TLDR: not played for long but this is one of the best creature battle games I've played, at least top 5, maybe top 3. The strategy and battle mechanics even early on are much better than pokemon (especially the passive abilities feel much more impactful). I love the art style, the critters are all so cute. I actually like that there is no elemental system for once, instead each attack is one of three types and each critter has an attack and defense stat for the 3 types (like pokemon's physical/special split, but there are 3). Most games i see put too few types so its just a bad rock paper scissors. I haven't found any bugs or anything, but there are a few balance issues. Because enemies with 0 stamina stay on the field, when you serve the opponent is required to spend their action at the start to swap, and knowing exactly what they are gonna do can make it a little too easy. Giving a free swap between serves for the critter that got knocked out, or have the option to swap position of the active critters instead of swapping with the bench would solve it, but those might cause their own issues, something that would need to be play tested. i know that was a lot of words, but overall its a pretty minor thing, just gives you a free point sometimes. The couple other issues I've seen are too minor to bother mentioning here.

Already 100% (or as much as I could in EA) a while ago, but forgot to do my actual review for the game. Very good, and if it does mean anything, quite a bit better than Pokemon. It feels refreshing to have a good creature-collecter with heart and soul mixed in, and honestly? I'm terrified for when the other regions get added. I will simply perish to everything. Still pheonimal game though!

Tldr: The only reason you should not get this game is if you want to wait for the final artwork to be done in the full release. At least try the demo. It literally costs you nothing and is a good sampling of the game Pvp slaps, beasties are cute, and most importantly imo the game does a good job of onboarding you into the depth of the system. The community is welcoming, always willing to help out someone new, and full of awesome artists/creators/tool makers/team holders/etc. also a very cosy size right now. With no memorizing movesets, damage calculations, or "type" effectiveness. I can't overemphasize just how much having access to all that info in a simple UI during the campaign makes getting into the elegant and chrunchy combat system feel natural. As we keep having to say "It's just good game design". Also, flavor wise, this game crushes Pokemon. Beasties can form rivalries, become besties, or even sweethearts with other players. Beasties run around the overworld with you, ask to join your team when impressed instead of being captured, run over to points of interest in the environment, have pregame thoughts/high fives before important matches, learn from losses as well as victories, rally beastieball outside of games if you pass them one (including wild beasties), they have to sit out a few turns the bench for a bit when they run out of stamina rather than needing to go to the hospital, etc Play this game please, like literally @me on the discord. I would love to help you theory craft a team of you want to get into competitive or listen to your relationship drama from your team. As will many other players (Kesephim and the Dazzling lovers)

Outstanding game to every degree. The story is creative, funny, interesting, but doesn't overstay it's welcome. The gameplay and the battles are the core of the game and it's brilliant designed. Every part of it feels just right. The key issues with the game are entirely to do with it being early access. The game has absolutely brilliantly written friendship/romance/whatever options, however they're not all finished writing and animating. A number of the Beasties don't have their final animations yet, with some of their movements and sprites being hand-drawn line art to placehold for the final art. If that is an issue for you, just wait for the full game. As of right now, the game has a complete story as well as post-game content. It has an active PVP community along with events to compete. The game, if you rush through and focus on the story, comes out to about 15-20 hours long. For the quality of content, depth of strategy, and enjoyment I had, I believe that 20 pounds is an absolute steal. Furthermore, the dev team are dedicated to adding MORE to the story, with new beasties, story beats, bosses and the like. I cannot recommend this game enough.

As someone who grew up with Pokemon being their only taste of the monster-catching genre, I've decided to branch out more, and this game might be the pinnacle of monster-catchers. Not only are the Beasties adorable from the jump, but the seemingly simple volleyball-like combat hides a depth and difficulty that just clicks after a certain point. The story is funny and well-written, the human characters have actual personality, and the music is on another level. Buy this game and make your friends buy it too.

Best Pokemon clone ive played. Likeable characters decent story amazing mon designs and the best combat ive seen in a monster collector and when i say best i MEAN BEST. Yes, better than pokemon by a mile. For only 24$ this is basically a steal. Also adding nuzlocking into the game as a feature is genius.

I've always loved the world and creatures of Pokemon, but never really liked the combat. Here, I like it way more, and it being reframed as sports gives it such a friendly energy that's lovingly crafted (you can also just hit the "Victory" button in matches if you want). The one thing I'd say I dislike is that various art and UI pieces often get in the way of health bars (you can back out of selections and get an overhead view, so it's manageable, but it's a little annoying having to back out to see so often).

The instant I finished the demo, I sat back and thought to myself, "This game is going to become one of my favourites of all time." 200+ hours later, I can confirm that, yes, this game is that good. Despite being in EA, the story itself is fully finished with plenty of postgame content; what's unfinished is some of the character hangouts, a couple areas, and most of the Beastie animations. I understand waiting for full release if that might bother you, but right now the game is fully playable and, in my experience, bug-free.
Short version:
Clear and distinct art direction, thoughtful creature designs, simple but engaging story, fun gameplay loop with an accessible learning curve, well written dialogue, banging music, fantastic community—so many elements make it worth playing. At the very least, try out the demo! It's a great representation of the full game.
Long version:
[olist] [*]The game is unique and sets itself apart from Pokémon. Yes, comparisons are inevitable. Despite some parallels, however, the battle mechanics are refreshing and distinct. The whole “volleyball” thing—offense and defense turns, grid-based lanes, and winning through scoring 2-3 points rather than defeating the entire opponent team—sounds odd, but it’s intuitive and fun. It also some kicks some conventional design choices in the genre away to the curb because it simply didn’t fit with the game’s vision; a good sign, because the devs make intentional decisions rather than blindly following convention. Flavour-wise, there are some weird things in Pokémon that are sort of glossed over, such as earning money, capturing creatures in Poké Balls, and storing them in PCs indefinitely, but their Beastieball equivalents are well explained and give much agency to your Beasties. [*]A tremendous amount of care is put into each and every single Beastie design. The artist team seems to comprise many people passionate about animals, and it shows. There’s also a vast amount of variety in the cast; I guarantee that you will fall in love with something in this game. The dev said it best: “Designs always need to have a weird element, something that drives some people away and attracts others. With 100+ Beasties in the game, we can afford to have 95 that you don’t even like, if it means that there’s 5 that feel specifically made for you.” [*]The devs frequently engage with the community and are always open to suggestions and ideas. Multiple times, I've sent feedback ingame or requested something in the community Discord, and that idea ended up getting implemented within the next couple patches. I've seen them make changes relating to accessibility, story choices, UI and visual clutter, and even balance/gameplay in response to fan critique. That's not to say that they listen to everything, and they often explain why some popularly requested features are unlikely to be implemented from a dev point of view, but that they're so receptive to and communicative with their audience is a great sign of where the game is headed. [*]The game is well balanced; each and every single Beastie has a niche. It’s certainly not perfect, but early access means that there’s a ton of data from players that the devs can use to push out balance changes every month. Plus, they don’t just pay attention to what’s fair—they also look at what’s fun. If something has an ordinary winrate in PvP but is widely seen as unfun to play against, the devs prioritise changing it in some way. Balance changes are also careful to take the single-player experience into account. [/olist] The amount of passion put into this game is tangible and can't be understated. I 100% recommend playing it! If you're at all interested in the PvP scene: please come join the Discord! I can't emphasize enough how helpful and welcoming everyone is. The top players are incredibly warm and encouraging toward beginners, and there are several community resources made specifically to lower the barrier of entry. Come join us, we’d love to have you!

my pet clown spider and giant bandicoot had marital problems in the middle of a volleyball game and it almost made us lose. easily one of the best games i've played in recent memory. jokes aside, this game is delightful. as a longtime pokemon fan it scratches every itch i have for those games and more - the inspiration is very present, but unlike many creature-collectors it doesn't get bogged down in "being a pokemon-like." the "battle" system is intricate and yet intuitive, the story and characters are charming as hell, and the soundtrack absolutely rips. pretty much every fully-metamorphed beastie is competitively viable, too, if you know what you're doing. the game is in early access, but it's only unfinished in regards to beastie assets and post-game content. my one critique is that UI elements occasionally overlap and become difficult to read. this can be mitigated slightly by enabling "detail sport view" in the settings, but that still doesn't solve every instance of this issue. besides that one small nitpick, game is great. play game. do it
