Really enjoyed this. It was mostly what I was expecting, but takes a bit of a turn near the end (NOT a plot twist). Felt like a really good indie movie for much of its run, like you could imagine watching a good A24 movie with this premise, following Ecuador's qualifying games of the 2001 World Cup through the eyes of a child with mixed time and a dreamlike state. The last 30 mins or so really elevated this for me, worth playing thru to the end even if you're like "ok I get it".

An interactive slice of life of a young boy during a short time of intense pride (but also economic hardship) for Ecuador. Man, I love videogames...

This game is like briefly stepping into the warm, fuzzy memories of somebody else's childhood, an enchanted vision of a place and time I've never known. The narrator himself confesses that these can't be his own memories either; that he was too young to have played in the way we see, too hemmed in by his parents to be allowed the freedom. In that way, this is a game that achieves the remarkable in making me yearn for a past that not only isn't mine, but never existed at all. Except, it is real in it's own way, in the patchwork of Ecuador's national memory stitched together with the narrator's own. "Slice-of-life" is the perfect descriptor, just as the game's description says. It's grounded & intimate, unconcerned with spectacle. It's just a glimpse into the story of a soccer-loving boy living a plausible life in 2001 Ecuador. It didn't aspire to be anything more, but it doesn't need to be to fulfill its promise. It doesn't stick around for long, but the impression it made will. You don't need to love soccer to enjoy this story, you just need to remember what it was like to be a kid again, playing in the park.

A short and charming experience. I have minimal interest in Soccer and don't have the cultural background to relate to much of what is happening, but through the unique visual presentation, beautiful soundtrack, charming interactions, and some creative ideas to integrate the gameplay with the narrative Despelote was a unique and enjoyable experience.

This is by far the best game of the year and a masterclass in videogame narrative.

It is more of a work of art than a game. It resonated with me even though I did not grow up in Latin America, let alone in Ecuador, but if you were kicking balls on the streets in the late 90's-early 2000's and grew up in a lower middle-labor class family, and on top of that, if you had your national team in world cup 2002 you will remember this game fondly after finishing it, even though it is a short experience.  I am now feeling old, sad, and nostalgic towards those times when the world had more colours, gracias Julián and the team. what a little hermosa gem, only con for me is coloring choices, which are not very eye friendly. Steam and the game insist that it is more of a controller game but I did not encounter any problems with the mouse and keyboard.
