This one goes along with the Old School GameBoy experience. So if that is what you are looking for then give this one a try.

I kinda like this game but I really don't like the price tag (I'm on the fence about recommending or not). I simply think there are better competitors for lower prices. Pokemon Infinite Fusion for example is free (kinda overkill with the comparison but $20 is ridiculous)

As much as I liked my experience with the game, I can't recommend it to other players. My main reason is that the game advertises itself as complete and yes the game story is complete and many updates are still (probably) coming, but there are so many areas and features that are unused (or even yet, under construction) that it feels like the game is lying on how complete it is. There are some other aspects/design decisions along with some bugs that I could add to my negativity to the game, but I'd prefer to warn people that this isn't yet the hidden gem they might be looking for at this price.

At full price I can't recommend it. It's extremely close to Pokemon, with the exception only of typing, most of which isn't explained at all so I found it actually pretty hard to grasp it all, and some types are balanced seemingly very different from others (one type has four weaknesses; one has two, which are hard to obtain early game). There's a system to switch out your mon without a PC, but ... it's only usable in towns anyway; in that regard there's honestly very few QOL improvements from Pokemon? That seems odd to me ... Seems like even the "Team Rocket" style enemies will be a thing. You can immediately re-battle NPCs and have the choice whether to battle most of them, but the only benefit I'd see to that would be for the much-necessitated grind. The story is seemingly more mature and dark, but I can't speak to that extensively from my gameplay. The color palettes are nice, and there are several options. They all kind of hurt my eyes but that was something I could get used to. It's not a BAD game at all, and the developers seem to genuinely care. If you like more of a challenge/grind to succeed than Pokemon is providing, too, it's better for that -- like old school Pokemon. For me I actually prefer to have difficulty be more configurable and there's really nothing for that, only grinding with very old school style limited EXP Share ... this kind of old school game, not fully complete and for a $20 price tag, just isn't something I can fully recommend. I may or may not have "played" this game after I fell asleep with it open, so bear in mind this is more of a 3 hour gameplay review than a 6 hour review.

More of feedback for the game than a traditional review. If you want more GBC Pokemon, this has it. But in some ways it feels like an updated version and others like a downgrade. 1. The game really only has one resolution. That's fine, but since I have an ultrawide monitor if I go fullscreen it stretches the game. 2. The music is ok, but feels even more simple than it needs to be. Most of the time it sounds like 1 voice instead of 3 on GBC. The "piano" mode is bugged though. It plays the songs as a Piano midi instead, but for me it was overlapping the songs which sounded bad. 3. The game plays pretty slow. As someone who set text speed to fast and disabled battle animations in Pokemon, things just take too long. Even with the fast forward it takes too long. 4. The game has bugs. I selected my attack, the other dokimon killed mine before I got to attack, I sent in my replacement, and my dead Dokimon still attacked... from the grave I guess. Also had full battles where the other Dokimon team only used stat adjustments, no attacks. 5. Game has typos, at least in English. Guy in the first tower who heals you says you are a "Solider" instead of a Soldier. Also, why is the Save option called "Saving"? 6. Battle animations are pretty weak and boring so far. They also cheaped out and use the same artwork pose on your Dokimon and the one you are attacking. So they are both facing you while they are fighting. Looks cheap. Also the background is sometimes the same colors as the Dokimon which hides the detail in the designs. This is in 30 mins with the game so I'm sure I will find more. Hopefully they can be addressed. Probably a 6/10 so far but could be at least an 8/10 with these fixes.

MIXED - Expect bugs and things to not make sense. In all honesty this was a fun and relatively short game with fun monster designs and the story was okay. Its relatively short and sweet, but also needs far more love and attention to be a full game. This is a very disorganised review, sorry readers. Some type match ups just never make sense, and the multi battles are very glitchy. I often would end up only being able to target one mon at a time because it would rarely actually hit the mon i selected and just default to the left most Mon. On top of that for being released as a completed game, alot of the features are unavailable, and definitely by late game most buildings are purely aesthetic. The difficulty curve is just wild and by late game trying to grind up beyond mid 30's just takes too long. I did my best to "catch em all" and by late game i honestly just had to brute force the later battles/ending with a team of 30's (27-34), because damage scaling was just inconsistent and alot came down to luck or spamming flinching moves. Enemy move sets are fixed either for trainers, as i had times i would go into a fight and a mon would have all non damaging moves, but in a refight the move set for the same mon was completely different. After completing the whole game, it delivers text stating there is more content and secrets, but from what i can tell most of it just isnt there or available yet. There is an incomplete town with nothing in it, even though an npc mentions side quests and such. I have talked to just about every npc i have come across as well and whatever side quests there might be dont really do much of anything: lost dokimon i cant find its owner so i just own it now, apparently you can sell certain items based on description but there is no sell mechanic in any shop, A mechanic supposedly should have a better surf item but that isnt even done after getting all "badges", Fly is also never unlocked even if you do its respective elite ranger fight. There are a few random bugs as well where some things just cannot be interacted with or reached at point blank range, sometimes trying to capture mons crashes the game. Items just have flavor text descriptions rather than stating what they actually do. and alot of the gameplay is just going in a general direction and more or less just figuring it out while the plot happens around you in a very arbitrary fashion. Even the friend/rival characters only show up at one point in the story making them feel like they are just a passing thought. I want to say this game needs alot more work and should still be labelled as an early access project rather than a finished game.

Game is so unbalanced, I got my Dokimon at level 45 before getting my first badge. Just because the AI gets stronger doesn't mean they'll win every time, trainers are pretty dumb. Why can't I view my Dokimon's stats in the PC and all the other stuff? This game ain't worth 20 dollars to be honest...

No key rebinding for keyboard and dev has been made aware this is an issue in the forum previously and has declined to provide it. Given how terrible the native keybindings are, the game is unpleasant to play imo.

Playing the first few hours really took me back to my childhood playing pokemon for the first time. All of the dokimon designs are unique and captivating, I've got no clue what any of the types are or which dokimon I should use and the pixel graphics fill my heart with a sense of wonder and nostalgia. I am a firm believer that new gen pokemon games lost their charm when the 2D sprites turned to 3D models and Dokimon: Quest is a well crafted love letter to what I consider the golden age of pokemon. Will it take some time to learn the unique mechanics of this game? Yes, but if you're looking for a fresh gen 2/gen 3 pokemon experience this game will absolutely tickle your fancy. Wait for a sale if you're not sure (which is what I did) and you won't be disappointed.

TDLR: No, don't buy this even on a discount. There are plenty of better options. (Temtem/Coromon/Nexomon/Pokemon Fan made games/etc) I struggle to think of a single thing I liked about the game. The art style probably. (As in I like the art style) Even though I haven't played it much; "Moonstone Island" has a better gameplay than this game. (All the above are monster catching games) The story is garbage. Super simple story that goes all over the place. And the kicker is
"to be continued" at the end when you finally get your childhood friend back. Your friends also just stay in your room forever going forward.
The ending is far from being satisfying. The game overall feels like a tech demo which probably isn't that far off from the truth since the developer made this game to advertise their game engine to make pokemon like games. Which isn't that bad of a thing. But I bought the game expecting a more flushed out game. There are no death/sending out sounds (unique to the monster being sent out). Only like less than a dozen different move type animations. Everything bobs up and down. That's the main animation used in the game. Moving up and down. You'll back track an ungodly amount trying to see if anything is new after advancing the story. Which is already bad but with how the objects (trees, shrubs, etc) are placed around the map... You'll miss a few things at times. For example I missed getting the fairy stuff. Starting with the stone. Then I got the fire fairy. And I did all that in order to get to the 'north' of aki's shrine since the last quest before I quite the game said something along the lines of "A new portal has opened up there" But it turns out I need to unlock three other fairies? Great. No idea where to start looking for them (back tracking). The way you unlock items to progress the game (like destroying to different types of logs or a stone) is pretty random... Leveling also sucked. Once I got to the last step in the game (the point of no return type) I was trying to level my party to 40 but all the normal monsters that I could farm off of were either 20-34. You can re-challenge trainers to fight them for exp or money (You can only get money this way) which I found to be the better option for grinding. Either way I thought leveling was slow. Palworld leveling felt way faster than this game. (default settings). Yeah, "tech demo" sums it up the best.
