It's a fun game, I always enjoyed this series no matter the bad things people say. its all about if you enjoy the game the way it was made to be enjoyed.

I just replayed Dark Souls 1 and loved it so I thought I'd revisit Dark Souls 2 which I didn't like and never finished. I got an hour in and am 100% in agreement with my former self. This game is terrible and a baffling downgrade from DS1. There are too many good games out there to bother spending time on this.
I may have spent 25 hours with it last time but my complaints after only 1 hour back in it are that all movement and actions feel like a floaty mess of a first pass on a college Unity project, the "Bitch there is no smart enemy placement here. This is Dark Souls 2. You're gettin jumped." meme is spot on, and the health system has fallen back into the dark ages by adopting Demon's Souls' mechanics while giving you a very slowly progressing estes flask that starts with ONE use. To be clear, you will die, lose progressively more max health until you reverse hollowing, lose all your souls, and now have less healing items to take on the challenge. If you are struggling, the game designers decided they should make the game harder.
From what I remember from my 25 hours of playtime 10 years ago, this has tons of reused bosses from DS1, enemies consistently aggro in swarms, and areas end in dead ends extremely frequently unlike how DS1 connected the map in almost all situations except the Lord Souls. Sure you can teleport between bonfires from the start but knowing how the world connects and where to go is harder meaning you have to rely on guides even more.
This is fairly universally accepted as the worst game in the series but I wouldn't listen to anybody insisting that it's still a good game.

Compared to the other From Software Souls games, Dark Souls 2 is an 8 out of 10.
Compared to every other game, it's a 10/10.

I love this game so much. From the dark tone in the lighting, to the eerie atmosphere/environments,... they are very gorgeous and offer solace to those who find comfort in darkness. Controls will feel clunky when you start playing the game, eventually you will get used to it, just like everytime you jump to a new game (Code Vein, Elden Ring,...)
So yeah, don't let people discourage you from playing it. It might not be the best, or the easiest to approach, and I definitely would't recommend it as your first soul, but well, give it a try. You might fall in love with it just like I did.
Also, according to people, the other version SOTFS is an upgrade and is superior to this version with many improvements. I haven't finished it, so I am in no position to judge. But I think vanilla is also absolutely beautiful in its own rights. So which version you want to play depends on you. Try to find advices from those who have played both.

As someone who started with Scholar of the First Sin, I really enjoyed playing through the original version after the fact. It's hard to say which version I prefer but I really appreciate that both version are still available to play.
