Ok, this review seeks to highlight some major differences between this edition and other editions of RoTK (especially 13 and other editions where you play as a force).
1) Waging war, almost any hostile actions, and movement of officers/soldiers/food/gold between cities must be planned. I cannot stress this enough. You can only do the above listed actions at the start of each season (so 4 times a year max). This is unlike most other editions. Once one window closes, you have to wait until next season.
2) Compared to 13, you have less positions. In 13, the city with a Ruler/Viceroy can have an Administrator with his own crew of Advisors; this is no longer the case in 8 Remake. Moreover, 8 Remake only has ONE advisor post. So, expect to stay as a regular officer with no title for longer, especially if you start with a force with only one city.
3) As a Ruler or Administrator, you have to pay more attention to your underlings compared to 13. In 13, you can set goals for Force/Viceroyalty/City and the officers will work towards the targets set. In 8 Remake, if officers under you don't like you, they'll loaf around despite setting targets.
4) Depending on the start date, there can be relatively long periods where the lore doesn't advance. Also, money can be tight in this edition, which leads to the next point.
5) In 13, Fealty is the main stat for any city. In 8 Remake, agriculture/economy stats are more important. As such, playing as civil-orientated officers may be easier.
6) Number of soldiers increase passively per season based on Order (minimum 50). You can draft by force at start of every season at cost of 30 Order.
7) Per season, a maximum of 10 officers can volunteer to improve city attributes per city. As an Administrator and above, help your force out if you have >10 officers in your city and other cities in the force require additional manning.
Personally, I recommend the game as it scratches my RoTK RPG itch. But, for players who may not like the era, do consider the above.

As a long time player and fan of all of the PS2 ROTTK games, I will say that I think that a lot of aspects have been improve. Adding a ROTTK13-ish style relationship tracker is nice and the other QoL additions made playing the game more streamlined.
However, they replaced the duel and debate systems with one card matching game that is kind of just annoying. I far prefer the prior systems.
That being said, all-in-all, I enjoy the remake and will spend a lot of hours in it. I just miss the original duel and debate systems.

As a rm I think this is good if your considering how old this title is and its base mechanics. I played original easily 100s of hours and loved it but I am guessing most people don't remember the grind this game was if you didn't play as Ruler or Warlord. The war aspects took a back seat as the relationship freedom and choice of officers alongside what seem like crazy amount of scenarios in original. You were free to role play as you wanted and be as involved with conquering China or not.
So who is this game meant for? The hardcore Romance fan whose expectations like mine thought this was graphical update only. That being said they brought in new modern concepts that greatly chipped away the grind from old game.
The thing no one is talking about that I am more excited than actual game is how they change relationships being formed. Other games have slowly moved to having bonds help you out but after certain point it was meaningless with only a buff here and there. You had no reason to engage after maxing out relationships. Many of skills in game which was my favorite aspect in old game can be learned even if your character is not really compatible with them. You gain knowledge points more easily by staying in touch with your closest bonds. Once you max out trust you get free points based on their skills and knowledge to help out acquire more skills and then resets. So game encourages you to befriend people that make you the person you want to be whether its great fighter like Lu Bu, a general like Cao Cao, or strategists like Zhuge Liang. Its simplistic for now buts its great organic early system to want to be involved with other characters and its world beyond just build big army.
I am really hoping they don't scrap this in future titles because it has so much potential to fully flesh out what is based on novel with tons of unique characters that are fun and special in own way. Example maybe special skills and abilities only certain officers have access to. Like Zhang Jiao teaching you magic, Zhou Yu special naval attacks, or unique troops or techs that are normally region locked. So I am praying Koei looks into this more.
Not worth full price but half price is fair for those who loved ROTTK 8 or want to support company.

After playing 100 hours of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8. . .
I think just like all ROTK games. . an expansion pack is desperately needed.
I have seen the AI get smarter as I've played over the course of months. . .
But the game is just monotonous. .
I wish it were a bit more flavored and I wish the relationships meant more.
I think that I can appreciate the strategies in the game and I had fun with the game for the first 30 hours.
. . . . but overall I cannot recommend it at its full price in good conscience to anyone. . .
