A Must-Play for Movie Fans
Anyone else remember when every blockbuster used to have a tie-in game? Lion King, Spider-Man, The Matrix, X-Men you’d watch the movie, feel that post-movie hype, and then get to play a game with the same IP, the same characters, even the actors’ faces. But “space Nazis”?
The other day, my wife and I rewatched the first Iron Sky movie over dinner. It gave me the same feeling as when it first came out: the heroine is still pretty, the space battles are as hastily as ever, and once the George W. Bush spaceship drops its nuke, that’s basically it for the story.
As for the game, it’s got that classic movie tie-in flavor: you can’t pilot the main flagships unless you buy DLC, but you do get to fly all the supporting ships you saw in the movie. The main story mostly recreates the second half of the film, with the heroine’s return to the moon. In the end, the “petal Aussie ship” from the movie is still the GOAT.
Summary: If you’re a fan of Iron Sky and haven’t played the game yet, definitely giving it a try. But if you haven’t seen the movie and aren’t into space shooters, it’s probably not worth £2—even if it’s cheap, money’s still money.

Like arcade flight sims? Like futuristic spacecraft? Like killing Nazis? This game has you covered.
If you know the Iron sky movie, you'll understand the tone of the game as well, and if you haven't seen at least parts of the film, you should know it's a very tongue-in-cheek portrayal of an American pilot (the player) interacting with various political figures (film characters) and destroying hostile Nazi UFO forces ('hostile' is redundant, there's no other kind).
While piloting various futuristic spaceships derived of real modern spacecraft technology, you'll warp around the space between Earth and the Moon to engage Nazis, in a kind of linear right-to-left map; you're defending Earth at the far left of the map, while the Nazis come from the moon far right, and will try to sneak by you to make Earthfall. The overall scoring of the game is called 'Reputation' and apart from enjoying the action, the idea is to maximize the score by destroying Nazis, fulfilling side-missions, collecting salvage, and preventing allies from being destroyed and preventing successful Nazi incursions to Earth.
It's important to note ahead of time that the game doesn't allow manual save, it's all automatic every time you warp to friendly space-station. You can do this at anytime, even in the middle of a dogfight, and if you're in trouble, it's perfectly viable to escape to a friendly base, have progress saved automatically, and heal/rearm at no cost before rejoining a fight. The space-stations are also where you pick up side-missions- they get assigned to you automatically depending on when you 'check-in' and where you are in the overall campaign, so check-in regularly. before finishing the 'stages'.
A note for achievement hunters, there's a fair bit of non-responsiveness in random achievements going unrewarded despite successful completion of conditions. Know that you can always restart progress from any previous campaign 'stage' you've completed if you want to try to make an achievement pop, although I'd encourage you to prioritize enjoying the experience regardless.
As for the space-flight combat itself, get ready to use your afterburners A LOT- lots of fire comes your way, eating away your shields quick if you're too deep in a fight, or facing a Nazi saucer too big. Boosting away to dodge fire will be your go-to tactic to survive. Also for bigger enemies, get used to targeting subsystem 'elements' to take them apart piece by piece- it's often the fastest way to utterly destroy them. Another benefit is, you can harvest those subsystems for salvage and if you can't fight for much longer, destroying engines halts their advance on Earth, so you can always run away, rearm, and come back for more.
There's plenty of fun using energy and missile weapons to blow Nazis away. Some are better for certain UFOs than others though- smaller saucers can regularly outrun or out-turn your missiles and even larger ones occasionally have flares to deflect your missiles, while also being tough to gun down. Even as your weapons get better, taking advantage of saucers' soft undersides is a must in order to quickly clear the numerous enemies you'll face per squadron.
For emphasis, don't worry too much about using up your missile ammo- as long as there's a friendly ship in space with you, they'll always drop an ammo pickup to keep you fighting! You don't even have to be in a fight- just warp to a friendly ship's location, and you'll get a drop, so have fun!
Now let me tell you about the two DLC modes that I got to sample.
The Second Fleet is something like a 'horde' mode where enemies will regularly show up around Earth and now, in addition to fighting Nazis yourself, you can direct friendly spacecraft and squadrons to hold up and destroy Nazi squadrons in turn, or help you in your personal fight. In this mode, you'll also get to use ALL the playable spacecraft you got to sample in the main campaign, but you'll have to collect salvage and upgrade each of them in turn to get the power you're used to.
Meteorblitzkrieg is the one time you get to play as a Nazi UFO- it's constructed as one level where you escort zeppelins to a bombing run in Earth orbit. You have a certain amount of lives and for a certain time limit, you must survive and keep as many saucers and zeppelins alive while Earth forces swarm over to fight you. It's a fine inversion on the formula as you try you're hand at doing what the Nazis could do only once in the movie.
