I love this series, but this is by far the best game in the series--deep and complicated but not so hard as it can't be enjoyed.

It's fun once, and then never again. Not worth the AAA price tag. Wait for a price cut or a deep sale. Or go download the original PS2 version and emulate it, its the same exact game but with some "better" visuals, which isn't saying much for a game that is 90% menus and numbers.

As much as I'd love to leave a good review, I am afraid that there is a glaring issue with the AI that I believe heavily impacts my enjoyment of the game. Let's start with the good things however. The game is beautiful, the officer list is extensive, and the tales system is very unique and enjoyable and the list of scenarios is exquisite. Now onto the major issue. The war AI in my officer playthroughs has been incredibly placid and timid, even on max AI aggression settings. Both your rulers forces, and the other forces rarely seem to launch invasions upon their neighbors, and when they do. It always appears to be the same neighbor every time, until their presumed death. There were many occasions where I was lucky for my force to attempt an attack or to even be attacked more than once a year outside of my own initiative. This leads to the second part of the issue. The AI doesn't seem to move it's supplies and troops between regions, leading to arguably anemic attack attempts upon their neighbors. Defense is very powerful in this game, and it leads to completely one sided victories for the defending side after the first 2-3 years of the scenario starting. You will rarely see a successful attack from your forces, or even the other AI forces, without your explicit planning and intervention. These scenarios tend to boil down to an indefinite stalemate of the AI attempting an invasion once a year, failing, and possibly trying again the next year with the very same neighbour, and the very same province it attempted before, leaving only the player with any real agency, especially as the ruler. These very problems I have surmised are the exact and unfortunate reason why I do not currently recommend this title, and I sincerely hope these issues will be addressed in a future update, or possibly even a PUK.

As a rm I think this is good if your considering how old this title is and its base mechanics. I played original easily 100s of hours and loved it but I am guessing most people don't remember the grind this game was if you didn't play as Ruler or Warlord. The war aspects took a back seat as the relationship freedom and choice of officers alongside what seem like crazy amount of scenarios in original. You were free to role play as you wanted and be as involved with conquering China or not. So who is this game meant for? The hardcore Romance fan whose expectations like mine thought this was graphical update only. That being said they brought in new modern concepts that greatly chipped away the grind from old game. The thing no one is talking about that I am more excited than actual game is how they change relationships being formed. Other games have slowly moved to having bonds help you out but after certain point it was meaningless with only a buff here and there. You had no reason to engage after maxing out relationships. Many of skills in game which was my favorite aspect in old game can be learned even if your character is not really compatible with them. You gain knowledge points more easily by staying in touch with your closest bonds. Once you max out trust you get free points based on their skills and knowledge to help out acquire more skills and then resets. So game encourages you to befriend people that make you the person you want to be whether its great fighter like Lu Bu, a general like Cao Cao, or strategists like Zhuge Liang. Its simplistic for now buts its great organic early system to want to be involved with other characters and its world beyond just build big army. I am really hoping they don't scrap this in future titles because it has so much potential to fully flesh out what is based on novel with tons of unique characters that are fun and special in own way. Example maybe special skills and abilities only certain officers have access to. Like Zhang Jiao teaching you magic, Zhou Yu special naval attacks, or unique troops or techs that are normally region locked. So I am praying Koei looks into this more. Not worth full price but half price is fair for those who loved ROTTK 8 or want to support company.

As a long time player and fan of all of the PS2 ROTTK games, I will say that I think that a lot of aspects have been improve. Adding a ROTTK13-ish style relationship tracker is nice and the other QoL additions made playing the game more streamlined. However, they replaced the duel and debate systems with one card matching game that is kind of just annoying. I far prefer the prior systems. That being said, all-in-all, I enjoy the remake and will spend a lot of hours in it. I just miss the original duel and debate systems.

The RPG element makes gameplay kind of a slog, but they've made QOL updates that make things faster and smoother. Another concern is the limited action points during the parliament stages, but you can at least appoint an officer with the "Farsighted" trait to help with that. The only other issue I see is the deadlocks that will happen late-game, especially in walled cities. I have not yet personally experienced that, but I feel like you can still attack the cities from a different angle to break deadlocks. Overall, would recommend for ROTK/Nobunaga's Ambition fans who like roleplaying as single officers.
