I love it. It is a up to date and a easy to obtain English variant of RoTK that is not a pain to get to work. That being said it has its issues like very ignorant ones like giving the Ma family and the Gongsun Zan families tier 4 cavalry which literally turns these two into gods in combat and this also applies to Liu Biao with their tier 4 ships which is not as bad. . A good example if you end up fighting Ma Chao with his tier 4 nomadic calvary in a battle he can use his rank 2 or 3 cav ult to dang near one shot anything in the AoE that he hits which is absurd if you are like me and start near the Ma Teng family as a Zhang Lu officer or whatever cause they will reach you decently early on and obliterate you in a heart beat but its not because of skill its because they have end game units and you do not which is the dumbest thing they could have done in this game. The fix for this comes from opening up the Edit screen in the options tab and selecting all the factions in the game and removing their tech or adding tech to everyone so its fair. . I don't know why they thought it was a good idea to give anyone such massive advantages in game based on strategy. That being said that is the biggest complaint I have. The AI is not that bad once you realize it rarely comes after you or ambushes you most of the time but it you push in and accept that its not perfect the AI does fine at fighting back. Also the maps are small and the Naval fighting in this is damn near never going to happen as the water battles are so minimal that its laughable. . Also the PuK adds the chaos system which just gives random events that make the game not very realistic feeling and take away from the game itself. That being said this can also be turned down to such a point that it basically has an off button for the most part also you can adjust how powerful linked chains can be cause they can get a bit insane not just for you but the AI for instance the Sun family can get strong enough to just one shot anything cause of the the relationships built within the faction that being said this can be tuned down so its not so insanely powerful. I mention being able to change these things in the game cause despite the issues you have a lot of control in this RoTK to change how the game acts toward certain mechanics which to be fair is absolutely amazing in this game. It is RoTK 8 but its greatest benefit to you the player is the amount of control the player gets to have while adjusting the scenario settings so if you end up hating the chaos system you can literally just turn it off when you start a new scenario. Next up back in the day when you completed scenarios you would unlock hidden scenarios and or pre built chars for a new game I bring this up cause that is in this one as well there tons of scenarios in this one as well they have fictional based starts and what if scenarios like what if Dong Zhuo had one the battle of Hu Lao Gate instead of losing the battle and retreating and you can play that what if scenario start. Most of these scenarios REQUIRE you to beat the initial ones that are already in the game first however. I have loved and absolutely had a blast playing this RoTK. Its not perfect but when you get used to what is in the game and how to adjust the scenarios settings that what you want and enjoy you will have fun as well. Just dont forget to edit the factions science trees in the edit options otherwise you will have a the same problem I did where you lose just because a faction starts with T4 nomadic cav which like I said I get it from a history stand point but its stupid to add it into a strategy game where the AI will literally just run you over from the start with 0 issues.

Recommended with the caveat that it's relatively simple compared to ROTK XIII (the latest 'any officer' game in the series besides this one). It is also not a particularly difficult or challenging game on any difficulty setting. However, the Action Point system is generally compelling and good for encouraging strategic balance across personal and force development. It looks good, plays speedily, and the core gameplay loop of developing your character and relationships is compelling, especially if you start from the lower ranks. Weaknesses include overly long rote dialogs, the traditional shoddy translation, and a lack of balance, meaning you'll have to try very hard not to have much more Culture (one of the three reputation currencies) accumulation than anything else. I would recommend this particularly as someone's first ROTK game, especially if they were not familiar with the genre and were otherwise intimidated by the idea of a 'grand strategy' game like this.
