I'm a big horror fan and have been for ages so I've kind of grown numb to the majority of scares, especially in games. Outlast is one of the few I can genuinely say have scared me and it's the game that's scared me most in recent years. If you're like me and want a game to scare you despite your built-up resistance, I can wholeheartedly recommend Outlast.
The story is also excellent and the lore is super intriguing. The level design is amazing, the graphics are beautiful, the character design is superb, and there's no glitches that the casual player would notice. There's no issue with performance either. (I miss when games were actually optimized lol) For a game made over a decade ago, it holds up perfectly.
Overall, Outlast is well worth it's price- Plus, with the Whistleblower DLC you get basically two top tier games for the half the price of recent releases.

What an experience! I am not big into horror games, so I don't have a large frame of reference here, but this was one of the most tense, immersive and thoroughly entertaining games I've played in a long time. The mechanic of using your camera as night vision is absolute genius, as it forces you to use your light sparingly while also giving an incredibly immersive found footage effect. The game is perfectly paced, delicately alternating between periods of quiet dread and moments of exhilarating action. Whenever you get accustomed to a certain environment or game mechanic, things suddenly switch up and your scrambling again.
The story is interesting and vague enough to not overshadow the important part of this game: the experience itself. The combination of timeless visuals with great level design and some absolutely fantastic uses of music results in a thrilling ride from start to finish.
I have wishlisted the DLC and sequels and look forward to getting my teeth into them. First I will take some time off from the spooky games though and pat myself on the back for completing this journey.

All i understood from game was that there is an asylum works in the name of charity but gains money by torturing people in their basement, develops their own technology etc.
Long story short, i wasn't bothered to read all those documents and notes.
I just focused on enjoying jumpscares, tension, violence, drama and all the other shit.
Throughout the game, not going to lie i was expecting less crazy kind of difficulties or bosses whatever you'd call them.
Well not a bad game after all yet no need to overrate.

Still as effective over a decade later as it was when it first came out
What I love about this game compared to many other survival horrors is that the main character is ballsy, whenever Miles writes in his journal he has strong conviction, is very flippant, and actually feels like a real dude in the situations he's in. The entire game is pretty heavily supported by having great character writing, many antagonists stand as memorable even now. Some of the greatest moments in the game are when you come out of an insane cutscene and realize you have to keep going after just having watched something fucking gnarly happen to you.
On subsequent replays I also have to say there are many subtle moments inbetween the typical huge scares which permeate the game. Sometimes there might be an audio cue or interaction which I never noticed on that first playthrough because it was previously so overwhelming.
I also have to add that the whistleblower DLC for this game may be hands down one of the greatest continuations of any horror game. The character's different attitude is felt in his notes and the sort of situations he gets in compared to Miles. It manages to give greater context to the first game while not being the sole focus, admittedly the ending here is incredible and does huge justice for the original ending for Outlast.
The few complaints I would have for it though would be that sometimes its overly dramatic, and there are a lot of jumpscares which feel unwarranted or thrown in as not to have too long a moment of suspense. Some objectives/gameplay contrivances are also a bit worn out by a certain point. The "activate 2-3 things across an area with an enemy inbetween" thing certainly works, and sometimes really well (big fan of the walrider section at the end) but generally by the time Chris Walker is standing between you and some water pumps in the Male Ward I've grown tired.
One final thing to add, I love how as the game goes on you deal with things which remain until the end (Getting two fingers cut off, and seeing your bloodied stumps from then on, dropping your camera, and from there dealing with the lens being cracked, and in the very end literally being dropped tens of feet onto concrete and having to hobble)
