Kid Mystic: Enchanted Edition Steam Charts & Stats

Kid Mystic never paid attention in magic school except when they were discussing fireballs, so now he's the only one who can save Tulipton in this action-packed RPG which was hailed as The Best Fantasy Role Playing Game For The PC by (checks notes...) its own box.

I cannot put into words how excited I am that this has been remastered. This was my go-to game as a kid and have many many fond memories of the soundtrack, the little quirks and sound effects, and even have the "whuu psshhh" as you fall in water at the end of a hard level burned into my psyche. I still have an original boxed copy of the eGames version so I look forward to playing the "classic" and modern versions to see what has been added. Thank you so much! I'm cool cat bad - or as I thought it was as a kid "How'd you get there?"

Another classic Hamumu game from my childhood. Already was fun, but modern mode definitely breathes some new life into it!

A remake of a great old kids' game, and the added content is awesome! The skill system really makes it into a whole new experience. And there are a couple added difficulty levels for challenge fiends.

Runs perfectly on Steam Deck. Plays like a combination of Chip's Challenge mixed with relaxing Gauntlet style combat; it's well-polished, addictive, and highly recommended. The game has aged well thanks to a well done gameplay loop. You start every level without your primary weapon/powerups, and have to first find them before you can take on enemies. From there, it's a matter of finding the orbs and other secrets until the level is fully cleared. There's good variety here--some levels give you full firepower at the start for taking on hoards/bosses, others make you play stealthily until you find your powerups, others are more puzzle focused. There's permanent progression in the form of buying gear, finding spells, and, in the modern version, leveling up your skill tree. Combat is well done. it's always reminded me of Gauntlet, but no monster spawners. Never boring, though never stressful either--generally, you can always run away, assuming you kite enemies correctly. Spells are great; Insane Rage has always been one of my favorites. This new version adds additional level up mechanics, and for the new higher difficulty, it's a welcome addition. Also, the "Die if you touch water" was removed, which is really the only thing that was genuinely frustrating in the original. It's great all versions of Kid Mystic and related options were included, as I found I did need the crunchy low-bitrate soundtrack to full enjoy the game. Repetition is the only real flaw here. It's alleviated by good level design, but the game is at its best when you clear a few levels in a session, then come back to it. Dr. Lunatic Supreme with Cheese/Steam, also by the same dev, plays very similarly. However, I've always preferred Kid Mystic's focus and progression as an RPG; Dr. Lunatic is more of a bucket o' levels. Both are good though.

Another great Hamumu classic! Kid Mystic Enchanted Edition combines three iterations of this game into one package: the original eGames release from 1999, the self-published 2004 update, and a brand new modern mode with what looks to be plenty of new content, a skill tree, and significant gameplay adjustments for those unwilling to withstand the punishments we eagerly (?) endured from playing these games back then, like touching water leading to instant death. I've only briefly touched on the modern mode so far, but I have completed Brutal Classic just now, and... at first glance, it may seem like a cheap gimmick, where enemies are fireball sponges and one bullet can eat a massive chunk of your life meter. That was kind of what I felt about the "Lunatic" difficulty in Dr. Lunatic (not a Touhou reference, sorry). However, this difficulty level was surprisingly playable and a lot of fun! It complements the game's mechanics well; the usual experience system and eqiupment shop expected of most any RPG allow players to overcome the adversary that is a one-hit death, and the harshness of the disparities between the player and monsters give stronger incentives to use more of the fairies which can be caught. In turn, monsters give you way more coins and experience; you'll probably reach level 50 before even advancing to the last chapter, so from there, special stacking items can be bought to further enhance your power. Still, unless you have played this game somewhere before, or have a deep understanding of similar Hamumu games, you're probably not going to have a good time with the brutal modes upfront, so you might want to start off with either of the normal modes. Even old school players will receive some new features to appreciate, like certain softlocks being addressed; for example, in Mush-Aid, the Mushlords you have to lure to a button now teleport to their starting point if they walk away from it, so you no longer have to reset the level. In old releases, too, you had to be careful about advancing to the next chapter if you didn't collect every spellbook, fairy bell, and Armageddon piece. Now, Farley the Ghost Bat has been introduced to prevent situations which would make it impossible to fully complete your upgrades; he can warp you to previous chapters. Kid Mystic is a prime example of how such economical design can still yield insanely high levels of gameplay quality. Funny to think it was apparently created to satiate the stubborn insistence of eGames believing no one would be willing to accept a bald protagonist, or anything that looked too weird and cheap in a chaotic era where more and more, the best games were expected to be realistic, and leverage the then untold power of 3dfx PCI cards. As it turned out, the fans proved them wrong, and Hamumu's self-publishing operations following this game would triumph. (This was when you actually had to burn, label, and mail CDs yourself.) There, he was able to adhere to his artistic vision which would fully realize the potential of Kid Mystic down the road, and that is why we still talk about this game with delight long after it had been positioned to be just another potential profit asset located in the discount section of a local Target or Wal-Mart. (Hyphen added for historic accuracy, DO NOT complain about it)

If you're into easy-to-understand and nicely scaling retro fun, you'll enjoy this game. Beat all mobs and find all secrets in each level, RPG-style level up your powers and skills, go on a trip started as an underpowered spider puncher and finishing in an overpowered warlord melting everything in his way. And looots of coins collecting, if you like getting rich, at least virtually. If you liked Dr. Lunatic from the same developer, think of this game as a great 4 worlds reskin with RPG elements, some new monsters, and a star and achievement hunting Challenge Mode! The puzzles range from trivial to quite hard to figure out, but not impossible. Achievements may be a bit unforgiving, especially if you want 100%, but they were enticing enough for me to grind them 100% in ~30 hours playtime in one week.
