More annoying than fun. There are so many annoying quirks in this game just designed to piss the player off. The animation is also ugly and choppy, I have no idea why the character stutters like it was a spastic and the combat is as fun as trying to throw a feather.

combat and weapon making is so fun, and the other 70% of the game you're forced to endure is slow, hard, and purposely obtuse. if they made a pure arena combat mode and just threw resources at you between each round, this game would be much better.

Even after playing through the tutorial, I have no idea what to do or what I even can do. Your starting weapon is very weak, and you'll likely lose it within the first few minutes of playing, after which you play the rest of the game session with just your fists (spoiler: you'll die quickly). The best tactic for playing that I've found so far, is to get a torch, set entire cities on fire, and then sell the charred wood remains of their furniture back to the city. Also, a torch will allow you to get into areas locked by doors, so you can steal some actual weapons and armor in most towns. The game is very confusing in terms of what you're supposed to do. And I don't mean that in a "the game doesn't hold your hand" kind of way, but more in a "you're in the middle of an ocean and you can't dive and don't see anything on any horizon" kind of way.

TL;DR Sadly, this feels like all of the worst parts of its predecessor. Plus they added the "tripping" mechanic from Super smash brothers brawl. I feel bad giving this a negative review, considering how much i enjoyed the first one. I think a little time in the oven and it can be a great game. Opening up, i was immediately excited. It's "In Celebration of Violence" but felt new. I was ready to dig in and lose myself the same way i did with the previous game, and for a little bit i kinda did. I'll change my review if/when i play more, as i do know this game is all about figuring it out yourself and no hand-holding. _____________________ - The tutorial doesn't tell you how to cast spells, or.. well a lot of other BASIC things, such as not telling you that enemies bodies can be looted for their armor. Maybe i accidentally skipped over these parts. Again i know the game is a "figure it out yourself" type, but these seem pretty pivotal to your survival - The 'hub' is empty from the start. You get a lot of "god speech", but it goes by rather quickly, and doesn't seem to add much, at least from what i saw. Sometimes they say useful things like if your armor breaks. Idk how i really feel about a god telling me these things randomly, but whatever. - Sometimes dashing in combat just makes you drop your weapon entirely? Sometimes you just fall over, and get stunned while walking/running. Sometimes enemies won't fight you and just dash around forever. When the combat works it is a lot of fun! ...but there are a lot of times where small mechanics make it irritating. - The 3 lives mechanic is just plain annoying. Give a rudimentary weapon or something on second/third spawn that you don't have to unlock (knowing the previous game im very sure you can unlock this as a starting thing, eventually) or just make me have one life and be a little harder to kill. Maybe the mechanic is fleshed out later, but starting out it just makes me wanna start over.

A recent change to progression has ruined the game for me. The game was hard but fun, now it's just too annoying to make substantial progress. It's not even like challenging it's just frustrating. Don't bother.

So. I got this game because it looked fun. As it is now, it is not. My main problem is the combat. On paper its a good idea but in practice its shit. nearly every single attack stuns you, you trip while dodging (wich is pretty dumb cuz you need to dodge toa avoid attacks and then you still fall down, drop your weapon and get your shit kicked in), your weapon gets stuck on basically every enemy and nothing tells you on how to actually get it back out of your enemy. I understand wanting to make a game difficult to make beating it all the more rewarding but there is always such a thing as making a game so annoyingly difficult that you cant even get far enough to actually have any fun. It has a lot of potential but it is, atleast as it is now, not very good

No main-menu button, no introductory information on combat/movement/exploration. You have to restart the whole game to get a fresh start after your first death. Didn't feel the need to put in more time than that. Looks promising, but wait until beta.

Weapon sometimes got stuck in the grass. And when i slash or stab, the hand feeling is a bit weird, too slow and to sticky. Wanna a more dexterous and clean combat experience. Anyway pretty promising. Keep going!

The previous game, In Celebration of Violence, is very good. This game, while needing some heavy, heavy work, will probably end up also being very good. The various systems could definitely use some refining, and if you are looking for a game to play RIGHT NOW, I would say probably go with ICoV instead. Once this gets fixed up some it will be plenty good, and the dev is actively making changes based on the discussions in the forums, so prospects are good!

Pretty much In Celebration of Violence 2 (it helps a LOT if you have played ICoV before this one) without the meta progression (so far). Initial difficulty is pretty brutal until you figure out how to progress. You'd need to either enjoy figuring stuff out for yourself and failing a lot in the beginning, or hook up on Discord and ask away to get some primers. Otherwise, wait for a more tutorialised version later on.
