Novi Cube Reviews
Casual + Old-School + Roguelike = Novi Cube! Shoot dozens of projectiles at evil geometric shapes to finally satisfy that itch to kill geometric shapes that we all have since we had to calculate weird shapes and forms! Calculating areas of squares is boring! Novi Cube is fun²!

Fun, short roguelike, I love the music and the concept. It is slightly buggy and can get laggy but overall, a great buy for its cheap price!

I want this game to be good but endless mode is just stupidly broken, you never get upgrades you need to survive and I ended up doing 15 runs before giving up.

The game is basically restarting until you get the shotgun mod. No variety and depends on luck rather than skill or tactic. Most disappointing roguelite in a long time.

I don't review often, but this game is a lot of fun! It's simple, but there is a lot of replay-ability, and each run and character feel different. Looking at the steam page, and seeing so few reviews, I felt compelled to write one. I'm a game developer myself, so I know how important reviews are. (if you're reading this and play it and like this game, you should leave one too)
I'm not sure why it shows me with such little playtime, I think I was offline on accident. I've played at least 5 hours so far, and still haven't unlocked everyone. I've enjoyed it, and love the music. Great deal for just $2!

Super fun game. Bought it after seeing AngoryTom playing. For that price it is a real steal too.

It's Breakout, or more specifically Arkanoid, but it's a roguelike. And you can't move your paddle, instead you can select the angle at which you want to launch your projectile - and you don't die when the ball flies off the screen. Rather, after every round of shots the blocks that still remain creep towards you, and once they reach a big red line you lose.
As you go, you collect experience, which levels you up and gives you access to upgrades. More projectiles! Higher damage! Exploding projectiles! Shotgun shot! An extra life! There's quite a few, although not -that- many. After 2+ hours of play, I'm pretty sure I've seen everything, especially considering I have unlocked all characters.
It's alright. Once you've beaten the normal/hard mode a few times it's getting repetitive, but the path to that point is fun and exciting. I mean, the game's less than 2€, don't expect too much variation for that price.
Still - I had plenty of fun with it. There are more difficulties, but I found them get too hard way too fast, especially considering it doesn't really feel like skill matters all that much here (this is probably false, I just suck too much). Considering the price and the pleasant, bite-sized format of the game, there really is no reason not to check it out.

Novi Cube is a great idea however i just really could not have fun with this game, all of the right things are in place but the game lacks some really core quality of life that would have made this game amazing.
Your general gameplay look is basically brick breaker however you have powerful upgrades in the form of roguelike progression, it has a pretty large amount of upgrades, not perfectly balanced but for the most part in my play time it wasn't bad. The game has a meta progression outside the game, extra modes and a solid amount of things to keep you busy for a good amount of time. The game also has a good collection of achievements to go for. A downfall I noticed is the lack of unique gameplay design and freedom, I always found myself building the same game strategy which makes the game feel super boring after a few loops. I wished the upgrades offered a little more uniqueness other than being just, +projectile size, +ball count and +ball damage. I'm not sure if this is a gameplay error/bug or a design choice but the spawning in of cubes really looked awful, its like they were spawning in at 15fps they kinda stutter into shape, i'm not fully sure what this was, this could of been exclusively on my PC or something to do with my monitor Hz
The art in the game isn't really anything to get super excited about, it's there and serves the purpose but it's not really about the visuals much at all here, I just feel it lacks personality or style. The UI is also just so bland and plain, lacks zero style, would have been great if it had a custom font and icons for a clearer view. The sound design was pretty weak, the ball break sound really just comes off weak and really forgetful, the music holds up a little better however.
The performance was fine although it's quite hard to scale since the requirements are minimal. You should have no issue playing the game on any machine. As for bugs, this is where the game really disappoints me. I had weird issue with fast forwarding which i'm not fully sure if its a bug or game design choice but fast forwarding is quite succession resulted in the cubes just moving before you could even make your next turn this game the game feel super tedious as you died simple because of speeding the game up to move out of the earlier levels. I also had a couple minor weird stutters which was odd for a low requirement game.
Overall it just feels generally janky and unsatisfying, even the moment to moment gameplay didn't really bring much of a rewarding sense. I am hoping for a little more polish and maybe i'll pick it up again but with so many other games doing similar things much better i just cannot recommend this one currently. If you do think it looks fun, I would say it's definitely worth trying the game for yourself as it's not an awful game in any way or form and it is super cheap. The general idea here is genius and I really do hope it can become a solid experience. Disappointing but hopefully with time the game will get some well deserved improvements.

It's inherently satisfying brick breaker gameplay that becomes even more satisfying when you upgrade your shots to split, explode and shoot lasers in good old "level up to draft power-ups" roguelike fashion, so the whole screen becomes a firework of blocks bursting into particles.

A real rough gem, one I'd love to see reach a wider audience to increase the chances that it's polished to its potential.
The addition of VS-style builds is more addictive than I ever predicted from its unassuming store page and incredibly low price on sale. There's a definite imbalance but there are enough valid setups to prevent it becoming predictable. A little tinkering behind the scenes, particularly regarding a few useless upgrades, and there could be something special here.
As mentioned, there's a bug problem though. A recurring issue between runs was a minor headache and a few small things pop up now and then. It does appear unlikely that it will be fixed in the future so it's worth bearing in mind. All achievements seem to work perfectly (if that's your thing) and they act brilliantly in driving replay value beyond what you'd expect for the cost.
I'm not sure what game created this brick breaker sub-genre but it's so unusual to see it appear on Steam that I can only think of three others (RunningDead, holedown and the terribly named Bricks Crusher Breaker Ball). Despite relatively frequent bugs, this is easily my favourite of the small selection and well worth picking up for a quid.

I'm not sure why this game is only $2, but it's pretty fun. It's like a tougher version of Breakout that plays much more quickly. Lots of unlocks and levels and secrets. Many different strategies emerging and I haven't even played for 2 hours yet.
