Cheaper than on the site, lacks a few functions like turning on and off the buddy engine so it always runs when using engine(which slows down the engine but not so much), also some other things, you can't play it while offline, but otherwise it's good, you can import databases for example one good database that is free is Caissabase (follow instructions on how to import it into chessbase) when imported convert it to .2cbh so it can use most of the features that are offered. If the pieces cannot be seen just go to gamefiles -> Prereqs -> install ChessBaseFontSetup.

Excellent chess app. It is working great for what I need at a great price this Christmas.
It has solved the issues mentioned in previous comments:
- I changed the appearance of the board and pieces without any problem.
- I don't have any problem related to the pieces displayed on the board.
Note: functions like "Set beauty" are available, but the format of the database should be 2CBH.

This is the full version of Chessbase just without the extra databases, though you can access the full online opening database which is huge. It works great. The only limitation is you do have to be connected to Steam to use it.

Chessbase 17 Steam Review
I am a Chess player who likes to know everything I can about Chess. I mostly use free and Open-Source software to manage my Chess databases. However, because Chessbase is very popular among professional players, I wanted to try it out.
At first, I found this program confusing and wondered what I could use it for. What I found is that I could easily import any PGN database I already had. I had Caissabase and some other sources. Chessbase makes it easy to navigate imported databases and play through them. However that really wasn't something I couldn't already do with ChessX or HIARCS.
But what I discovered is that part of the experience of Chessbase comes from the fact that databases, opening books, and courses can all be purchased separately from the Chessbase store. Basically Chessbase is to Chess education what Steam is for video games. Does this justify the high cost of the Chessbase application? In my opinion it does not. However, there may be features that I don't understand yet because I am very new to using Chessbase. I will learn more and then perhaps update my review.
But regardless, Chessbase is very popular among the top Chess players and so it was worth my time to learn about this application so that I understand why it is helpful. I don't regret my purchase of Chessbase 17 but I can't help but wonder why the price is so high when free open source applications like ChessX and En-Croissant have many of the same features.

This product is useless. It doesn't come with a games database, which is fine. I was able to source one, but it took me beyond the 2 hours, which steam allows for refunds, to get it working properly. When I wanted to use the software after getting the games database running, I noticed the chess pieces would show as letters and not figurines. The drop-down box in the settings where you would change the board settings was blank. I also have Fritz 15 which works as it should. I found a fix on Chessbase's website, specifically for the missing pieces. I installed it, but after that the software crashes a short while after opening. However, the chess pieces were showing as figurines as should it have, but the software won't stop crashing. Steam refuses a refund due to exceeding the 2 hour window. Do not buy this, you will waste your money.
****Update***
After installing the Chessbase fix, the program will ask you if you want to update. Do not click "Yes" or "No", as the program will crash. Instead, click on the "Home" button and the update message will disappear. This solves the problem, but you will have to repeat it every time the program starts up.
