After about 20 hours, both in the alpha randomized part and the actual game, I feel confident I can make a pretty full review. But I am not going to, I am just going to tell you to buy it. Because it is fun, and the dev is working very hard to improve it constantly, and the potential is massive! Ok I will give a mini-review though. Graphics are good enough on characters not to detract in any way for me, and with some of the character parts and sprites looking quite good. The world is in a pretty simple state currently, but what is in the game looks great; Japanese, Byzantine, Arab-Moorish, medieval European on the other side of Europe. The cities and towns look great. The sound and music go from ok and doing the job, up to absolutely awesome. The music in the south, in particular, is fantastic. The combat system plays like Final Fantasy 12, with a larger party, and some MMORPG mechanics like threat control. It is pretty simple at the top level, get more points, open new skills on a board, get better stats from it. But then you get to the mix and match of class changing, of building a set of tactics for each character, of summoning a pet and giving out buffs and slapping a debuff from character X that increases the damage of character Y and Z. Having characters A and B target this kind of enemy, which their weapons and skills specialize at defeating. Enemy is weak against this element, you use one of those two classes, or this buff on another class. The randomized dungeon mechanic, and enemy groups, things to make the maps feel a bit more alive could use some work, but those sorts of things usually come at the end of early access. Because at this point, there is pretty much no story, just prologues for each character. None of the story setups are insufferable characters or extremely dull, like certain other RPGs (cough cough 90% of them), and certainly give a tone that we are going to get into a story with some philosophy and dark themes, some adventure and loss, and more interesting characters. Honestly, as of now, the game is good, it is fun, I've enjoyed it a lot. Not a ton there yet, but all of the things that make a game actually WORK are in, and now the dev is on to finishing out the world and story. The potential I see for the game is absolutely huge. If you like FF12's combat, or FF5's job system, or anything similar, definitely give it a try. Or if you just want to support a dev who cares deeply about making a good game, as evidenced by his readiness to fix problems quickly and consider ideas and criticisms openly, give it a buy.
