Best RTS they made in the 90s reworked with better graphics. Do not buy this assuming it is groundbreaking. It says remake. Those of us who grew up with this on disc..... Its honestly an amazing experience all over again.

It's very repetitive, every month you just do the same things. It doesn't have the nostalgia of 8 that I thought it would have. The battle system is confusing and slow, compared to the one in the original. And I don't like how the story/mission system in which you get to control events, that just makes the game too easy as you have full control over the world.

RoTK8 is the one I grew up playing on the PS2 and probably the game in the series that is still my personal favorite, even if I've come to play some of the other titles a little more since then. The original still holds up to this day and throws you into a mercurial world regardless if you're playing as an officer or a ruler. The remake does still have some of that power however it introduces the event system which seemed very promising as in the original I often went a little crazy trying to get certain things to happen not knowing if it was still possible. However due to the often complacent nature of the AI certain conditions would often be either impossible or monotonous to be able to fulfill- Cao Cao rarely if ever pushes north at the Guan Du start for example. During a start featuring the ploy from Cao Cao to trick Liu Bei into betraying Lu Bu he was not ever able to do so- Lu Bu never attacked Cao Cao and Liu Bei never took the province needed for the event to play out. This is a frustratingly frequent occurrence in my time with the game. Ideally the AI would have some weighted decision making towards making Events they're involved in happen, maybe with the ability to toggle that on/off during scenario setup. That way Events would feel more like they're happening in the world without direct input from the player or without needing to be one of the characters involved in that event. Add in more aggressive AI (again additional sliders would be fine here to keep customization options) and that would fix a lot of issues with the game feeling stale to many players I think. Ultimately I have enjoyed my time with the game despite these issues as the base formula for RoTK games is here with beautiful visuals, and the event system WHEN it works is actually really fun. Particularly when you have the option to take the story down a fictional route! But there is definitely room to improve the experience further. 3/5, buy either if you want an updated take on number 8 or wait for a sale. If I could suggest anything else to add to the game other than those changes it would be additional fictional routes for events and more events in general to keep the game varied over multiple playthroughs.
