Original? No, but a nice "Namcos Assault"-Clone
I read in the some comments that people said, ASCII-ATTACK has a unique gameplay and is a great time-killer and makes a lot fun. In some of them i can agree but in the first one said, Not. ASCII Attack is a nice Clone/Copy/Rip-off/Homage (i srs dont know) from the Original Game "Assault" from Namco back in 1988. Here a gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6buBpXy6uUQ So here you can compair it with ASCII Attack now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlQ4hr5zJDg The Tank can roll, it can shot a bomb for blast damage, you control bothsides each with a stick and the Levels a "pretty liniar".
Even if its a Clone, is it worth it?
The creator might was a fan from or kids nowadays dont remember the "golden ages of arcade games" but, i must admit he did well. Even if the game concept is totally a "rip-off"/Copy/Clone/etc from Namcos "Assault",it makes nearly as fun as the original Namco Game, with some missing stuff: - I really miss some more sound-effects. Even if you drive a tank, i miss the motor noices or more "heavier explosions", like in the original. - I know its called to be "ASCII Attack" but even so, the Levels feel very liniar next to this they look really very...."blank" (got it~? Coz it plays on paper~) - I miss a "power-up" timer or like, i never see when they run out. So yea, in my opinion it is worth playing and makes really some kind of fun, it really is a good time waister and worth the price somewhat. The music is great but i miss the..."ambiance".

This game is a blatant low-budget rip-off of Namco\'s \"Assault\" arcade game. And I\'m totally okay with that. \"Assault\" was incredibly fun, and so is this. This game\'s control scheme is only \"unconventional\" if you\'ve never played an arcade twin-stick tank game. So, anybody who spent any time in an arcade between 1980 and 1995 will probably find that their muscle memory understands the control scheme before their conscious mind does. All that\'s really missing from this game is the \"aerial launch pad\" mechanic from Assault, which was both a large-scale attack and a limited-range map peek. Nudge nudge, Daisy Maze. \"Detailed graphics\" are also missing, but that\'s a testament to this type of game - the fundamental gameplay is more than enjoyable on its own merits, regardless of what arbitrary visual skin is draped over it. I feel that that\'s the true essence of \"retro\" games - the game-in-itself should be fun because of its basic structure, whether it\'s dressed in chunky pixels, 16-bit Mode-7, or HD DX12 photorealism. Or simulated ASCII text, whatever. The visuals represent the underlying game, and that\'s all they really need to do, if the game itself is solid.

I love this game! This is the first really old-school(ish) game i've played, and I really do think it's amazing. The story is good, the concept is good. Although with a controler the controls are a little finicky, it doesn't matter too much. Plus, the @om bomb name is clever. I sincerly recommend this game.

this is a pretty cool and well-done homage to the old coin-op dual-stick tank shmup, Assault. the controls are very responsive (I'm using a gamepad) and the enemies have a pretty nice variety so far. none of the times my tank's gone foom have felt cheap at all -- every one was my own fault for making an errant shot or maneuver. there's nothing super complicated here, just good old-fashioned blasty fun with a neat ASCII-art vibe.

With my limited time to game these days I am always on the lookout for a new arcadey game I can hop into for a few levels, get my fix and go on about my work. ASCII Attack scratched this itch a little too well as I found myself lost in bliss of all the ASCII booms and pew pew pews for over an hour.
Highly recommended.
ASCII Attack is a port and update of the Attanck! series of games from Xbox Live Indie Games on the Xbox 360. It's just as fun here, but with improved options - and not relying on a service that will shut down next year! Great fun and a great game.

Could be a good game if they just fixed the user interface controllers... Why make the user controls bad intentionally ? At least add in USER Assigned controls, then we can set it so we can actually play it. Otherwise: GREAT GAME ! :-D Fun to think back to GREEN BAR Paper and ASCII Art days... Terminals and Mainframe Games are so C00L ! Good Game gg

So this is a cool little tank game with an "unconvenional" control scheme, you control the tanks's tracks, left track and right track. To me, it felt very tricky, but it also started to feel less trick the longer I played. I used an Xbox 360 controller, so I can't really speak for how good the keyboard controls are, ESDF and IJKL. WASD would have made more sense instead of ESDF, but I digress. For anybody who enjoys tank combat games regardless of the game's art style, I recommend picking this one up. I only played the first few levels of "normal", so take this "review" with a grain of salt. Let the tanks march onward!
