I was expecting Caves of Qud, and instead I’ve received Stardew Valley. Or rather “We have Stardew Valley at home” type of game. …Personally, not a bad thing but something to point out. It’s a sandbox RPG with base management where some mechanics like cooking are deep and require an almost autistic level of care to get that perfect meal… whereas other mechanics are either “don’t bother”, “complete nonsense” and “painful to watch.” That’s, in the same order; crafting equipment, alchemy and melee combat. Yeah, as befitting the Early Access game, not every mechanic is properly implemented or implemented at all. Alchemy is literally just filling up empty bottles with puddle water to get random potions, whereas making weapons is pretty much useless because whatever you will find in a dungeon is ten times better. However the developers are rather active and upload new updates every few days, so one day we might see a proper alchemy. And Lafrontier, if you’re reading this, adding something like an enchantment table from minecraft would be amazing for making our own equipment actually useful. As it stands, the main gameplay loop is decent enough and there’s already endgame content to challenge yourself. So even if you buy it now, there’s plenty of things to do.

Elin from what I hear has been frequently compared to bg3 or roguelikes. Elin is none of those things. I would consider Elin more like Stardew Valley but with more base building and random things killing you. It has similar vibes where there's always something you can push towards, be it trying to max the stats of your waifu, get the resources to build the perfect base, see how far you can go killing monsters, or whatever you decide to do. Overall an addictive experience, despite it's rough edges. First experience, kinda rough. You are plopped down in the middle of nowhere but all you know is that you must [strike] kill [/strike] survive. I kinda like the gruff feeling this has where you have little information but you must make do. However I think this makes the initial on-boarding a horrible experience as you do not know where to get basic resources like "big leaf". I would recommend that in a future update the beginner phase has more quests which incentivises base building such before sending you off to Puppy's Cave. As it is currently, it only incentivises playing with a wiki open. An alternative is to have conversations with informers have a chance to unlock "wiki" pages in the journal. I would also suggest making more appropriate quest objectives according to your level/depth. I would suggest making quest objectives pull from a list of "discovered" items. You only get to wyvern slaying quests to appear only after you have actually killed one, or asked to make a cake only after you managed to get one (either from crafting or bought from a shop), similar to how escort/delivery quests only send you to places you have been to previously.

This is a horrible game if you want to have a life. There is just so much you can do and see that after 200 hours I am still discovering new things. This game has a steep learning curve, so expect to die a lot early on. It is a grind fest and the 30-40 crafting stations can be intimidating at first, but the amount of things you can do and complexity of the base building/crafting is where this game really shines.

Still learning the game and apparently still near the start of the game and it can be fairly difficult with how much there is.. but I'm having fun. This game is very good at making you forget about the time. 1 thing I'd love to know though; how can I stop fuckers from destroying my backpacks?!

Really fun once you start grasping how all the systems work and interact with each other, which seems to be a must in order to make progress. Kinda reminds me of an alternative dwarf fortress adventure mode with classic grindy japanese style mechanics and with a strong focus on base management, exploration and deep team composition crafting. The game barely holds your hand beyond tutorials and FAQ, which is great, to be honest. Having a blast so far. I hope they'll eventually sort out the incoherence between sprites, character art and traits, it's the only thing currently bothering me a bit (seeing a 11yo kid with a thick dwarf beard or what seems to be a male soldier actually being a 75yo granny in disguise). Other than that, really fun, I can see the game being great in the long future, has a lot of potential. Also appreciate the translations, even if they are AI based, not many japanese games offer them. ゲームは本当に楽しいです!これからも頑張ってください!

This is officially part of my "cognito hazard" folder of games I cannot play without ruining my life obsessing over, along with Dwarf Fortress, Factorio, Amazing Cultivation Simulator. Do not buy this game. You have people in your life that care for you, and you WILL be ignoring them to dump 80 hours into watering seeds at the bottom of Vernis Mine until your farming levels up

Incredible game. Its the only one of these games where people would say "you really don't *HAVE* to fight anyone" and then it turns out in this one you actually don't need to fight anyone to have a good time. I spent the whole time playing as a bard, travelling from town to town, playing terrible music in the hopes that someone would pay me any type of money so i could get out of crippling debt, only to eventually get killed because someone threw a particularly sharp rock directly at my head because I was so shit at playing the lute. It was a great time.
