Button remapping isnt 100%. I can remap in-game controls, but i dont have the option to change the select or back button (enter and del respectively). So when i tried to return to the game menu, i couldnt use any mapped buttons, i had to use a keyboard (im playing on an arcade cabinet so you can understand my frustration). This was the same for clearing levels, you have to choose which mission is next, and i couldnt even do that. The game itself is just okay, the original arcade game is far better, and im also not liking the small sized characters on-screen. its very cartoonish, and doesnt blend well to a beat em up. i feel the devs wanted to copy the tmnt setup and its just not what a dd player wants.

Certain bosses cant be hit by all characters so the game kind of forces you to pick the character they want instead.

Nostalgia hits hard with Double Dragon Gaiden. Fans of the classic Beat 'Em Up franchise will feel right at home with Arc System's newest spin on the Lee Brothers saga. - Classic enemies: ------------------------- On top of the slew of new opponents the Lee brothers must contend with, many memorable foes from past Double Dragon games also make appearances throughout Gaiden. Iconic adversaries like Abobo, Burnov, Big Boss Willy, and even final boss Duke from Super Double Dragon are just a handful of the recognisable faces encountered in Gaiden's various modes. Progressing in Story or Survival modes grants players tokens, which can be used to unlock these additional characters for use in Gaiden's various modes; adding incentive and replay value for repeat playthroughs. - Music: ----------- Arguably one of the best features of Gaiden is the game's selection of music. Every track is a newly-composed rendition of classic iconic themes from past Dragon titles. Classics like the original Dragon arcade opening, Abobo's lair/Mission 4, and even an amazingly fleshed out arrangement of Super Double Dragon's Mission 1/Las Vegas theme. Adding a comprehensive touch, there's also new takes on tracks found in the recently-released Double Dragon IV. -Graphics: -------------- Glancing through other reviews, some players aren't fond of Gaiden's art style. To me, the super-deformed, cartoonish look of Gaiden seems reminiscent of Double Dragon's lesser-known 16-bit 90's spinoff: Combatribes. Characters are expressive, animated, and drawn as if they just leaped off of a Saturday morning cartoon show. It's an interesting twist from a developer who's mostly-gravitated to releasing titles from the franchise using the visuals from Double Dragon titles released twenty to thirty years ago. Gameplay: -------------- Far from a typical button masher, Double Dragon Gaiden implements a level of strategy rarely-seen in a Double Dragon title. Special moves are activated with the use of an energy bar. When the bar is filled, players can unleash a character's special moves or special chain combos. Once the move has been activated, the player's energy bar is momentarily depleted. When swarmed with larger groups of enemies, or facing the end-level bosses, players will have to be mindful of their energy bar; picking the right time to perform their special moves or combos. Take out three or more enemies with a special combo and players are rewarded with food items to help restore their health; adding a level of strategy need to win each fight. When fully-charged, players can also use a special tag feature to switch out characters when their energy is running low. In two player co-op, the tag feature allows up to four separate characters to be controlled in Gaiden's modes. Replay value: ------------------ By collecting tokens via Story or Survival modes, players can use tokens to purchase extra characters, stages, music tracks and even official artwork. To break up the monotony, players are allowed to choose different paths in story mode with each playthrough. Changing the order of which boss is faced at the end of mission 4 creates new challenges players must deal with before facing the final boss. For example, choosing to face boss character Anubis on stages 1 to 3 will present Anubis in his regular form. Choose to face Anubis at the end of Stage 4 however, and Anubis's pyramid will contain a plethora of new booby traps before a showdown with Anubis in a giant, transformed state is activated! It's incentives like these that make players want to challenge each boss at the end of mission 4 - replaying through story mode multiple times in the process. Pros: -------- - Combo-driven battle system that rewards players for strategic thinking. - Lots of throwbacks to the classic Double Dragon games. - Familiar enemies and bosses from past Dragon titles. - Tag Team features adding a new dynamic to playthroughs. - Online Co-op capability. - Unlockable characters, artwork, levels, and music tracks. - Energetic soundtrack featuring redone level themes from throughout the series. - Multiple challenges, outcomes, and an alternate ending with repeat playthroughs Cons: -------- - The cartoonish art style may not appeal to everyone. - Versus mode does not offer Player vs COM match types.
Short But Good Fun When Playing Co-Op
I bought this game primarily to play it as co-op with my cousin, which we did today and finished it in less than 2 hours.
Main Positives:
- AWESOME stage music throughout the story campaign. - The art style, while chibi, is still nice overall.
Main Negatives:
- Characters moves VERY SLOW overall (especially when moving upwards/downwards). - Combat is not very smooth and it was very hard to do a melee+special combo (kept mashing basic attacks mostly). - Very short story campaign.
Conclusion:
- I would recommend it if you are playing co-op/multiplayer (doesn't seem fun as a "singleplayer" game). - Given how short the story mode is, buy it when on major sale. Final Rating: 7.5/10.

TL;DR: this game is a unique and fun spin on the beat 'em up genre, combining elements of roguelikes with a charming pixel art and amazing soundtrack.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons captures all that old-school vibe of the arcade beat 'em ups. The game is pretty challenging and has a fun unlock system where each run is rewarding, giving you some sense of progress. A nice twist is that you play as two characters in a tag-system, which adds an extra layer of complexion to the combat; you can have a combo-heavy single-target specialist and a area-of-effect powerhouse to balance out encounters. The game has a huge emphasis on special attacks and encourages players to use them frequently. Unlike other titles like Streets of Rage and Final Fight, special attacks don't consume health, and instead have a dedicated gauge that fills up slowly over-time; defeating enemies drops blue crystals that also recover the gauge. Scoring +3 enemy takedowns with special attacks will award a large sum of money on top of food items dropping. This simple gameplay loop is incredibly addicting and rewarding, compared to other games where you need to hunt down recovery items. The roguelike portion of the game is that you earn money by defeating enemies, and at the end of each stage you can buy perks that provide boons for the run. Whether you beat the game or not, all your excess money is converted into tokens, a special currency used to unlock new characters, concept art and music. Prior to starting a Story Mode run, there are difficulty modifiers for character health, perk cost and enemy aggression that affect the conversion ratio of your money into tokens; higher modifiers makes the game harder but reduces the ratio, meaning more tokens.

Strengths
✅ Characters feel very distinct from each other, with different special moves and playstyles. ✅ Satisfying gameplay loop and character unlocking. Yes, UNLOCKING, like in the old days where you'd get stuff by just playing the game. You can even unlock all the bosses as playable characters. And all future DLC characters are 100% FREE. ✅ Easy to grasp but hard to master; while simple, there are frame cancels to make combat more fluid. When a character's gameplay clicks it's super satisfying, especially when you get certain perks in the shop. ✅ Hitboxes are very generous and will hit easily in the Z-axis compared to other beat 'em ups where you need more precision. However this also counts for enemies. ✅ The game has a two-player co-op, but local and online. I've been interested in this game for a long time but at launch it didn't have online co-op, and now it does. ✅ The game features a Story Mode (campaign), an (endless) Survival Mode and a Versus Mode, all that can be played alone or with a second player. ✅ The art direction, animations and soundtrack are all great. This game even has voice acting, which caught me offguard. Really good stuff!
Weaknesses & Feedback
❌ Gameplay feels a bit sluggish compared to other beat 'em ups. Input buffer is a bit janky and there are many moves with high endlag that you have to commit to and cannot be frame cancelled. ❌ Movesets are a bit too simple, with no universal grab or charging normal attacks. There are some attacks that hit off-the-ground and some decent potential juggling, though. Streets of Rage 4 really spoiled me in this department; I also wish enemies bounced off the edges of the screen instead of vanishing like in the old beat 'em ups. ❌ After you unlock anything tokens become useless. There is literally nothing else to use them on. Would be nice to see some use for tokens after you've unlocked everything. 📝 Alternate palette swaps for the playable characters would be great. It can be very confusing in co-op or Survival when using a boss character since they'll have the same appearance. 📝 The devs really need to make the Special Action button and the item pickup button separate, or at least add a keybind option for that. 📝 A training mode so we can practice combos on dummies would be really useful, even though this game is not incredibly deep like Streets of Rage 4. 📝 A personal high-score screen for Survival would be really nice.

Overall, this game is incredibly fun, especially with co-op, which elevates the experience exponentially. If you're itching for a new beat 'em up since Streets of Rage 4 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, then this is your cup of tea. The roguelike aspect adds a lot of replay value. Also...
PLEASE, DEVS, IF YOU'RE READING THIS, ADD THE BATTLETOADS AS PLAYABLE CHARACTERS AND A STORY DLC. I'LL PAY HARD CASH FOR A BATTLETOADS AND DOUBLE DRAGON LIKE THIS.
Famous in the arcades and at home consoles for years, the Double Dragon franchise has been a well known name in the beat-em-up genre, despite the fact that none of the titles in the franchise play alike or have the same level of quality among the many titles in the franchise catalog. Secret base, the developers of Devil's Dare, a curious roguelike beat-em-up, are the ones behind the development of this particular entry. So, how does it fare? Is it worth your time and money with all the available options in the genre available on Steam? Most definitely, I say! The story basically takes the Lee brothers, Marian (in another game where she isn't the damsel in distress!) and uncle Matin (the Lee brothers guardian and Marian's uncle.) in a quest to rid the city of the four main gangs that have taken over the city. The usual stuff to give our heroes an excuse to kick butt and there's even a surprise twist at the end. Obviously, the game borrows many things from the developers' previous game and improves on them for the most part. The artwork is very similar (I for one, like the style, but I'll leave it up to you to determine if that is a good or a bad thing), but in full color instead of the sepia colored visuals of Devil's Dare and just as flashy. The soundtrack is a solid selection of remixed tunes from past games and a handful of new ones, the sound effects are just as good. Gameplay wise, the game borrows heavily from the mechanics found in Devil's Dare and adds a few new things as well. This is a tag based beat-em-up with a strong focus on special moves and defeating many enemies at once for food and money rewards, there is also a perk system to improve your characters for the challenges ahead, yet the game remains relatively easy to learn and quite fun. There is a comprehensive set of sliders that enable you to tweak just how difficult you want the story mode to be, a decently sized roster that features many well known faces from the franchise that mix up gameplay quite a bit (and even more characters on the way at the time of this writing, which is quite a feat for a nearly two year old game!) The game features a decently sized campaign. It also borrows the level mechanic from Devil's Dare where after you defeat any level, the next ones will become longer and more difficult. You'll find yourself replaying the game many times if you want to see all the gang levels in their entirety. Despite having so many things going for it, there are some issues to take notice. The game's pace is definitely reminiscent of most mainline games in the Double Dragon franchise, which means it is somewhat on the slow side. The perk system could definitely use some balance tweaks since some specific perks on specific characters can completely make the entire game a total cakewalk regardless of the mode you're playing. After you defeat many enemies at once, you earn a flashy warning and a food reward, which can briefly pause the action and there is also an abundance of visual clutter that some players may find unnecessary. However, latest updates allow you to turn off most of these if you wish, so take a look at the options and simply turn off what you don't want to see. (I don't find it annoying at all to be honest, but having more options to customize your experience is always a good thing!) In summary, the game is definitely one of the better games in the Double Dragon franchise and a great choice among the variety of beat-em up games on Steam. It may not be on the same level of titles like Streets Of Rage 4, River City Girls, Fight'n Rage or TMNT: Shredder's Revenge. But it is certainly a great game in its own right.
