Saw so many videos that looked fun, turns out its just "walk through empty map to find fucking nothing" simulator.
Decided to try a community server instead, "15 in queue: BUY OUR VIP TO SKIP!!!!" despite being less than half full according to the server list. Their mod also added a link directly to the dayzmarket on the main menu. Very sad game that should be much better than it is! Project Zomboid seems more like DayZ than DayZ does.

I'd only recommend getting it on sale and even then $35 AUD is a stretch. I love the game but way too many hackers on official and nothing being done about it

Its just great. Super immersive. Brutal yet rewarding. Tense at times and relaxing at others.
You need to find the server that works for you, and there is a lot of variety. Create your own survival objectives and adventure. Social interactions create unique moments, making every run different (benevolent or psychopathic).
Great value.

This game is really good if you like huge maps, walking, and cool social interactions when you don't immediately get attacked.

This game holds a certain kind of nostalgia coupled with self hate and abusive trauma. That being said i highly recommend playing modded but dont settle on the first server you run across make sure you find one that feels right for you.

I genuinely don't know of any other game that I enjoy or have ever enjoyed as much as DayZ.
Yes, the game has its quirks and bugs, but that doesn't detract from the fact that for the price you pay, this game provides you a never ending amount of fun.
Whether you're just taking it easy in around a campfire in the middle of the dense forest playing a survivalist type role, gunning down others in tense battles across the huge maps, or interacting with strangers at the coast. You can play this game in whatever way you want to make each run unique and fun.
Not to mention the countless community servers to give you even more varied experiences.
If you're considering buying this game and you're prepared for a pretty steep learning curve, then it will reward you time and time again.

This game completely sucks.
too many times now ive spend hours or days gathering gear to load onto a populated server looking for some PVP fun and immedietly get killed by someone using cheats. this is completely fucking buillshit and there needs to be a way to redeem a player that gets acosted, by giving them all of their fucking gear that they died with back. It's utter fucking bullshit to punish valued players by ignoring this.

After over 10 years of playing Dayz on-and-off, I have finally decided to write a review. To start, I bought Dayz for 29.99 USD in May 2014. I was 12 years-old, and now as a 22 year-old, I still play this game. When I first started, I had plenty of trouble with cheaters on official servers. I avoided talking on voice chat in fear of verbal harassment. I didn't know what anything meant, or why I kept getting sick. After enough researching online and watching videos, I began learning what to avoid and how to survive longer. The learning curve was steep, and despite dying over and over again, there was something that always brought me back to the game. Dayz is not meant to be easy, its difficulty is a huge reason why I enjoy it so much. The survival mechanics and complexity of game-play is why I fell in love with it. The biggest thing I appreciate about Dayz are the countless way you can play it; you could try and get as stacked as possible at the North West airfield, or build a base, or find randoms to play with, or play solo and track and hunt animals, or try to get a car working, or find a full NBC suit on Livonia to loot the gassed areas. Every time I start a new life, I play completely differently. Vanilla Dayz + maps has kept me fulfilled, but I've heard modded is even better.
As for the quality of the game through the years, it's like day and night. When I started in 2014, it was glitchy to the point where it would prevent me from playing. Cheaters where everywhere and I had to choose between being killed by a cheater and by playing on an empty server. In comparison to now, I haven't had a serious game glitch or encountered a cheater in years.
Sorry for the yapping, but for new people looking to get into Dayz, I truly would recommend it. As someone who paid $29.99 USD for it many years ago and another $14.99 USD for Livonia in 2019 when it came out, it has been very much worth the price. At first I was pretty disappointed that they were charging loyal players again for a new map, but the dev team actually deserves it.
The Dayz team at Bohemia has done an amazing job these past years to continue making the game better and I can't wait to see what they do next!
