Tex Murphy: Overseer Reviews
The client is drop-dead gorgeous. Her father is just plain dead—of an apparent suicide. She's certain he was murdered and is willing to do anything to prove it.

Best Storytelling and character development for Tex. Has great FMVs and puzzles are alright. The FMVs and story is more serious this time around (which people seem to dislike for some reason) and they've been updated to 480p(?) and don't glitch out during camera transitions.
Controls and UI have been updated to be a bit more modern, although mouse support for looking around is still not present.
Cliffhanger sucks but we have the sequel nowadays so no need to worry
Technical issues are still present though, which include FMVs not even playing, glitched textures, and crashes (not random crashes). These can all be fixed, just look on the discussions for the fixes. I've emailed and @'d Nightdive like a million times to actually fix the game but they still haven't responded.
TL;DR: Apply the patches and play the game, it's worth it.

I love Tex Murphy and was thrilled to see I could buy it again through Steam.
Unfortunately it has not been updated to play on most currant pc's Honestly if its up for sale through a modern platform like steam I'd expected it to be fully playable
I purchased the entire Tex Murphy games as a bundle and I can only just play Under a Killing Moon but not Overseer or the Pandora Directive which were two I really wanted to play again.
Just buy the NEW PC Tex game the Tesler effect but unless the others are fixed they will just have to stay a fond memory for those of us that loved it back in the day

this version of the game came with some bugs, however with alittle help from the comments worked through all of them. Tex Murphy games hold a sense of nostalgia, if youre an 80s kid you will likely enjoy this game.

this is the best of the old tex murphy adventures. I made it work on windows 10 64 bit. to do so, download ffdshow and make sure you check most of the boxes in ffdshow . especially mpeg 1 and 2 and libavoedec. the game will play well except for occasional bad outlines on doors in cabinets etc. but the actors and the cut shots are excellent. also, choose midi in audio preferences. there may be some something better than ffdshow but I did not look that way. You will not get full screen but that did not bother me. the game is long and sometimes the puzzles are hard, but that is what adventure games are all about. good luck.

It's Tex Murphy being Tex Murphy. You either like him or not. Just wish they'd used the keys to move and the mouse to look, not the other way around. Meh, still love it.

I spent almost an entire week trying to get this game to run. I tried Windows 10 and Ubuntu with every available version of Proton. Then I tried VMs running: Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, XP, 7, and Vista. I tried every possible way to install the esoteric video codec used by the game's cutscenes. I tried a "borrowed" GOG version of the game, alleged to have re-encoded cutscenes. I have never in my life tried so many ways to play an old game and ultimately fail. Either the videos won't play or it'll crash when in interaction mode. You can't seem to have both.
This game should NOT BE FOR SALE because it DOES NOT RUN 😤

Sound does not work on Windows 7 64 Bit. A "fix" on the discussion boards loads adware "vopackage.exe". Beware!
Later addition: Now the sound works, i followed a thread in the discussion board and installed some codecs. But this installed adware on my system, ... I hope, that the publisher will fix this problem. Until then "not recommended".

Game has music and graphics issues that Night Dive did not bother to fix before releasing this game (with no mention AT ALL on the store page).
I was able to fix the music issues but not the graphical ones (transparent/missing textures).
If your going to release a game on Steam you TEST IT in QA before releasing it. You don't just release it as is, without even a mention. Very bad form Night Dive. I'll think twice about buying games from you again in future after this. Lost quite a bit of respect in you.

For Windows 10 (and possibly the other windows) I got Overseer to work using K-lite codec pack then its Codek Tweak tool where I clicked on preferred splitter and choosed LAV SPLITTER for .MPEG. Finally click on PREFERRED DECODERS and choose LAV VIDEO for MPEG-2.

Recommended. Give it a try. IMPORTANT: install http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/ or you probably won't get audio.
In short, it's low-tech, a bit glitchy (quitting and restarting the game fixed a few dead-ended puzzles for me) and it inherits the lousy controls of its predecessors BUT the warm humour and story really shine through and more than make up for its age, linearity and shortcomings - you can see why this series has a cult following.
Tex is a great character - one of many - and in addition to the humour and cheese this is ALSO a genuinely interesting sci-fi mystery/detective story.
Ends on a big cliff-hanger, fortunately (finally) rectified by the excellent 2014 Tex game 'Tesla Effect'!
