a sale. Looking forward to the continuation of this series with a much better experience, I hope.
