Every why has a wherefore. You are trapped, and you must escape. But is that really the goal? Centum is an unreliable narrative-driven adventure where everything may be a lie.

Playtime: 280 minutes
Immediately, Centum is engrossing, staring at a computer screen, there are notes and ciphers to solve that warn of something hidden. With all of that done, there’s only booting the “real game” left to do. Following this is a judge with rather cryptic dialogue about who you are and what you’ve done, but it doesn’t matter. How much of what you see is real is difficult to discern; nothing is to be trusted, and this leads to some strange and sometimes gruesome occurrences. As you continue through days and repeat the cycle, you’ll notice small changes, maybe try different things until you make some progress. All of this works because the cycle isn’t long, and it doesn’t feel like you lose too much by making poor choices. As more dialogue is added, the confusion expands until it begins to give way to something; what that something is may differ for everyone. There’s a clear over-arching theme, but what you get out of it will change. A variety of art styles are used, gorgeous 2d art of backgrounds and objects which blend with horrific images as they twist; cutscenes with hand-drawn drawn cleanly animated images, very simple yet extremely effective. Simple puzzles and minigames, accompanied by a minimalist yet haunting score, help tie it all together; it’s a place out of time. The game itself is a puzzle, along with the puzzles that follow. It’s poetic, confusing, and thought-provoking. It won’t work for everyone, but if it hits, it’ll keep you thinking.
★★★★☆
