Only played this game for a little bit and I love it.
I picked it up a few nights ago and enjoyed every second of it. The ability to go from a strategy game to a First Person shooter is unique and engaging. I 100% recommend this game to anyone who loves strategy games.

Breaks my heart to leave a negative review for this unique masterpiece
However
Its entirely broken UI/HUD wise on 4k screens
i am attempting to play this on a 65'' sitting 4-5 feet away - I *cannot see the UI*.
It is kinda possible to run it either low res or with system scaling - but that again forces low res. Sad.

This game has been completely abandoned by its developers, who have only updated it every few months to advertise DLC for their other game, Ostfront, and to break more mods. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME.

Call to Arms is an ambitious real-time strategy and tactical war simulation game developed by Digitalmindsoft, blending large-scale strategic planning with granular, hands-on control of individual soldiers and vehicles. Set in a modern military conflict environment, the game offers a unique fusion of genre elements, combining base-building, resource management, and traditional RTS mechanics with the direct-control feature popularized by its spiritual predecessor, Men of War. It allows players not only to command from a top-down view but to also take control of any unit in a third-person or first-person perspective, offering unprecedented flexibility and immersion in the battlefield experience.
At its core, the gameplay of Call to Arms emphasizes tactical positioning, intelligent use of cover, and combined arms operations. Infantry units can be deployed with specific loadouts, utilize terrain features, and employ suppressive fire or flanking maneuvers to overcome enemies. Vehicles play an essential role in the combat loop as well, ranging from light reconnaissance vehicles to heavily armored tanks, each modeled with realistic damage mechanics and weapon systems. The game’s ballistic system is one of its most detailed elements: armor penetration, explosive force, and weapon range are all simulated, making positioning and tactical choices feel weighty and impactful. The ability to jump into direct control of any unit at any time adds a layer of micro-intensive gameplay that rewards skilled players and creates cinematic moments within battles.
The campaign mode provides a structured series of missions that gradually introduce players to the game’s systems, though it can feel uneven in pacing and tone. Missions range from small-scale raids and hostage rescues to full-blown military assaults involving dozens of units. AI behavior in the campaign is generally competent, especially during firefights and defensive scenarios, but can occasionally falter during pathfinding or when responding to unexpected tactics. The narrative framing of the campaign is minimal, serving more as a loose justification for the military engagements rather than a compelling storyline, but for players focused on strategy and action, this doesn’t detract significantly from the experience.
Where Call to Arms truly shines is in its multiplayer and skirmish modes. These modes showcase the game’s dynamic sandbox potential, letting players customize their loadouts, factions, and tactics in battles against human or AI opponents. Cooperative play adds another layer of depth, with players coordinating attacks, managing logistics, and sharing battlefield responsibilities in real-time. The online experience is enhanced by the game’s dedicated modding support and active community. Steam Workshop integration allows for an ever-expanding selection of user-generated content, including new maps, missions, factions, and total conversion mods that dramatically expand the game's replayability.
Graphically, Call to Arms presents a mixed bag. On one hand, the game features impressive detail in unit models, vehicles, and destructible environments. Watching a tank shell demolish a wall or seeing infantry dive for cover amid a hail of bullets adds a gritty realism to engagements. On the other hand, some animations and textures—particularly in older builds or when zoomed in too closely—can appear dated or stiff, revealing the engine’s age and limitations. Performance is generally stable on modern systems, but large battles with numerous effects and units can strain lower-end hardware. Nevertheless, the visual design complements the strategic gameplay well, with intuitive interfaces and clear visual cues that aid battlefield awareness.
The sound design contributes significantly to the game’s immersive quality. Gunfire sounds are punchy and varied, explosions are thunderous, and the ambient audio in urban and rural environments adds a layer of realism. Voice acting, while not a central focus, is serviceable, though it can sometimes fall into generic or repetitive territory. The game’s musical score is minimal, allowing the intensity of the combat sounds to take center stage, which suits the tone of the gameplay.
Despite its many strengths, Call to Arms is not without flaws. The game’s user interface can be overwhelming for new players, particularly during the early hours when learning the nuances of unit management and direct control. Tutorials exist but are not always comprehensive, and the learning curve can be steep for those unfamiliar with hybrid RTS/TPS mechanics. Additionally, while the game has made significant progress through updates and community feedback, occasional bugs and balance issues still crop up, especially in multiplayer matches or during complex scenarios with modded content.
In conclusion, Call to Arms is a bold and largely successful attempt to bridge the gap between real-time strategy and immersive tactical combat. Its deep mechanics, flexible gameplay systems, and hybrid control scheme make it stand out in a crowded genre. While some technical and design rough edges remain, especially for newcomers, the game offers immense strategic depth, a passionate modding community, and a unique take on modern warfare. For players looking for a game that lets them command armies and jump into the boots of a single soldier in the same battle, Call to Arms offers a compelling, if occasionally demanding, battlefield experience that rewards creativity, planning, and precision.

Great concept. I never thought that a hybrid of RTS & First + Third Person Shooter could work, but it does work in this game & it is quite fun actually. But boy, this game is incredibly frustrating to play. Mainly because the controls are incredibly clunky. The AI is buggy as well. The units don't respond instantly & tend to get stuck on everything. The game itself is quite hard & stuff like this just ruins the experience.
Better to get the sequel instead.
