“Monkey Island 2 – Le Chuck’s Revenge” is the sequel to “The Secret of Monkey Island”, released just 1 year after the legendary 1990 game. Again, you’re exploring the Caribbean in an old-school 2D point-and-click adventure of the protagonist Guybrush Threepwood with lots of riddles. The remaster is very well done, from a mouse control side much better than part 1, but the base game has a few shortcomings which in my opinion make it a bit less enjoyable than its predecessor. Additionally, you could play part 2 independently without previously going through part 1 due to only minor connections between them.
After about 7 hours play time of the Special Edition, here’s my pros/cons list:
Pros:
+ from a technical perspective even better remaster than part 1
+ great, funny start with Largo
+ much better mouse controls setup than the remaster of Monkey Island 1
+ seamlessly switch between original game graphics & sounds and remaster
+ awesome original developers audio commentary option (incl. Ron Gilbert)
+ very atmospheric level design on Scabb Island
+ amazing voice acting, especially Largo
+ soundtrack remaster very well done, including the adaptive music
+ graphics overhaul better than Monkey Island 1
+ generally speaking, overall setting and style suitable for children, except for the riddles
Cons:
- Compared to part 1, many riddles even more random, trial and error hence hard to solve
- Tough riddles not suitable for children
- Ending in catacombs feels stretched
- When inspecting items, Guybrush lamely comments many of them just with “nice” instead of describing them as he did in part 1
- Other islands level design very similar
- Soundtrack on Booty and Phatt island boring
- Missing explanation of what happened between part 1 and 2
- Apart from characters, only minor connection to part 1
- Way fever funny conversations
- Very confusing ending
- Strange mix of Star Wars quotes at the end
- Overall, less mysterious and compelling story than part 1
- Missing conclusion of what the secret of Monkey Island actually was
Conclusion:
Although visually more varied, Monkey Island 2 in my opinion has some major flaws in game as well as riddle design that makes it worse than part 1. Especially the latter in my view are much harder to solve than in its predecessor, making it a bit more frustrating. At the same time the story is less compelling and only loosely connected to part 1. Overall it’s still entertaining and good fun for everyone who likes a an old-school point-and-click adventure solving riddles.

I've played this game in 2010 and got all achievements bar the speedrun one. So I did a quick normal playthrough of the game, using plenty of hints when needed and then a speedrun.
I'm not a big fan of this game, but even less so of the remaster. There's plenty wrong with this remaster:
- No support for superultrawide, which means that text is so far to the side of the screen you can't select it (luckily you can use numbers to select topics).
- There is audio commentary, but it runs on top of the dialogue sometimes, meaning you can't follow both. Real shoddy.
- Object highlighting is included, but it's set to left + right mouse button, so you won't find it unless you know it's there.
- Same with hints, you have to press H for that. No UI option.
- A way to quickly travel to the exit of a screen with a double click would have been nice.
- I've had multiple occasions where the game would hang when changing scenes.
12/12 achievements, 2 playthroughs.

Monkey Island 2 starts incredibly strong! I was hooked from the first scene. The early puzzles and writing were excellent. But as the game progressed, the puzzle quality steadily declined, and the ending felt disappointing. I’ve never encountered a more annoying puzzle than the Monkey Ranch one, it’s baffling how anyone could call that fun. The twist ending didn’t land for me; I felt let down rather than amused. It’s still a solid game made just a year after the original (a real accomplishment), with fantastic humour and a memorable soundtrack (even with early 90s beeps and bops). But the downward slide in puzzle design and the unsatisfying conclusion keeps it from being essential to me
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge — Special Edition Notes
The Special Edition of Monkey Island 2 improves on the first remake in a lot of ways, A big plus in the Monkey Island 2 remake is how you can natively toggle the classic pixel graphics while keeping the voice acting and updated soundtrack; no mods needed! It’s a thoughtful touch that makes the experience feel complete, unlike the first remake where switching to pixel mode disables voices by default. but what really stood out to me was the remastered soundtrack. It’s fantastic, dynamic, rich, and memorable. Even after I finished the game, some of those Tunes stuck with me. Even with its pacing issues, the music really stood out to me.
