The art style is super charming, and the characters are just too cute to handle!
The gameplay is relaxing, and it gives off such a warm, cozy vibe. Perfect for unwinding after a long day.

This has to be one of the hardest platformers out there to 100%.
If you loved the first game, and don't mind a sequel with a slightly different feeling while keeping the most original mechanic of the original (the "star"), AND you are not afraid of a real challenge, absolutely get this game.
It's not for everybody, but it definitely is for me.

I love this game! It is quite difficult for something that looks so cute, especially during the special challenge rooms. The boss battles are pretty interesting as well and everything just feels right. I wasn't a huge fan of the OST, even though David Wise wrote it, but honestly, its calming nature actually works wonders and keeps you from breaking your controller after failing the same spot for like 30 mins. Great for people that like precision platforming!

This is a lovely game; however, Yumetaro has some more walking (and riding) to do before he finds his way home.
I don't mind the puzzle-heavy direction of this game, and the cosmetic collectibles are a nice reward for exploring the expansive levels. However, the "immersive sim" qualities of the original game are missed. The perfect Gimmick game has not yet been made, but I think it would have elements of exploration and more attention to the environments and cultures of its inhabitants, and not only straightforward puzzle-solving. Something like ElecHead or Cave Story, where the world is explored in more detail and you adventure within it as a hostile foreigner.
I would like to see the return of the lives and points systems in some way in a future game. The infinite lives and checkpoint system of this game is just fine, but it only works because the difficulty and length of each level is higher. There's no need to complete the whole game without continuing because of this new approach to level design, which I think is a missed opportunity.
The difficulty is good. Not too hard, not too easy. I like the challenge.
The music and artwork are both quite nice, and the new ability to summon a star whenever by dispelling the old one is great. It opens up some nice puzzle elements. I also very much enjoy the cute aesthetic and little attractions of each world.
The use of world-specific buddies and mechanics instead of sub-weapons is cute. Again, the game I compare it to the most would be ElecHead. I don't want to see meta-progression in Gimmick, so I don't want to obtain permanent powerups like some kind of Metroidvania, but I like the idea of having specific levels or areas with different available abilities, like a level or section where you can choose to create stars with reversed gravity.
Okay, enough rambling. It's a good game. I very much hope there is more Gimmick in the future, but I would like the developers to change course with the game design so that each level is more of a world to explore rather than an arcade puzzle. It's cute and I like the cosmetics a lot.

Pretty underrated precision platformer. It's clear that the developers were fans of the original, there are a huge amount of references and the mechanics are very faithful. It has a different design sense compared to the first though, it's overall slower paced with more focus on exploration and light puzzles, but it does not lack challenge (some optional content is behind very precise platforming). There are also a ton of skips and shortcuts if you're into that.

I wish this was a recommend. Honestly it's not bad, and the puzzles are extremely well done, but it isn't "Gimmick!". You spend 20 minutes in the same forest going from one video-game-y platform puzzle screen to the next, solving tricky puzzles to find a bunch of ugly cosmetics.... that's not the heart of the original at all. The original, despite all of its technical limitations (and short length), managed to feel like a real adventure where you were exploring a bizarre dream-like world full of traps and strange creatures. Each room was a distinct place, and there were so many creatures that were entirely unique! The original game would do things like drop you into an area that was a tribute to a Hayao Miyazaki movie, just because the developers thought it would be a fun change of scenery for a moment. The original was a game where extra money went into having a better sound chip that allowed them to go ham with one of the best sounding soundtracks on the console, whereas this one sounds like the music was almost an afterthought, and the best songs I've heard so far were mediocre covers of songs from the original game.
So yes, it's well made, mechanically, but the soul of the original is entirely absent. It's sad to see a beloved IP return after so many years as a desiccated husk of its former self.
