Playing classic mode as it was described as the more chill experience, so I'm not sure if this complaint translates over to the modern version.
My main dislike of this game is that you will just hit an absolute WALL of progression and be forced to retire (start over with the meta progression you've accumulated).
This meta progression is obviously a system in almost every game like this out there, but I really dislike having upgrades and progression just absolutely impossible to get unless you start over. Like you literally cannot get them at all. Most games, you're allowed to continue progressing at a slower pace if you want to stretch and reach a particular goal. This game forces your hand and makes you restart periodically.
I'm really not a fan of this so far. If someone knows otherwise or thinks I'm missing something, please point it out to me in a comment.

Game should be called Magic Combat 2 as you spend 90% of your time figuring out how to beat the next boss in combat. There is no progression outside of combat - all prestige rewards come from combat stages. All challenges require beating a specific boss. If you don't like the combat in the demo, then you won't like the rest of the game imo.
It is a fun active incremental with okay progression. There are ways to play idle but I don't think those ways are very rewarding. I had fun until the end-game / challenge progression which I found annoying because it requires specific builds to complete (invalidating 95% of the items/spells in the game).
Game UI is pretty awful. Lots of scrolling. It doesn't get any better as you progress, it just gets worse. Especially the item crafting and bag screens, dozens of items that cannot be hidden - only favoured. The game froze a couple of times while I was trying to scroll where the cursor just got stuck on the screen and I couldn't do anything.

Great incremental/idle game where there are a lot of decisions you can make that will make your prestige's (retiring) feel much more unique than most incrementals that are just rushing through the same upgrades to where you were. The boss fights are like puzzles where you need to find a good gear/spell set up to beat them; build i like:
(i recommend trying the assassins baselard/assassins cloak combo for non poison immune enemies) /spoiler

I can only recommend this gem. It was fun for countless hours and one of the most addicting games i've ever played. Even tho it is not the most graphical intense game, it was still very fun because of the complexity, the freedom of choices and the story and excellent progression. I'm happy for the developer, because i think he succeed in what he tried: To make a very enjoyable game, it was a lot of fun to play! Cheers! <3

Magic Research and Magic Research 2 are among the best incremental games ever made. A great many incremental or idler games have shallow gameplay (or no gameplay), or fail to really incorporate the incremental or idler features at all and end up as production chain games with more waiting. Making the incrementalist features feel like exploration or puzzles themselves sets the best incremental games apart from the non-games and cash shop hell titles that saturate this genre. MR1 and 2 reward beating threshholds with entirely new game mechanics or synergies, and it feels like the developer genuinely understood what makes incremental games fun.

One of the most fun progression-style games that I love to play. Always fun, never a chore. Unlocking the little bonuses along the way was very fun and there was enough content here to make a really good story and game without being too overwhelming.

I've been playing a lot of these incremental games lately and this one takes the cake.
Just finished 101% completion and still have 11 NG+'s to go through. Definitely recommend this one, I got it on July 9th and have done nothing since but play it.
Super addictive, not one of those that you have to stop playing to progress either. There were moments I stepped away to wait like 5 minutes for something to finish, but beyond that I was locked in.
Honestly the depth of this game astounds me, I have no words to describe how much content is here.
The way your typical idle-game tropes are woven into both the gameplay and the story (Yes there's story here, it's pretty good too) is absolutely fantastic and intuitive.
The different classes, gear, elements, etc. all feel distinct and fresh from run to run. Although by the end you'll likely be using all of the elements at once, I did have a lot of fun along the way trying out different themed builds.
The prestige system is a gatekeeper to progress, but not in an annoying way. You quickly realize that more things can carry over than it seems at first. The further you get the more you keep and the more powerful you will be at the beginning of your next run. Levels in your chosen elements will permanently increase that element's starting level, so you're incentivized to branch out and do different runs with all the elements as your primary.
The game is really a bit of a puzzle if you boil it down. Every run, you see a new roadblock. A new boss that you struggle with, a new area with new mechanics, etc. Sometimes the answer is grind out some more power in one way or another. Sometimes, its to try a different approach. Sometimes it's to look for a new side quest. And yes, sometimes the answer is to retire and come back with your new accumulated bonuses.
The way you are drip-fed mechanics is very well done too. I don't want to spoil anything but there are a lot more things you can have at your disposal than it first appears, there are way more than just 4 elements, and some mechanics get better later. Every time it threw something new at me was a genuine pleasure.
And just when you think you've beaten the game, you check your story hints aaaand nope, there's more. It does that to you probably 5 times or more.
The only reason my playtime isn't as high as some of the other reviewers, is that as soon as I unlocked
the Time element, I abused the hell out of it.
My game was permanently running at 4x speed by the endgame, 2.5x speed for most of the early to mid-game. My research progress time was running even faster, I'm bad at math so I'm not sure by how much exactly. Essentially, I'd get about 5 minutes of research time on a 23 second cooldown, before applying the other speedboost I mentioned above, basically turning that 23 second cooldown into 7 seconds. On top of having a whole suite of gear and spells boosting research per second.
By the end, I could hit the research cap on a non-primary element in about 2 minutes, primaries level twice as fast.
I've got very good reaction time from playing other genres so I didn't even need to slow it down for boss fights. If you can't tell, time was definitely my favorite element.
I honestly couldn't recommend this enough. Buy it. Don't wait for a sale. It's 5 bucks bro, what are you broke?
This is a masterpiece.

A masterclass of the incremental genre.
It took me 100+ hours of engaging active micromanaging to get the 101% for the game. There is a lot of content and many different ways to tackle the different challenges and roadblocks as you progress through your save.
What blew me away as even after finishing "everything", which was no small feat, the game then rewards you with an optional NG+ Worlds mode to further push progression past the normal limits if you wanted even more to do.
Every mechanic you need to know about is clearly described in the games compendium with helpful tips to steer you in the right direction if you are stuck.
Magic Research 2 is much more expanded, improved and built upon game from the original Magic Research, where it is not required to play the 1st game to enjoy this one.
