In essence this isn't anything more than an RPG fishing game. There is a lot of subtle cues to the series that the characters are based off of, but as a standalone you don't really NEED to know them to play this game. The humor is there, but some parts of the game may be confusing or "annoying" if you aren't familiar with the series itself. You basically fish the WHOLE game. That is in essence, the game. You get slightly better gear over time but overall its only slightly impactful until later game. You get ITEMS and SPELLS that can be used to basically make the game easier for you, and to be honest towards the end of the game ESPECIALLY the end end boss once you get all this gear and all that its a VERY easy
The game itself is rather short, theoretically one could beat it in about five hours or so but if you want to 100% the game some of the achievements like catching all 5-star fish can be tedious, depending on your RNG or collecting up all the items in the shops. There is other issues too like spawn rates of fish and materials needed.
Outside of that the only real additional thing in the game is simply upgrading your buildings. As you UPGRADE them you get more items you can buy and that is really, about it. There is lots of "side quests" but they're pretty much all just fetch quests. In fact, you can argue the entire game is one big FETCH quest.
The game has some bosses, but only one really poses a challenge and that has a lot more to do with learning curve than an actual challenge, however it is good one so its not a bad thing to have.
Challenge wise? The game overall seems to be toned towards mostly beginners, and although that one "challenge" boss can be an issue, once you learn all the game mechanics even that one becomes rather easy.
Price-point? Ehhhh. A little high for what it is, I would say worth $10 at most so for those that just want a short fun indie game and aren't familiar with the series thats a good spot. If you ARE familiar with it, and want to see lore in a more dynamic setting paying full price might be a good idea. The DLC is rather sub-par and doesn't really add much to the game itself other than a few items that are good initially early on but later get kind of meh.
Game itself is GOOD but not GREAT, and a lot more "simple" than I expected. There is some things that could be better polished but for what it is, its about as I expected TBH.
TLDR: You fish, its good for what it is but a bit overpriced. You "level up" but the most important thing is the items/spells. You get differnet baits, and some additional things that improve your range of fishing/movement etc. but not much beyond that to say about it.
It was a nice day for fishing, but I am hoping it becomes a better day for fishing with more dynamic games from them in the future.

A rare example where a creative team adapts their media into a video game. Perhaps uniquely suited since their media is a parody of video games. But they also just made it... A good game, which is so often the hallmark of a truly great parody.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a pixel art game and humor. The creators from Viva La Dirt League have created a fantastic and humorous game and an extension to their Epic NPC Man skits on Youtube. Quirky conversations, fun fishing mechanics. Loved every moment.
Also, Rowan took the time to visit me while I was streaming this the first week it released. It was awesome to see that he and the rest really cared about others thoughs and to what could be potential improvements. I am not the best at most games, but I am glad I stuck this one out and witnessed an amazing ending. Cheers for a great game.

One of the coziest games I have played. I thought the fishing mechanic would get old, but there was enough quests / sidequests to progress to more difficult fish at a pace that was enjoyable. I did find the grind a little much at the end, but that was my own determination to get the game to 100% complete - not a fault on the game at all.
Gameplay is simplistic but challenging enough to be fun, references added to the fun factor. Genuinely enjoyed this whole game from start to finish.

Gameplay-wise, this game is nothing less and nothing more than what was advertised. People from outside the Viva La Dirt League bubble might consider this game inadequate, or tedious, but... that's just the daily grind of NPCs :)
Now, on the technical level, I'm stuck for more than a week now on the Orkish Knife quest, and quoting the Eurotrip classic: "The girl never came". Which made me feel cheated, thus resulting in a low review score.
I cannot recommend it in its current state, at least not until cripling bugs are fixed :(

I get the joke. Hope you like constant fetch quests and backtracking, cause that is literally all this game is. It gets old really damn quick. Dont pay more than a fiver if you are willing to play it; otherwise, dont waste your time. Play Dredge instead.

The game is basically a quest chase. There is no autonomy, nothing to discover, to do by yourself... The game even keeps calling which fish you mush catch all the time, it feels you are just following a script

I usually never leave reviews, good or bad, for most of the games that I play but this game felt like it warranted one. This is honestly a genuinely fantastic fishing game. I'm always on the lookout for good fishing games and have sort of developed a pretty picky taste for them, and I'd say I got TOO invested into this one from the demo.
The actual fishing battle system in this game might be one of the best and most satisfying of any fishing game I've ever played, the game itself is genuinely incredibly funny at several moments, and as a major collect-aholic this game scratched that itch incredibly hard. The only negative thing I can even think to say is that maybe some of the endgame battles go on for a relatively long amount of time but that's just digging into nitpick territory and just reaching to the maximum.
I had a ton of fun, this game is extremely satisfying to play, and I enjoyed it from start to finish, I recommend it. It was just also hilarious to see a game be made out of Baelin's Route, a video that was sent to me by a friend who did so specifically because of my love for fishing in video games, haha

As many have already pointed out, if you are thinking of buying this game, know that it is entirely a fetch quest. About 40% is walking back and forth, 50% fishing/reeling, and 10% skipping through dialog.
I bought it because I have been a fan of Epic NPC Man videos for many years, and I appreciate Viva La Dirt Leagues ability to capture moments that only gamers understand and they do so in brilliant and funny ways. The trailer for this game seemed to embody that humor and combine it with a unique fishing combat style.
Unfortunately, the humor/cleverness becomes very stale, very fast. And the fishing battle is equally boring at about the 25% completion mark. There isn't really any thought behind the equipment (just max out magic stats because that's the only way to reel in the fish), and though they tried to add skill sections with the water currents, it doesn't require more than an ounce of patience to get through. Even the side story of actually rebuilding the town falls flat as it only increases the available wares; they don't even notice you've helped them.
This has all the elements to be a unique and enjoyable short game that pokes fun at classic MMORPGs while offering a rewarding and engaging experience. Unfortunately, they didn't tie those elements together into a cohesive game structure that actually compels the gamer forward. I write this with only the final boss and a few final extras to complete, and I simply don't care enough to do it.
While I don't think they can actually save this game, they could do a couple things to make it a little better for those who already bought it:
Automatic resource collection - Don't make me press the button as I walk past
Fast reel-in with chests/crates - I can't lose them, so why make me slowly reel in?
Access to the fish list at all times - Really frustrating to have to run back to the statue to check
Shift the camera more when dropping the line - You can barely see below the lure, easy to run right into a fish you don't want to catch
