Excellent atmosphere and art design. All the good parts of games like Slay the Spire, with an eldritch twist.

I’m truly honored to have been part of the beta testing for Menace from the Deep. This game is absolutely incredible – the atmosphere, the storytelling, the sheer immersion! I’m still in awe of how the team managed to create such a masterpiece with limited resources. Every moment feels meticulously crafted, drawing you deeper into its haunting world. A must-play for anyone who loves truly atmospheric and well-designed experiences. Huge respect to the developer for pulling off something this amazing!

Truthfully the game is quite good and entertaining but can be made even better! I gave it a non-recommend in the hopes that the creator will read these comments. Here some of the ways to improve it; More research on source material Mythos; for example the Elder Gods are not necessarily evil, they are actually the “good” Deities in the Mythos such as Nodens, Bast, Orryx, etc... The Evil Deities are Great Old Ones and Outer Gods. Certain factions in the Mythos do not get along at all, for example Cthulhu servitors or followers war against Hasturs. So certain Mythos monsters won’t be there because they are not in line with that Deity More NPCs and/or pets (independent races) should join the user Pets/NPCs should not permanently die or be removed, they should instead be revived after the battle like other RPGs or you can pay to heal them or they can rest up too Some secrets or interesting random events would nice, like going to the Dreamlands A player should be able to choose the artifacts from storage that they can take with them in stead of being assigned, this goes for trinkets too More investigator (player characters) to chose from would be more interesting. More animations for the combat and events A lot more events along the path would make it more interesting For inspiration and ideas the creator should consider playing and researching the board game Eldritch Horror. The creators of that game thoroughly understand the Mythos and have placed a huge amount of creativity into that game

Is the story good? No. Is the voice acting good? Also no. Those aspects of the game are pretty shlocky and trite, and I have to admit I sped through most of the dialogue because the cringe factor was not insignificant. (Though I would love to read an article breaking down the gender stuff going on in here for some reason.) But that's just the wrapper, you know? People have different experiences with the game in the steam reviews, but I found the actual gameplay and gradually unlocking perks for future runs to be super addictive. The way the travel card decks work for choosing where to go next is really good, and the amount of different ability card decks for each of the three player classes gave a fun bit of variety. The fights and encounters are a lot of fun, and the
multiple run final boss is a neat way to represent how useless one person would be going up against Cthulhu
. The art direction is also fantastic - I loved the character designs of the different player classes and the monsters, but everything else really works visually as well. If you like deckbuilders that aren't too challenging, but that still have a bit of a build across runs, this is definitely not a bad game to sink some hours into!

One of my favorite Spirelike card games in a long time. It's set in Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos world, and the cosmic horror vibe works well for me. I enjoy getting ganked by nightgaunts and deep ones, and having Hastur burn me with his mind-destroying gaze. The art is pretty and although the story is pretty rudimentary, it's still fun to get to know the various weird characters and watch the painted backdrops get weirder over the course of the campaign. Like most Spirelikes, the main focus is on card combat and you deplete resources during these battles. Although there are not a huge number of different classes/builds, the ones that exist are a lot of fun to play. The Cultist has low sanity and focuses on bleeding damage. The Professor summons rats and trained crows, and uses various 1920s sci-magic devices like frost bombs and Tesla coils, and has high sanity and an "insane form" to turn into. Finally, the Detective is a classic noir character with a faithful hound, punches and guns and quirky benefits from coffee, cigarettes, and swearing. They each have six starting decks that you can unlock, each with some base cards and a few that help set the flavor, though you can find any card for that class during a run. Instead of a node-pathway map, there is a boardgame for moving around where you draw cards that represent locations. Some locations allow you to buy things, restore resources, or upgrade/delete cards, while others are fights, mini-games, or choose-an-option encounters. A twist is that each location costs some fuel to get to, and if you run out of fuel, it's another way to die. (Hey, it's America: you're dead without a car here.) You accumulate power in a few ways. First, you can collect and upgrade your cards along a tech-tree-like path, gaining experience points for the card by playing it. When you get enough points, you can power it up automatically at the end of battles. Second, there are relics like in most Spirelikes, and these provide a variety of powerful bonuses and are doled out randomly as rewards or bought in the shop. Third, between runs you advance by turning the fear your character accumulated before death into unlocks and by spending various resources accumulated on the way to create buildings that power up your heroes or unlock specific abilities for all of them. There are also a lot of different ways to die. Not only can you run out of health points, but you can also run out of sanity if you play cards that drive you mad or encounter a lot of cosmic horrors. Although you can restore sanity with a few rare cards and relics, or by paying money to get therapy at an asylum, it is easy to go mad if you are not careful. I already mentioned that you can run out of fuel for your car, and then the horrors can get you. Taken together, the game is atmospheric and fun to play, although you quickly run out of things to unlock and do. I'm about 40 hours in and I am almost done with all the achievements. It's a budget game so I definitely got my money's worth, but it left me wanting more of an endgame or maybe a full expansion. If you like Spirelike card games, though, definitely don't sleep on this.

A good fun take on the Slay the Spire format of a Roguelike Deckbuilder with some clever twists like being given a 12 day calendar the end of which you WILL encounter the big boss, but, other than that, you'll always have a choice of 3 encounters for each day leading up to that point (with the choice you made getting replaced with a new option and the 2 unchosen options remaining). Some fun extra style points come by way of each of the 3 characters having their own 8 starter decks to choose from, relics being parts of sets that, if you collect the same 3 themed relics will unlock an additional relic, and evolving cards based on how often they are used in battle (that defense card might be useless right now, but might as well play it, if you have nothing better to do at the moment, so it can level up at the end of the current encounter) and, in some cases, you can even decide how the card evolves between multiple branches.

A fairly well-made roguelike deckbuilder, well worth the asking price. The three classes are genuinely different to play, and have different decks within them to try out. Permanent improvements via your base and relics to find along the way, all fairly standard for the genre but well implemented here as well. It is not without its issues, though: - Some cards just outright suck. Sometimes so obviously so, it makes you wonder what the devs were thinking. Just one example: What is better? A 1 AP (you have 3 per turn) cost card that gives 5 defense, or a 3 AP cost card that gives 12 defense? It's so obvious that the 3AP one is horrendously overpriced it's not even funny. Unfortunately, the same is true for practically all 3AP cards. Even with a really strong effect, the opportunity cost is way too high. - While it is nice that you get multiple decks per class, you only get one set of starting artifacts per class. For the detective and cultist, those are generic enough to kind of work for all decks. But for the scientist, the artifacts only boost summons - and only one of your decks focuses on summoning. The starting artifacts should really change with the decks. - Number of party members is way too important. This game makes the same mistake here as some other games in which soloing is practically always worse. The reason simply being that each ally will reduce the chances your character gets hit while also dishing out a bit of damage. Being solo not even remotely makes up for that loss in heightened damage/defense output. This is also why the scientist is by far the best character with his summoning focus, followed by the detective who starts with a trusty dog that can be healed/defended, and then the cultist far far behind without any summons (unless you get lucky with artifacts). - The Cthulhu mythos really gets oddly tamed down here, with you fighting multiple (!!!!) elder gods each run, and usually winning. It just doesn't feel right to go toe to toe with a cosmic horror, come out on top and then move on to the next. You can win the game by letting rats gnaw Cthulhu to death. The game would've strongly benefitted thematically from not making those gods actual fightable enemies, only their servants.

Pretty good entry into the pool of games that are similar to StS. If you don't have +500h in StS and ask yourself every other card game why you don't play more StS, this might be the game for you. It has a nice cthulhu theme going in the style of darkest dungeon and overall presentation is definitely nothing you can complain about in the genre. The story mode isn't particularly amazing in story (maybe needs a full rework, tbh), but it has a decently fast progression system that makes you go from "this feels unfair" to "kinda doable to smash an elder god" in around 10-20 runs (double that, if you don't focus on resources early runs). The loop is very solid and all the game really needs is more content (events/cards/items/enemies) and maybe a few more defining features to pick it over longer established titles. Especially the card improvement feature has to feel more exciting, maybe just add more branches. Would also help with the current lack of synergy options. I would like cursed cards/branches as well. Playing more with the theme at hand. Cultist hogs it all to him-/herself. 7.5/10, with a lot of room for improvements over time.

This is a well constructed and flavorful deckbuilder. The interface is pleasant and intuitive - giving nice feedback. The information needed to play is generally easy to find. There is a lot of variety in cards and deck types. A couple small things that I think work well: The upgrades for the cards are based on use, and the way they can be upgraded is often interesting. This leads to playing cards that might not be ideal, because they can be leveled in ways you want. Rejecting cards is a privilege, when offered cards after a battle you can reject them only 5 times. This makes it so you need to actually build a deck, and sometimes work with non optimal, but often fun cards you didn't count on. Many deckbuilders are all about thinning your deck to the point of consistent winning boredom rather than dealing with swinginess that demands a variety of responses.

I'm giving 60% and very conditional recommendation, especially if you're fan of Lovecraft. Someone has already formulated it perfectly in another review - the game does everything right, except the gameplay. It has story. It has visuals. It has pretty cool concept of choosing next events from "travel decks". And, yeah, there's also the combat which is by far the least exciting (and takes most of the time). The cards are too similar and don't really synergize much, the main decision made in most turns is "do I want block, or do I just beat the enemy with all attacks I have?" There are status effects, but they... just are, not creating interesting combos that would give a feeling of progress. New cards are often actual starter cards. Upgrades are unexciting (yay, +1 damage). I'm 2.4 hours in and already... unexcited, so I'm going to see if my opinion (and verdict) changes, because I definitely want to play a few more rounds. But it's a real pity that game that looks so good and has so many good ideas is so mediocre... as a game.
