The signature weapons of your team from original Code Vein lore wise are just some stuff washed ashore you buy from main hub shopkeeper after collecting some shiny rocks for her. I wish it was a joke. The game could be so much better if it wasn't literally walking on CV1's corpse. What is a shame, because aside of that the game itself is really cool, and the burden system on equipment pretty innovative, even if a bit unrealised. This review is only negative because a sequel CANNOT be made like this. I guess we will see Code Vein 3's eventual future in how developed the DLC will be. It may surprise you, but Code Vein 2 has an actual merchandise campaign. What a way to find out, huh?

Code Vein 1 was great so I wanted to try this out but its so unoptimized. Runs awful.
Had to refund it.
Not recommended due to technical issues

Pretty good anime avatar maker, with a... pretty alright souls-like game attached,
Seriously though all censorship issues or whatever aside, it's like 7.5/10 there's two new weapon types, and wide open areas to explore, there's some improvements on the old system, though an issue I've noticed is my party member Josee seems to not always attack enemies with me, no idea what she's doing, sometimes she's giving us buffs, but not always, Idk maybe she found another enemy and is fighting them, good game, I slightly prefer it over the original, but that's cause you don't have masks and coats ruining your character anymore, and those scenes where you have to walk through people's memories can be kinda skipped by mashing the attack button.
Also my rig isn't very good yet I can play without really bad issues, just loading times are pretty long, and sometimes the game lags, so If you've got a similar rig and those issues would ruin your game, I'd recommend upgrading first, or maybe skipping the game until you want to upgrade.

I like the game enough that I would play a NG+ but only if...
I could partner with Iris throughout the entire game.
Overall the game is enjoyable and memorable, I recommend it. Compared to Code Vein 1, 2 has better gameplay and exploration, while 1 had the better story and characters.
The core gameplay loop and open world exploration feels great. Unlike CV1 which I needed a break from after a few hours of playing, I found CV2 easy to play all day multiple days on end. Even just riding around with your chosen companion
Iris
on the motorcycle with no destination in mind is fun.
Combat is fluid and responsive, more so than CV1, as well as more varied and with more build options.
Everything looks and sounds great. Performance for me on 1440p ultra with an RX 6700XT 12GB and i5 11600K w/ 32GB RAM was consistent at 60fps with no issues.
The game has some weak parts: Many overused assets especially the dungeon environments where a lot of story happens. Mostly forgettable bosses. The story lacks the punch of CV1's more straightforward and conventional story that hit its emotional notes well; CV2's story is more ambitious with varying results and at times feels unfinished. Some characters are underdeveloped. Many of them are just weird both in design and personality.
My biggest complaint to the point I considered NOT recommending and waited 4 months to review:
How the story handled my favorite character and favorite partner to play with - Iris. And how the game wouldn't let me partner up with her for so much of the story.
I already liked Iris' design the best before the game came out. I was even happier to find she was my favorite companion to partner with from the tutorial island onwards. I liked how different her attitude toward the player character was compared to...most of the rest of the cast.
Then, her presence in the story just stops without explanation after a certain point, and the biggest plot beats later in the game happen not only without her having a role in the cutscenes, but also without her as a companion option. Where I should have just been enjoying the ride as the story unfolded I was more often just frustrated that I wasn't with Iris. She has a solid personal story questline you can do at any time, which I enjoyed, and remember more fondly than the final arc of the game. The main story arcs could have used more of the subtlety of Iris' quests.
I hope Iris is included more in the coming expansion. At the very least just unlock all companions for all content in a NG+ so I can play through the whole game with her. If Bamco doesn't do either of those things I will be very disappointed.

I'm not sure why this game is so hated or seen as mediocre at best. Its honestly solid, maybe not worth the asking price of 70 $ but still a solid rpg. While the dialogue can be melodramatic at times i genuinely did care for a lot of the characters in this story especially josee and lou. The soundtrack is also phenomenal so it adds to the emotion when the story is trying to make you cry like a baby.

How do you completely change everything about the game's design and make it worse. UI is wordy/busy and inconvenient, weapon system and blood veil system completely scrapped and turned into an overcomplicated, separated mess. Can't even dodge properly with a roll, and adds a useless shield which negates the point of guarding/parrying with a weapon. You don't even start out with enough skills to help tell them apart or be of much use. And generally there is an invincible second after knockdowns, KO recovery etc., but here you can be mowed down mid-way from standing up. Partner turned pokeball was a stupid idea, the boss does not care to aim at them when out so what point is there.
Overworld and map looks like it's trying to appear less linear yet does not accomplish anything nor add anything to the experience. I could go on about other flaws, but why bother.
This game is unfinished, poorly made, and a disappointment.

It's a worse version of Code Vein. Almost every aspect feels worse, or like something has been removed. The combat feels more clunky and stiff, the camera is worse, the framerate is worse, and the enemies are boring and copy-pasted. They have removed many attacks from weapons, removed 4 gift slots, removed multiplayer, removed gestures, and in the last few patches, removed most boss' aggression. If you liked Code Vein, but wanted extra long cutscenes, combined with running through largely barren areas without your friends, this is the game for you.

This game is not great. Not necessarily bad, but it's got some pretty serious issues.
Negatives to get them out of the way:
The framerate is awful, tanks randomly all the time for seemingly no reason.
Crafting system is useless, doesn't add anything.
Story is okay but the time travel is extremely tedious towards the end when you have to hop around constantly. Teleporting to specific loading screens to teleport again just to buy an item from the shop. The rules of the story are also enforced randomly and inconsistently.
The dungeons are pretty lame and boring. Most are either inside the same style of metal buildings or inside of caves, there's a handful of cool ones but they are certainly not the majority. Even the final dungeon is kind of lame because it's still just an indoor metal room. Everything is just a straight line to the boss with no neat path exploration. The first game had some really beautiful and unique dungeons so this is a cataclysmic downgrade. On that note;
There are sooooooooo many repeat bosses and virtually no variety.
Outside of the 8 specific story bosses, every boss appears multiple times. Even bosses that cap off certain story arcs are repeats of generic enemies, or midbosses you've probably already seen before. The unique bosses are cool but it's very clear which are filler and which are not. It's the same issue with Elden Ring where you lose your sense of wonder after you enter your 20th cave dungeon except this game does it after your 4th optional dungeon and realize.
LASTLY ON THIS POINT:
The final two bosses of the neutral ending are repeat bosses. Thankfully, it was my first time seeing the first one (miraculously) and I thought it was the coolest fight in the game.
However............. The final boss is just....the final boss of Code Vein 1......an infamously terrible and unfun boss just directly ported. It was lame then, and slightly less lame but still very lame now. It wouldn't be so bad if not for the fact if you don't have true ending requirements the game just straight up ends a repeat boss.
Thankfully the true ending boss is cool but that also means I had to fight them twice to retrigger the ending sequence.
Good stuff:
I liked a good chunk of the characters.
Combat is still pretty good, it's just a shame that there's no unique encounters to really use it on.
Partner system was more balanced, I enjoyed getting bonuses for not having anyone help.
tl;dr
This game is needless big and is filled with copy and paste cave dungeons that end in generic enemies promoted to bosses. There's only really 9 unique bosses, but they are pretty cool, it's just that number is extremely small for the size of the game and many of the repeats are mandatory. The story is whatever but if you're just there to enjoy character moments and build making then you'll have a good time.

I really wanted to like this, but making this open world was a mistake.
Open world necessitates alot of content, alot of content that bandai namco didnt want to provide apparently.
This is half a game half a walking sim, and not a good walking sim like death stranding.
If the world was maybe half the size, this would be a better game
