Whistleblower's extremely graphic visuals and disturbing sound design will stay with you for a while.
The developers describe the content like this: This DLC may contain content not appropriate for all ages, or may not be appropriate for viewing at work: Frequent Violence or Gore, General Mature Content.
Story
You play as Waylon Park, a software engineer working for the Murkoff Corporation at Mount Massive Asylum. He's the anonymous whistleblower who sent the email to Miles Upshur, setting the main game in motion. Although Whistleblower tells the story that led to Outlast, it will actually stretch past the events of the first game to show the final chapter in Mount Massive Asylum's story.
Gameplay
Gameplay remains the same as the base game. It does however bring some new, interesting and disturbing characters/enemies, like Eddie Gluskin.
Environment & Scares
This DLC takes place before, during, and after the events of the first game, in the same asylum. Some areas are reused, but there are also new areas not shown in the base game. It offers new scares and panic in a tighter encounter design, making the game feel even more claustrophobic.
Visual Design & Sound Design
This DLC is even more disturbing and graphic than the base game, pushing some serious boundaries in horror. It contains very mature content and leans heavily into body horror, sexual violence, and psychological degradation. The extremely graphic visuals and disturbing sound design will stay with you for a while.
Constructive Criticism
Some say it reuses mechanics from the main game with no meaningful additions. But remember it’s only a DLC that shows us another side of the story. My complaint is that it’s too short!
The Verdict
Outlast: Whistleblower is just as intense, if not more intense, a horror experience as the base game, that scared me real good when it came out. It thrives on atmosphere, panic, and psychological fears. The grotesque visuals and disturbing sound effects add a lot to the immersion. It answers a lot of unanswered questions from the base game. I think I liked this DLC slightly more than the base game actually.
Rating: 8.5/10
Whistleblower Isn't Just DLC — It's the Real Nightmare Whistleblower might be a DLC, but it’s one of the most terrifying and emotionally intense horror expansions I’ve ever played. It goes deeper into the twisted world of Mount Massive, revealing horrifying truths and unforgettable characters that rival (or surpass) the main game. You don’t just return to the asylum—you’re thrown headfirst into the chaos before and during the events of Outlast. The story is more personal, darker, and disturbingly human. And yes, the new antagonist is pure nightmare fuel—maybe the scariest in the entire series. What really stood out to me was the way Whistleblower ties the story together. It’s emotional, terrifying, and absolutely relentless. If you thought the original game was intense, this DLC raises the stakes with disturbing imagery and raw survival horror at its finest. I recorded my full experience on YouTube. If you’re curious about the journey or want to watch how I survived (barely), here it is: Whistleblower Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwRYhRaYJrlWwrOTMO-qwVSKkc9Cb4Ff1 Highly recommended if you loved the base game. This DLC is crazy!!

Great addition to the main game. More screams, more gore, and a very disturbing ass scene. Mentally unwell in the best possible sense. Great DLC. ...and holy shit I love Gluskin :)

Outlast: Whistleblower is in every way, more of the same. Not a bad thing, but things do start to get stale by the time you reach both the end of the first game and make your way through this one. Even as a second playthrough, this DLC is more story, more lore, and a new protagonist who experiences the asylum's torture during the time Miles is suffering in the same place. Whistleblower shows even more of how awful Murkoff is and has it's own disgusting moments. A disturbing DLC for a disturbing game. Of course, this has a few jumpscares too but the terror from chases almost make up for it. A special character you, unfortunately, come across is pretty well-written and very unsettling, quite like a few characters in the main game. A great DLC, but one that starts to become dry after playing it back-to-back with the main game. 7.5/10.
