This is proving to be an incredible game. You have to use strategy. You have to make decisions. Your decisions affect the lives of your soldiers. Each soldier has a family. It gets intense as you get deeper. There are consequences with other countries if you make bad decisions. This game is real!

It has the right amount of difficulty and ease to play. With the better graphics today, it plays a lot easier than in the past.

A solid turn based combat loop with a Sci-fi theme and linear unlock/upgrade path, along with some resource management. This was my first entry into the series - but I get a sense it doesn’t really matter - maybe there was a story here - but it wasn’t a strong emphasis. You’ll inevitably have your favorite characters - but that isn’t driven by anything but yourself and your preferences. A play through of this took me a while - and it was nice to have this to fall back on for times I just wanted some combat between breaks from other games. Probably not worth another play through - but will certainly keep an eye out for sales on others in the series if the experience is similar.

No reason to buy this game if you have XCOM 2. I'm actually surprised it looks almost the same, just different engine and ui tweaks.

A visionary triumph that revived turn-based strategy as a mainstream genre. More than a decade later, this game has become its own classic, nearly as far from it's own release as the 1994 title it rebooted. The design, presentation and polish of this game has made it eternal. There's no world where this game loses its shine. Try it first in vanilla, then play its other half, the Long War mod which elevates this game to being the single greatest turn-based squad strategy experience ever played. This game is timeless, even when pitted against its own sequel or anything else. Nothing can compare to how easy this game is to pick up, and how satisfying and hard it is to truly master, and all running easily out of the box with no sprawling modlists or other headaches to worry about to make it shine. Thanks Firaxis for an incredible game that changed everything. We're lucky this game was made.

I strongly recommend this game. I gave X-Com a few tries over the years and this happened to be the year where everything clicked in my brain. The biggest piece of advice for new players is to save scum. If the game didn't want you to reload saves, it will put on iron man mode by default. It also ran great on my Steam Deck. It crashed a few times when I played with the Enemy Within DLC, but it stopped after I went to compatibility settings and change the compatibility layer to Proton 7.0-6.

Really great for the time it was made. I love the _idea_ of the original XCOM and my hours would be much higher if the Long War hours had counted. Sadly, I think the game is let down by the "Chance to hit" mechanics. Game devs have come up with much cooler ways to create gameplay moments than pure RNG in strategic games and it makes going back to XCOM feel like a slog sometimes.
Doesn't work on win11
Can't run the game on Win11 24H2, I read you can run it with GOG version or do DLL injections/replacing if you are willing to waste your time and not break your system just to play a game? Amazing devs why just spend 1 day to fix the game?

Trash publisher 2k updated the TOS to access and process unnecessary data, on your PC that the game is installed on, that doesn't improve the game at all. Obviously they sell it to 3rd parties and god knows do whatever else with the data. I would advise uninstalling and not purchasing or supporting anything that 2k is involved with until this garbage tier TOS is removed or changed. Steam should remove this intrusive literal spyware off the store and a class action lawsuit should be in order because most of us purchased the game before this new, surrender you're soul to 2k TOS was in effect.

I originally loved this game but due to the updated 2k terms of service that allows them to apply Kernal level spyware I must give this a negative review.
