One shell of a ride
If you're a punny person, you'll be kraken up from the dialogue. Don't let the cute exterior and bubbly attitude fool you, this game's a beach, no squidding. It's fundamentals are more of a Sekiro/Lies of P/Nine Sols/TFB:Khazan type, so if you like your near frame-perfect deflects, you'll be hooked. I'm o-fish-ally in love with the game it's crabulous! This is Top 1 funniest souls-like I've played, it has so much character and soul, definitely worth the try for that alone.
🎮 Gameplay & Mechanics
When it comes to making waves in the game, you’re handed one trusty [strike]tri[/strike] bident (it's a fork)—but a whole treasure trove of shells to swap between. All shells have a unique ability which can help differentiate and define your playstyle. There's also several skills that you can use so if you were going for a "mage" style game it'd be possible but the game wants you to play it with: fork, shell, skill.
You learn enemy timings, punish (with spell/fork), you AoE with abilities when ganked, rinse and repeat. This system? Smooth sailing. It’s clean, tight, and doesn’t drown you in options. No 200 weapons/spells/mechanics to memorize. Just parry like a pro (or roll with the tide if it’s a grab), and let them know you ain't forkin' around.
Much more for-gill-ving than other souls-like, the character has the ability to float down slowly (holding jump button). So the trolly platforming in every souls game is toned down, but bumped in a different direction with your grapple hook.
Pacing
The game's pacing was perfect. There are hard bosses, that you'll definitely take a few tries to conquer, but nothing you'll face, as long as you've got the mechanics down, is going to take hours to complete. You're rewarded for exploring the areas of the game with optional bosses, weapon upgrade materials, healing upgrades, stowaways (switchable character enchancing items), and new abilities. So if a boss is giving you trouble, exploring the area more may prove to get you something that might help.
Areas
Each of the areas have their own salty flavor--each a tide pool of creativity and in true souls-like fashion, there's a poison swamp, with some of the most diabolical enemies I've faced in sed swamps.
Bosses
Fin-tastic required bosses! No repeats, no ganks, no cheap 1 shot non-telegraphed moves, just fundamentally and mechanically sound behemoths that really give the game it's souls-like tag. Couple of choppy designs for some optional bosses, but you're only fighting them for the halibut.
There's no summoning system so no one can come to kelp you out, but there's a shell that one shot's everything. So if you really are stuck on some boss, they do have an easy button (... well more like a trigger 🔫 no cap, there's a gun "shell" 😂😂😂 I love this game's humor)
🖼️ Visuals & Art Direction
The game is very bubbly and cute. The characters are very round and small in comparison to the ocean and structures around them. Each area is visually distinct and has unique enemies that fit the area. Many of the structures you find are repurposed human trash thrown into the ocean which gives a sombre realistic quality to them.
During combat the lock-on and camera follow well and their are clear visual indicators when you're going to be grabbed or get hit by something hard enough to break your shell, so the fault is your own when being punished by them. Speaking of combat I can't remember a single time where the camera absolutely screwed me over.
🎧 Sound Design & Music
Every shell crash, weapon clink, and environmental interaction resonates with an immersive clarity, whether you're dishing out the damage or taking it. The 🔔 CLINK you hear after doing a perfect parry with your shell is like blow-fish straight to the brain. One hit and I just can't quit.
The soundtrack fits perfectly for what the game is trying to accomplish. When you're in safe areas the vibes are goin' with the flow and when you get into boss fights it picks back up. I wouldn't say it's the best OST I've ever heard, but it's no sinker.
The voice acting is solid as shell. The only improvement I could see would be voice acting for all lines. Some lines of text are delivered with VA (usually important events) and others are not.
📖 Story & Writing
The story doesn't take itself too seriously, like the tone of the rest of the game. You're a hermit (crab) who had their house (shell) stolen. You go on a wacky, wild adventure to get it back. Along the way the player gets to see the bigger, but not preachy, message of how sea creatures adapt to life with human waste and microplastics (which you use to level up in this game 😂). Many of the characters you meet are rather 1-dimensional, but this game is much more about the gameplay than it is the story or writing.
The way the game takes you from area to area does feel like these could be truly connected places somewhere in the ocean. So gamer's favorite word (IMMERSION) is held well throughout the game.
🧩 UI/UX & Accessibility
Tutorials in the game work well, there aren't a ton of things to learn so you can be taught and be confident with the mechanics in minutes-hours, pending your skill level.
Since the game is simple the UI follows the same principle, as well. So much so that you can turn it off (in options) and play without a UI. The UX is very intuitive, you know your character is low on health with the pulsing red around the screen, you can pop a heal and continue. Also knowing your shells remaining durability isn't as important because you can pick up another you like as they're scattered around everywhere in areas.
In the accessibility options you can find an easy mode to help out if you're having difficulty with an area/boss. It also results in an achievement for using the ... "shell" it provides 😂😂😂
🔧 Performance & Technical Aspects
System specs:

OS: Windows 11 Home

RAM: 32GB

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER
Stable 120 FPS, no huge visual glitches I found, but some grappling points can be annoying. The platforming is very hit-or-miss in this, I got soft-locked in a sea urchin (spike pit) when an enemy hit me into it. This has happened several times in several areas of varying degree.
♻️ Replayability & Value
Is this game worth full price? Yes. If you catch this pearl on sale--REEL IT IN, IMMEDIATELY!!! You won't be sorry.
I beat the game and 100%'ed in a little over 16 hours, but it just came out with New Game Plus (NG+), so there's plenty to return for! https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1887840/view/507324341817443971
🌊 Seas the day!
This is a clam good game you should dolphin-ately pick up if you're new or an existing souls-like fan! It's rather forgiving as far as they go, I'm shore you'll do great. The platforming, bosses, enemies, areas, and combat together form a unique and entertaining experience.
As any souls-like goes: Don't get crabby or harbor any resentment. Orca-strate your strategy and go with the flow of the battle.
(P.S. Comment your best ocean puns, best one gets an award. I can't shucking wait.)
